ABSTRACTABSTRACTHow does elimination work in Brazil? After a brief history of miscegenation as assimilation/elimination, this article addresses this question through the experiences of one urban indigenous group (Aldeia Maracanã) and one urban Afro-descendantquilombo(Sacopã) in Rio de Janeiro. Based on fieldwork conducted between 2014 and 2017, the article traces the continuities of settler colonialism in independent Brazil, including the multicultural turn of the 1988 Constitution. I centre the lived experiences and struggles of the two groups, whose intersecting politics are caught within the inescapability of being ‘within Empire’ while having to imagine a politics outside of it (Simpson 2014). I then contribute to Settler Colonial Theory from this perspective, challenging its land-labour binary, for Black and Indigenous peoples have both been affected by processes of elimination, dispossession, labour exploitation, and exclusion (racism). Moreover, miscegenation/assimilation has not been merely ‘a kind of death’, as Patrick Wolfe has portrayed it (Wolfe, 2006). Miscegenation has also functioned as the space from which indigenous and black peoples have resurged, survived, and thrived. When we engage critically with the political options available to these groups within settler colonialism, we are forced to ask: What does it mean to talk about de-colonisation in Brazil?

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma derived from germinal center B-cells. Small-volume biopsies (SVBs), including fine-needle aspiration, needle core biopsy, and cell blocks, are often used for the assessment of patients with FL. Recently, Fitzpatrick et al. found that additional biopsies were frequently needed to supplement SVB for the initial diagnosis of FL. However, regardless of the type of SVB used, additional biopsies were usually not necessary for assessments for transformed or recurrent FL. Their multi-institutional study reflects the fact that SVB may be sufficient for clinical decision-making in these medical settings, although surgical excision is the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis of FL. With ancillary tests and advances in molecular testing, SVB has become increasingly popular and helpful, although there are practical limitations.

Participating local community in cultural heritage management has always been a concern since the Venice Charter so far (1964). In addition, the Faro Convention (2005) shifted focus from cultural heritage values to the values of cultural heritage for society. In this case, there is required to design a simple method and tool in order to facilitate the interaction between local people and authority. This paper introduces a method and tool (iCommunity) that are now using in community-centered approach in the Bisotun World Heritage Site. The main goal of this application is to find a simple and applicable method and tool for inclusion the local community in decision-making processes in cultural heritage management. The proposed model is designed based on the general public participation principles, on the one hand, and the users’ need and requirement in the world heritage site, on the other hand. © 2022, CC BY.

Community participation in cultural heritage conservation has been a concern since the Venice Charter (1964) so far. This approach has also been highlighted in the World Heritage documents. In this case, it is necessary to engage local people in all stages of protection, conservation and management. In addition, the Faro Convention (2005) emphasized that the responsibilities regarding the cultural heritage management must be shared between authorities and civil society to make possible a joint action among different stakeholders. At the site of Bisotun, participatory monitoring means the systematic reporting and recording of the issues regarding the cultural heritage properties provided by people living in the landscape zone in order to achieve sustainable monitoring of cultural heritage properties. In fact, the local people can monitor progress of safeguarding and protecting their heritage by daily observing and reporting relevant issues if any. The main purpose of participatory monitoring in this research is to engage the local community in the monitoring of cultural heritage properties in the Bisotun World Heritage Site. © 2021 ACM.

Precipitation plays a highly significant part in the hydrological cycle and is responsible for depositing most of the freshwater on earth. It can also impact the climate ecosystem. Considerable work has been performed to understand, model and predict precipitation. However, to the best of our knowledge, hardly any interactive visualizations exist that allow end-users to obtain a better perception of local impacts; also there are no specific apps for this purpose. The two goals of our work are thus: to design a visualization tool that illustrates changes in precipitation in a given time period with analysis; and to design a mobile application (app) that displays Sub-Saharan precipitation patterns, both using big data. This work would be advantageous to environmental scientists, as well as local residents of the respective areas. It would also be beneficial to students interested in conducting climate-based research. It addresses the theme of IoT (Internet of Things) which involves providing ubiquitous access to Internet-Based information on platforms such as smartphones and other mobile devices.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology is extensively utilized for the detection of infectious diseases owing to its rapid processing and high sensitivity. Nevertheless, conventional LAMP signaling methods frequently suffer from a lack of sequence specificity. This study integrates a triplex-forming oligonucleotide (TFO) probe into the LAMP process to enhance sequence specificity. This TFO-LAMP technique was applied for the detection of Group B Streptococcus (GBS). The TFO probe is designed to recognize a specific DNA sequence, termed the TFO targeting sequence (TTS), within the amplified product, facilitating detection via fluorescent instrumentation or lateral flow biosensors. A screening method was developed to identify TFO sequences with high affinity to integrate TFO into LAMP, subsequently incorporating a selected TTS into an LAMP primer. In the TFO-LAMP assay, a FAM-labeled TFO is added to target the TTS. This TFO can be captured by an anti-FAM antibody on lateral flow test strips, thus creating a nucleic acid testing biosensor. The efficacy of the TFO-LAMP assay was confirmed through experiments with specimens spiked with varying concentrations of GBS, demonstrating 85% sensitivity at 300 copies and 100% sensitivity at 30,000 copies. In conclusion, this study has successfully developed a TFO-LAMP technology that offers applicability in lateral flow biosensors and potentially other biosensor platforms. © 2024 by the authors.

Liposomes, spherical phospholipid vesicles with a unique morphology mimicking that of body cells, have emerged as versatile nanoparticles for drug delivery. Their biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, targeted delivery, and hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics make them stand out over traditional drug delivery systems. Liposomes can be tailored in size, composition, lamellarity, and surface charge, offering a unique level of customization for various applications. Extensive research in liposome technology has led to the development of a wide range of liposomal formulations with enhanced functionalities, such as PEGylated liposomes, ligand-targeted liposomes, and stimuli-responsive liposomes. Beyond their crucial role in cancer treatment, liposomes play a significant role in influenza, COVID-19, cancer, and hepatitis A vaccines. They are also utilized in pain management, fungal treatment, brain targeting, and topical and ocular drug delivery. This review offers insight into the types of liposomes, their composition, preparation methods, characterization methods, and clinical applications. Additionally, it discusses challenges and highlights potential future directions in liposome-based drug delivery.

This study reports on the fabrication and characterization of a copper oxide (CuO)-based photoactive cell. Copper was thermally evaporated onto two substrates and post-treated using chemical and thermal treatments to obtain different semiconducting types of CuO. Absorption measurements were conducted to obtain the bandgaps of CuO, which were found to be 1.51 eV and 1.21 eV, for the chemically and thermally treated CuO, respectively. Finally, a chronoamperometry test was conducted to confirm the photoresponse of the cell, which showed a doubling of output current values under light conditions compared to dark conditions. © 2023 IEEE.

The goal of the present study is to use prosodic information to improve automatic syntactic parsing of conversational speech in the Switchboard Corpus. To achieve this, an ensemble classifier, based on a Recurrent Neural Network, is developed to predict the parse with the highest Unlabelled Attachment Score (UAS) from the outputs of multiple dependency parsers, based on syntactic and prosodic features. The main syntactic features proposed, which we refer to as "dependency configurations," represent the relative dependency location of each of a pair of consecutive words. Empirical analysis indicates that configurations with a direct dependency between consecutive words are less likely to be associated with major prosodic breaks. Using syntactic features alone, the system achieved an improvement of 1.1% of UAS on the test set, above the best parser in the ensemble, while using syntactic features combined with prosodic features (pauses and normalized duration) led to a further improvement of 0.4%. Both empirical analysis of dependency configurations and parsing improvement suggest a relationship between prosody and direct dependency relationships between consecutive words. © 2020 International Speech Communications Association. Deep learning is revolutionizing the field of medical image segmentation. The U-shaped (Unet) model, with its encoder-decoder architecture and skip connections, has become the dominant architecture for this task. However, variations like Nested-Unet are necessary to address the challenge of adapting network size for datasets of varying scales. This study proposes a novel model based on a multilayer Unet architecture that leverages all output features within nodes of a Nested Unet network. We evaluate the proposed model on four key medical image datasets: electron microscopy (EM), nuclei, polyps (CVC-ClinicDB), and skin lesions. The model achieves impressive Dice scores: 94.08% for EM, 92.68% for nuclei, 87.20% for skin lesions, and 93.02% for the CVC-ClinicDB dataset. These outstanding results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed model compared to recent advancements in the field. Remarkably, the model achieves this performance while maintaining a size that is half that of a traditional Unet model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
