Universal nanocomposite coating with antifouling and redox capabilities for electrochemical affinity biosensing in complex biological fluids

Electrochemical affinity biosensors have the potential to facilitate the development of multiplexed point-of-care diagnostics in complex biological fluids. However, their commercial viability has been hindered by challenges such as electrode biofouling and the lack of inherent redox properties. To address this unmet need, we have developed a universal nanocomposite coating which is unique in its ability to not only allow oriented conjugation of the biorecognition element but also specific detection directly in complex biological fluids like serum and urine owing to its built-in antifouling and redox capabilities, thus improving suitability for point of care testing. This multifunctional coating comprises a 3D porous crosslinked bovine serum albumin matrix for oriented conjugation and antifouling properties with embedded graphene nanosheets modified with amino-ferrocene for enhanced conductivity and mediator-free biosensing. The coating showed minimal signal degradation despite prolonged exposure to 1% bovine serum albumin, artificial urine and untreated human serum for up to 30 days. To demonstrate its utility, we fabricated and tested proof-of-concept electrochemical immunosensors for bladder cancer protein biomarkers, specifically interleukin-8 (IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The practical feasibility was highlighted by the excellent sensitivity and specificity observed for IL-8 and VEGF with a limit of detection of 41 pg mL−1 and 67 pg mL−1, respectively. Consequently, this universal nanocomposite-based electrochemical biosensing platform can be extended to the point of care testing of a broad spectrum of biomarkers present in complex biological fluids, thus enabling reliable and early diagnostics. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry

Effects of Exercise Training on Immune-Related Genes and Pathways in the Cortex of Animal Models of Alzheimer’s Disease: A Systematic Review

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that affects the immune system due to the accumulation of amyloid-b (Ab) and tau associated molecular pathology and other pathogenic processes. To address AD pathogenesis, various approaches had been conducted from drug development to lifestyle modification to reduce the prevalence of AD. Exercise is considered a prominent lifestyle modification to combat AD. Objective: This observation prompted us to review the literature on exercise related to immune genes in the cortex of animal models of AD. We focused on animal model studies due to their prevalence in this domain. Methods: The systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA standards using Web of Science (WoS) and PubMed databases. Any kind of genes, proteins, and molecular molecules were included in this systematic review. The list of these immune-related molecules was analyzed in the STRING database for functional enrichment analysis. Results: We found that 17 research studies discussed immune-related molecules and 30 immune proteins. These studies showed that exercise had the ability to ameliorate dysfunction in AD-related pathways, which led to decreasing the expression of microglia-related pathways and Th17-related immune pathways. As a result of decreasing the expression of immune-related pathways, the expression of apoptosis-related pathways was also decreasing, and neuronal survival was increased by exercise activity. Conclusions: Based on functional enrichment analysis, exercise not only could reduce apoptotic factors and immune components but also could increase cell survival and Ab clearance in cortex samples. How and when job passion promotes customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior: A moderated mediation model

Customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (OCBC) is a crucial topic in the restaurant industry, yet few studies have explored how and when an employee's passion toward their job affects OCBC. This study examined the relationship between the job passion of restaurant employees, employee resilience, and OCBC. The mediation effect of employee resilience and the moderating effect of employee mindfulness were also investigated. A questionnaire survey was administered to 471 frontline restaurant employees in Taiwan. The results demonstrated that harmonious passion and obsessive passion positively influence employee resilience, which positively influences OCBC. Employee resilience mediates the influences of harmonious and obsessive passion on OCBC. Furthermore, employee mindfulness strengthens the positive relationship between job passion and employee resilience, thereby facilitating OCBC. These findings supplement previous studies by elaborating the association between job passion and OCBC. Restaurant managers can apply these findings to human resource practices and service management. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

In its pursuit of global university rankings, Indonesia introduced a series of higher education policies, one in 2014 to grant autonomy to a select group of universities, and another in 2017 to tie financial and promotional incentives to scientific publications for all researchers. To examine scientific productivity surrounding these policies, we use bibliometric data from Scopus spanning three decades from 1990 to 2020. We investigate the patterns of publication and collaboration and analyze them across journal quartiles, academic fields, and researcher cohorts. Our findings reveal that publications increased dramatically for both autonomous and non-autonomous higher education institutions after 2014. Single-university authorship was common practice and skewed publication quality towards Q3 and Q4 journals, while co-authorships with foreign organizations pulled the shift towards Q1 journals consistently across all fields. New researchers starting in 2014 published fewer Q1 and more Q3 and Q4 publications than the earlier cohort. We highlight policy implications on the need for a balance between publication quantity and quality and call on Indonesian policymakers to introduce holistic higher education reforms rather than introducing reforms that focus on the performance of the university for ranking purposes. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2023.

Deep learning is revolutionizing the field of medical image segmentation. The U-shaped (Unet) model, with its encoder-decoder architecture and skip connections, has become the dominant architecture for this task. However, variations like Nested-Unet are necessary to address the challenge of adapting network size for datasets of varying scales. This study proposes a novel model based on a multilayer Unet architecture that leverages all output features within nodes of a Nested Unet network. We evaluate the proposed model on four key medical image datasets: electron microscopy (EM), nuclei, polyps (CVC-ClinicDB), and skin lesions. The model achieves impressive Dice scores: 94.08% for EM, 92.68% for nuclei, 87.20% for skin lesions, and 93.02% for the CVC-ClinicDB dataset. These outstanding results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed model compared to recent advancements in the field. Remarkably, the model achieves this performance while maintaining a size that is half that of a traditional Unet model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of maturity in quality management systems on assets, income and current ratio in companies of the hotel sector in the city of Barranquilla and its metropolitan area, based on the analysis of the level of maturity of the system and the application of multivariate statistical models. To achieve this, the Business management strategies of this sector were characterized, based on a structured model of variables and based on field data referring to a representative sample of companies in the sector (n = 64). With this information, the determining factors in the level of maturity of the quality management systems were identified, which allowed to know if the processes developed in a management system, such as these, in the Hotel Sector, impact positively or negatively on the performance of the sector’s companies based on assets, income and the current ratio by means of a multiple regression model, since, although these processes are being implemented, there are no current studies that evidence the contributions to the performance of the sector’s companies. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Two new non-withanolidal steroids with a cross-conjugated dienone structural unit in ring A, capnesterones A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the soft coral Capnella imbricata in the southeast waters of Taiwan. The compounds' structures were elucidated through a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including IR, ESIMS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR, and through comparison with previous literature. At a concentration of 10 μM, steroids 1 and 2 exhibited reductions in iNOS levels (60 % and 82 %) compared to LPS-stimulated control cells, along with increased release (134 % and 110 %) against COX-2 protein expressions. © 2024 Phytochemical Society of Europe

Perspectives of Indonesian Muslim patients with advanced lung cancer on good death: A qualitative study

Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death. Patients with advanced lung cancer may experience burdensome distress at the end of life. The concept of good death has been shown to be complex, and continues to be expanded by gaining a better understanding of the cultural views of different populations. This study aimed to explore the perspective of Indonesian Muslims patients with advanced cancer on the concept of good death. Method: A qualitative design comprising in-depth interviews was employed. Seven male and 3 female Muslim patients between ages 36 and 68 and diagnosed with advanced lung cancer were recruited from a teaching hospital in Central Java, Indonesia. Results: Content analysis of the interviews revealed five themes: dying without physical discomfort, dying in religious ways and in a desirable place, dying without emotional discomfort, receiving help and support, and having a good relationship with medical staff. Conclusions: Indonesian Muslim patient with advanced lung cancer have unique perspectives on good death, especially based on the themes of religious ways of dying and support from family. Health care providers should be aware that good death is not an individual concern and should thus adopt highly sensitive observation skills to assess the physical and emotional state of patients. These providers must also understand their patients’ preferences and respect their needs, regardless of their own beliefs. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

The chemical screening of an octocoral identifed as Junceella fragilis has led to the isolation of five chlorinated briarane-type diterpenoids, including three known metabolites, gemmacolide X (1), frajunolide I (2), and fragilide F (3), along with two new analogs, 12α-acetoxyfragilide F (4) and 12α-acetoxyjunceellin (5). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was carried out to determine the absolute configurations of 1 and 2, while the structures of new compounds 4 and 5 were ascertained with 2D NMR experiments. Briaranes 1 and 3-5 were active in enhancing alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

technology Transfer (TT) refers to the movement of technical knowledge between organizations, including tools, expertise, and capacities that are useful in new productive contexts. Based on this premise, this study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) and a bibliometric analysis to explore the relationship between technology transfer and food security in emerging territories during 2014–2024. The Scopus and Web of Science databases were used, selecting only scientific and review articles in English. The methodology included the use of R's "Analyze Results" and "bibliometrix" tools for bibliometric analysis, following the PRISMA 2020 declaration for the SLR. 393 articles were identified across both databases, with 52 duplicates. Of the remaining 337 texts, 72 fullfilled the PICO criteria, and 55 were finally selected, focusing on the impact of technology transfer on food security. The bibliometric results indicate that 76.9 % of the documents analyzed are scientific articles and 20.4 % are reviews. The countries with the highest production in this topic were the United States, China, India, Germany and Brazil, while the most represented areas were Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Development of Sciences and Social Sciences. Although these issues are fundamental, the analysis highlights limited development in emerging territories, evidencing technological and socioeconomic barriers. This work highlights the importance of strengthening technology transfer strategies to address food insecurity, promoting agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change. The findings offer a robust foundation for future research and the formulation of effective public policies.
