The therapeutic termination of pregnancy(TToP)is an induced abortion following a diagnosis of medical *** is applied to avoid the risk of substantial harm to the mother or in cases of fetal *** type of induced abortion is provided after the second semester of gestation if fetal illness or the pregnancy cause physical danger or pathological mental distress to the *** and economic determinants could influence the desire for children and family planning in couples,as well as the use of effective contraception and the choice to perform an induced ***,pre-existing mental health problems could affect the decision between carrying on a problematic pregnancy or having ***,the TToP is a reproductive event with an important traumatic burden,but also with an intrinsic therapeutic effect and it can produce different psychological and psychopathological effects on women and *** aim of this review is to evaluate what demographic,reproductive and psychopathological determinants are involved in the choice of undergoing a TToP in ***,we will examine both positive and negative consequences of this procedure on women’s mental health,underlying which factors are related to a worse outcome in order to provide the best clinical support to vulnerable groups.

Background: Childhood trauma (CT) exposure is associated with a more pernicious course in bipolar disorder (BD). However, few studies have reported differences between BD I and BD II regarding CT exposure. We explore the differences in the CT trajectories in bipolar disorders. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of individuals with BD (BD I = 73 vs BD II = 73) was carried out. Early age at onset (EAO) and suicide ideation/behavior were used as severity outcomes. Timespan between EAO and treatment was documented and the associations between CT and comorbid alcohol used disorder (AUD), anxiety disorders (AD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were also described. Univariate, bivariate analyses, and a Poisson regression model with bootstrap resampling were used. Results: Higher scores of CT, physical abuse (PA), and sexual abuse (SA) were statistically significant for BD II than BD I (p < 0.001, p = 0.048, p < 0.001, respectively). Early age at onset, suicide ideation/behavior and treatment delay were associated with CT in both BD I and BD II. However, AUD and PTSD showed association with CT only for BD I. Limitations: Sample size, non-comparison control group, and recall bias. Conclusions: There are differences in CT subtype exposure between BD I and BD II with regards to early age onset, suicide ideation/behavior, delayed time to treatment, and comorbid mental disorders. These results claim for early access to strategies such as CT exposure screening in individuals with BD to detect possible pernicious course and improve the quality of life and clinical outcomes. © 2024

Objective: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is common in long COVID syndrome;however, the neurobiological mechanisms are unclear. An immune activation response has been associated with COVID-19 severity as well as in MDD. We hypothesize that high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines during SARS-CoV-2 infection may be associated with new-onset MDD and severe outcomes such as treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and risk of suicide ideation and behavior (SI/SB). Methods: A case-control nested to a cohort study was carried out on a total of 678 COVID-19 survivors (MDD = 184 vs. non-MDD = 494). A pro-inflammatory panel of serum levels of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-13, IL-17α, TNF-α) was evaluated during COVID-19 hospitalization and severe outcomes such as TRD and SI/SB were assessed in individuals with new onset of MDD after hospital discharge compared to non-MDD COVID-19 survivors. Results: High levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines during SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified in MDD participants compared to non-MDD subgroups during long COVID. These differences were sustained also for TRD and SI/SB severity outcomes. There is a mild association of high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and MDD, TRD, and SI/SB. Conclusion: High levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines during severe or critical COVID-19 exposure may explain long COVID associated MDD and thus severe outcomes such as TRD and SI/SB. Relevance to clinical practice: Identifying elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines during COVID-19 as a risk factor for MDD and severe outcomes underscores the need for early screening and targeted treatments in long COVID. Monitoring cytokine levels may help clinicians predict and manage TRD and SI/SB in this population, improving long-term psychiatric outcomes. © 2025 The Author(s). Childhood trauma (CT) is associated with an earlier onset and a more severe course of bipolar disorder (BD). However, the specific impact of CT on bipolar depression remains unclear. Herein, this study aimed to investigate the effect of CT using depressive episode frequency as a threshold for disease burden and severity. A cohort of 146 participants with BD was followed for 3 years. The effects of CT on mood episodes, hospital readmissions, suicidal ideation, and behavior were analyzed. A high number of depressive episodes were identified in participants with BD and CT exposure, with the effect being more pronounced in BD II than in BD I. A threshold of ≥4 depressive episodes serves as a sensitivity cutoff point to detect associations with severe outcomes, such as early readmission and suicidal ideation and behavior. The presence of CT increases the risk of experiencing at least one severe outcome by 80%. In our cohort, a cutoff point of ≥4 depressive episodes mediated the effect of CT on at least one severe outcome (early readmission or suicidal ideation and behavior). The study is limited by its non-probabilistic sample, recall bias, and moderate receiver operating characteristic curve value. The findings reinforce the association between CT and BD severity, highlighting the significantly higher number of depressive episodes in individuals with CT. This underscores CT as a risk factor for depressive predominant polarity and more frequent mood episodes in BD. © The Author(s) 2025.

All for one, one for all: Compassionate goal orientation, social support, and work engagement

Though social support plays a critical role in worker well-being and engagement, its mechanisms of action for motivating work engagement remain unclear. Further, literature to date has primarily examined internally-focused personal resources (e.g., confidence, optimism) as a consequence and predictor of job resources such as perceived social support, yet relationally-focused personal resources (e.g., orientation toward others) may have greater relevance in this social context. Extrapolating from associations posited within an expanded job demands-resources model and the egosystem-ecosystem theory of social motivation, this study used a random-intercepts cross-lagged panel model to examine whether a compassionate goal orientation, a novel personal resource, may be a mechanism through which social support at work facilitates work engagement. Using three waves of survey data from 850 working U.S. adults, we demonstrated a reciprocal relationship between a compassionate goal orientation and perceived co-worker support, providing initial evidence for the importance of interpersonal goal orientation in fostering workplace support among colleagues. Yet, we did not find support for a reciprocal relationship between co-worker or supervisor support and work engagement. Our study provides preliminary evidence supporting the importance of a compassionate goal orientation. Insights gained through this work represent a valuable contribution toward a better understanding of factors that promote effective collaboration in the workplace in service of shared organizational goals. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023. corrected publication 2023.

Neutral lipid storage disease with myopathy(NLSDM)is a rare autosomal recessive disorder,due to an enzymatic error of lipid *** present always with skeletal muscle myopathy and variable cardiac and hepatic *** is caused by mutations in the PNPLA2 gene,which encodes the adipose triglyceride lipase(ATGL).Here we report the molecular characterization and clinical findings of two NLSDM siblings carrying the novel c.187t1G>C homozygous PNPLA2 mutation,localized in the splice site of intron *** analyses revealed that neither aberrant PNPLA2 mRNA isoforms,nor ATGL mutated protein were detectable in patient’s ***,both patients presented early onset muscle weakness,in particular of proximal upper limb *** almost 15 years,muscle damage affected also distal upper *** is a NLSDM family,displaying a severe PNPLA2 mutation in two siblings with clinical presentation characterized by an early onset,but a slowly evolution of severe myopathy.

Scaling of a large-scale simulation of synchronous slow-wave and asynchronous awake-like activity of a cortical model with long-range interconnections

Cortical synapse organization supports a range of dynamic states on multiple spatial and temporal scales, from synchronous slow wave activity (SWA), characteristic of deep sleep or anesthesia, to fluctuating, asynchronous activity during wakefulness (AW). Such dynamic diversity poses a challenge for producing efficient large-scale simulations that embody realistic metaphors of short- and long-range synaptic connectivity. In fact, during SWA and AW different spatial extents of the cortical tissue are active in a given timespan and at different firing rates, which implies a wide variety of loads of local computation and communication. A balanced evaluation of simulation performance and robustness should therefore include tests of a variety of cortical dynamic states. Here, we demonstrate performance scaling of our proprietary Distributed and Plastic Spiking Neural Networks (DPSNN) simulation engine in both SWA and AW for bidimensional grids of neural populations, which reflects the modular organization of the cortex. We explored networks up to 192×192 modules, each composed of 1250 integrate-and-fire neurons with spike-frequency adaptation, and exponentially decaying intermodular synaptic connectivity with varying spatial decay constant. For the largest networks the total number of synapses was over 70 billion. The execution platform included up to 64 dual-socket nodes, each socket mounting 8 Intel Xeon Haswell processor cores @ 2.40GHz clock rate. Network initialization time, memory usage, and execution time showed good scaling performances from 1 to 1024 processes, implemented using the standard Message Passing Interface (MPI) protocol. We achieved simulation speeds of between 2.3×109and 4.1×109synaptic events per second for both cortical states in the explored range of inter-modular interconnections. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
