The design and development of a new kind of cost-effective electrode material with excellent selectivity and stability are still a great challenge in the field of electrochemical sensors. Recently, researchers have paid more attention to the electrochemical reduction of nitro compounds due to their hazardous nature. Nitro compounds play a vital role in various industrial applications. However, the direct discharge of nitro compounds to the environment as industrial wastewater is harmful. In this study, a nanocomposite made of 1D graphene nanoribbons decorated with manganese dioxide (GNR-MnO2) was prepared to fabricate an electrochemical transducer for the determination of nitrofurantoin (NFT) in biofluids. First, 1D GNR was prepared by unzipping of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Second, the GNR was decorated with MnO2 by the hydrothermal reduction method. As-prepared GNR-MnO2 nanocomposite was comprehensively characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy with EDX, XRD, UV-visible, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Moreover, GNR-MnO2-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited good electrocatalytic activity toward NFT. The electroreduction of NFT was found at -0.40 V which was 50 mV lower than bare GCE. GNR-MnO2 nanocomposite modified GCE showed a well-defined linear reduction peak current for NFT from 10 nM to 1,000 μM. The selectivity of the sensor was also analyzed in the presence of other nitro compounds which confirmed that NFT can be selectively detected at -0.4 V. The GNR-MnO2 modified electrode was also able to separate reduction peaks of other nitro compounds. In addition, the detection of NFT was carried out in human urine samples with a good recovery of 99.60%-98.60%. © 2023 Ramila D. Nagarajan et al.

Chemical additives to perovskite precursors constitute a predominant route to passivate defects in perovskite films and improve carrier charge dynamics. In this work, ionic liquids (ILs) with chloride and iodide anions are used as additives for bulk passivation of perovskite films. The ionic liquids in the form of 1‑butyl‑4-methylpyradinium iodide (IL-I) and 1-ethylimidazolium chloride (IL-Cl) are mixed individually with a precursor of Cesium Formamidinium Lead Triiodide and Methylammonium Chloride (CsFAPbI3−MACl). The decay of charge carriers within the perovskite film before and after passivation with ILs was measured by Time Resolved Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (TRPL). The effect of added ILs on the recombination rate of the photocarriers was investigated by analyzing the decay of the TRPL signal in all samples. The average lifetimes obtained within one day of preparations were 79 ns, 73 ns and 275 ns for pristine perovskite, IL-I passivated perovskite and IL-Cl passivated perovskite films, respectively. These values show that the presence of the IL with chloride anion greatly improves the average lifetime of the charge carrier by around 250%, while IL with iodide anion decreased the lifetime by 32% as compared with the pristine perovskite sample. This finding renders the IL-Cl passivated perovskite films as a valuable resource in applications ranging from photoelectric to hydrogen generation devices. © 2023

We present the transit timing variation (TTV) and planetary atmosphere analysis of the Neptune-mass planet HAT-P-26 b. We present a new set of 13 transit light curves from optical ground-based observations and combine them with light curves from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and previously published ground-based data. We refine the planetary parameters of HAT-P-26 b and undertake a TTV analysis using 33 transits obtained over seven years. The TTV analysis shows an amplitude signal of 1.98 ± 0.05 minutes, which could result from the presence of an additional ∼ 0.02 MJup planet at the 1:2 mean-motion resonance orbit. Using a combination of transit depths spanning optical to near-infrared wavelengths, we find that the atmosphere of HAT-P-26 b contains (formula presented) of H2O with a derived temperature of (formula presented) K. Nickel-based compounds are widely applied as the active material for energy storage devices, owing to high theoretical capacity and easy-fabricated process. Bimetallic compounds having multiple redox states can provide abundant redox reactions for charge storage. Structure directing agent (SDA) can promote the preferable growth of active materials and to enhance energy storage abilities. In this work, NH4BF4 and NH4HF2 are firstly used as SDA to synthesize nickel-based compounds along with 2-methylmidozole in the one-step solution process for energy storage applications. The bimetallic compounds are synthesized by incorporating Al, Mn, Co, Cu and Zn salts in the precursor solution including the Ni salt. The system with Al, Cu or Zn possesses single metal compound and barely nickel compound. Mn and Co-incorporated systems present clear bimetallic components with nickel hydroxide. The highest specific capacitance (CF) of 1336.3 F/g (297.0 mAh/g) are achieved at 20 mV/s for the NiCo-based electrode, owing to the bimetallic feature and favorable two-dimensional sheet-like structures. An energy storage device is assembled using the NiCo-based compound and reduced graphene oxide electrodes. The maximum energy density of 10.5 Wh/kg at 0.3 kW/kg, and the CF retention of 78.5% and Coulombic efficiency of 85.2% are achieved after 10,000 times charge/discharge cycles. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) with high surface area and tunable pore size are considered as a promising active material for energy storage, but the low electrical conductivity restricts its performance. Developing ZIF67 derivatives with improved electrical conductivity is necessary to broaden its application in electrochemical fields. In this work, two strategies are applied to improve electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance of ZIF67. Novel structure directing agents of NH4BF4 and NH4HF2 are used to synthesize ZIF67 derivatives with higher theoretical capacitances and favorable layered structures. Self-assembled MXene with different amounts is further incorporated in ZIF67 derivatives to establish composites. The optimal composite electrode shows a high specific capacitance (CF) of 1410.4 F/g (775.6C/g) at 20 mV/s, while the ZIF67 derivative electrode without MXene only shows a CF value of 942.3 F/g (518.3C/g), due to the high surface area and better pore structure as well as the close combination of MXene and the layered ZIF67 derivative for the former case. An energy storage device with the optimal composite and carbon electrodes shows the maximum energy density of 32.40 Wh/kg at 375 W/kg. The Coulombic efficiency of 100% and the CF retention of 77.4% are also achieved after 10,000 cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) with a high theoretical capacitance, wide potential ranges and easy availability has attracted much attentions as the electrode material of battery supercapacitor hybrids (BSH). Metal–organic framework (MOF) is one of the promising potential energy storage materials due to its large surface area and controllable pore structures. In this work, novel iron oxide/iron organic framework composites (Fe2O3/FeMOF) are in-situ grown on the Ni foam as efficient energy storage electrodes of BSH. By tuning the solvothermal durations, the morphology changes from random sizes of sheets, regular grown vertical sheets, to flower-like structures. The d-spacing also increases for the Fe2O3/FeMOF synthesized using longer solvothermal durations. The optimal Fe2O3/FeMOF electrode synthesized using 9 h shows a high areal capacitance of 10.97 F/cm2 along with an areal capacity of 5.49 F/cm2 at the current density of 35 mA/cm2, owing to the most regular growth of sheets, the large d-spacing, and the smallest charge-transfer resistances. A BSH composed of the Fe2O3/FeMOF positive electrode and a graphene negative electrode shows a maximum energy density of 0.76 mWh/cm2 at 22.5 mW/cm2. The excellent long-term cycling stability with the capacitance retention of 85% and Coulombic efficiency of 98% are also achieved after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The development of novel techniques to record wide-field brain activity enables estimation of data-driven models from thousands of recording channels and hence across large regions of cortex. These in turn improve our understanding of the modulation of brain states and the richness of traveling waves dynamics. Here, we infer data-driven models from high-resolution in-vivo recordings of mouse brain obtained from wide-field calcium imaging. We then assimilate experimental and simulated data through the characterization of the spatio-temporal features of cortical waves in experimental recordings. Inference is built in two steps: an inner loop that optimizes a mean-field model by likelihood maximization, and an outer loop that optimizes a periodic neuro-modulation via direct comparison of observables that characterize cortical slow waves. The model reproduces most of the features of the non-stationary and non-linear dynamics present in the high-resolution in-vivo recordings of the mouse brain. Robustness and Stability of Spin Glass Ground States to Perturbed Interactions

Across many scientific and engineering disciplines, it is important to consider how much the output of a given system changes due to perturbations of the input. Here, we investigate the glassy phase of ±J spin glasses at zero temperature by calculating the robustness of the ground states to flips in the sign of single interactions. For random graphs and the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, we find relatively large sets of bond configurations that generate the same ground state. These sets can themselves be analyzed as subgraphs of the interaction domain, and we compute many of their topological properties. In particular, we find that the robustness, equivalent to the average degree, of these subgraphs is much higher than one would expect from a random model. Most notably, it scales in the same logarithmic way with the size of the subgraph as has been found in genotype-phenotype maps for RNA secondary structure folding, protein quaternary structure, gene regulatory networks, as well as for models for genetic programming. The similarity between these disparate systems suggests that this scaling may have a more universal origin. © 2020, CC BY.

Search engine privacy has not been an option for web exploration in the past. Search history returns to users as personalized merchandise promotion from search engine companies. Here we demonstrate a privacy-guaranteed internet search method, provided with the entire article as a query, can be correctly carried out without revealing users' sensitive content by a degenerate, irreversible, encoding scheme and an efficient FM-index search routine, generally used in the next-generation sequencing. In our solution, Sapiens Aperio Veritas Engine (S.A.V.E.), every word in the query is encoded into one of 12 "amino acids" comprising a pseudo-biological sequence (PBS) at users' local machines. The PBS-mediated plagiarism detection is done by users' submission of locally encoded PBS through our cloud service to locate duplicates in the collected web contents, currently including all the English and Chinese Wikipedia pages and Open Access journal articles, as of April 2021, which had been encoded in the same way as the query. It is found that PBSs with a length longer than 12, comprising a combination of more than 12 "amino acids", can return correct results with a false positive rate © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.
