Using modified IPA to define quality improvement strategies: A study of air-conditioning industry in Taiwan

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose a modified Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) model and calculates the performance of quality characteristic for the purpose of defining quality improvement strategy. Design/methodology/approach - This study developed modified IPA by introducing the Mahalanobis Distance and multiple regression analysis to evaluate the performance gap and implicit importance of quality characteristics. This paper used a large air-conditioning manufacturer in Taiwan as the case analysis and study targets. It discussed and validated the modified IPA analytical results by studying case history and market analysis. Findings - Through the case study, the quality characteristics of air-conditioning product and service needed to be improved immediately are Green product (Q3) and Repair service (Q10), and the Price (Q11) and Serviceability (Q2) could be kept or enhanced to win the market competitive advantages. Originality/value - This study developed a modified IPA to help organization identifying key quality characteristics of product and service, and choosing its improvement strategies to win the market competitive advantages effectively. © 2016 Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Intracranial hemorrhage refers to bleeding that occurs within the skull. Several factors have been attributed to the mortality of posterior fossa hemorrhage, including clinical presentations such as Glascow coma scale, obstructive hydrocephalus, imaging features such as hematoma size, intraventricular hemorrhage, brain stem compression, and combined factor such as ICH score. First, this study attempts to identify the most influential factor combinations to explore mortality of posterior fossa hemorrhage. We will adopt appropriate algorithms to cluster the data so that the patient data with similar features are appropriately clustered. And we will build a corresponding prediction model for each cluster data to construct a multiple prediction classifier.

His recent publications are on philosophy of a photograph hermeneutic reality of product and on philosophy of intimate spaces. R. Dhanuskodi has nearly 40 years of R&D experience at BHEL India in technical areas applicable for thermal power plants. He is a life member of The Institution of Engineers (India) and The Combustion Institute. He has won two BHEL’s Excel awards under the best author category for technical papers. He has visited France Netherlands and Germany under Indo-Europe Clean Coal Development Program. He has guided 42 UG PG and PhD project works. He holds 11 patents 40 copyrights and 2 design registrations. He has presented papers in 20 conferences and published in 10 national and international journals. R. Kaliappan completed his bachelors in electrical and electronics engineering and Masters in Computer Science. He has 36 years of research experience in different fields of power generation and power plant subsystems such as heat transfer studies on boiler circulation efficiency improvements of boiler subsystems product improvements/ enhancements and setting up test facilities for research studies. He has published a number of technical papers on MHD power generation and heat transfer studies in various national and international journals. The Empty fruit bunches are one of the palm oil industry wastes, which can be used for mushroom cultivation. Post-cultivation of mushroom from former EFB-mushroom media (EFBMM) has the potential to be processed into biogas. The purpose of this research was to examine optimum co-digestion conditions for biogas production of *** research was carried out in an anaerobic digester with three different conditions - dry fermentation (Water content (WC)/Total Solid (TS) ratio 1.5 - 3.5), semi-wet fermentation (WC/TS ratio = 4.0 - 5.7) and wet fermentation (WC/TS ratio> 9.0) conditions. Digester of capacity 50L was used. Fermentation was done using 20% cow feces as inoculum which then added with circulation system for 70 days. The results showed that optimum biogas production were produced in semi-wet fermentation conditions (WC/TS ratio = 4). It was produced 37.462 liters (2.420 liters CH4/Kg Volatile Solid (VS)) of biogas with methane contain about 26.231%. Total volume of inoculum during process was 19.6 liters (1: 4 w/v) with absorbed TS inoculum ratio, TS/I = 0.4 (1:2.5 w/v). The result of research also showed that biogas which was produced from control about 2.865 liters (0.041 liters CH4/KgVS), with TS absorbed inoculum ratio, TS/I = 0.5 (1: 5w/v).

Shanta Whitaker is a health policy consultant at Logistics Management Institute (LMI) a management consulting firm based in Tysons VA. Before switching to health policy Dr. Whitaker was the Associate Director of the Health Professions Advising Program at Yale University. Stephanie Yingling is a government consultant at Logistics Management Institute (LMI) a management consulting firm based in Tysons VA. To meet projected labor demands in science and engineering, the workforce of the future must be educated today in increasing numbers. Indeed, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) underpin the government's ability to defend the nation and to assure the vitality of the economy. STEM jobs are the fastest growing occupational category and, by 2020, 65% of all jobs in the U.S. will require a post-secondary degree with STEM literacy skills (Carnevale, Smith, & Strohl, 2013). However, according to the U.S. Department of Education, less than 25 percent of college students pursuing bachelor's degrees will be specializing in STEM fields (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). In addition, the current STEM workforce is predominantly male and White or Asian, even as women and racial and ethnic minority groups are projected to comprise greater percentages of the U.S. population in the coming decades. To meet the growing global demand for a STEM workforce, every segment of the U.S. population will need to be engaged in a successful STEM education. A first critical step will be for academia, government, and nongovernmental agencies to understand the challenges diverse students face in their quest to join the STEM workforce. The goal of the project described in this article is to close the achievement gap of underrepresented minority and underserved students (URMS) and to contribute to addressing the STEM crisis facing the nation. In addition to the longitudinal, five phase research project outlined in this article, UVA Engineering's Office of Diversity and Education (ODE) will work to assemble a comprehensive clearinghouse of survey and records data on factors related to STEM education from sources such as admissions, student affairs, student health, academic records and campus-wide surveys in institutional research offices, and UVA's own research and work.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
