All for one, one for all: Compassionate goal orientation, social support, and work engagement

Though social support plays a critical role in worker well-being and engagement, its mechanisms of action for motivating work engagement remain unclear. Further, literature to date has primarily examined internally-focused personal resources (e.g., confidence, optimism) as a consequence and predictor of job resources such as perceived social support, yet relationally-focused personal resources (e.g., orientation toward others) may have greater relevance in this social context. Extrapolating from associations posited within an expanded job demands-resources model and the egosystem-ecosystem theory of social motivation, this study used a random-intercepts cross-lagged panel model to examine whether a compassionate goal orientation, a novel personal resource, may be a mechanism through which social support at work facilitates work engagement. Using three waves of survey data from 850 working U.S. adults, we demonstrated a reciprocal relationship between a compassionate goal orientation and perceived co-worker support, providing initial evidence for the importance of interpersonal goal orientation in fostering workplace support among colleagues. Yet, we did not find support for a reciprocal relationship between co-worker or supervisor support and work engagement. Our study provides preliminary evidence supporting the importance of a compassionate goal orientation. Insights gained through this work represent a valuable contribution toward a better understanding of factors that promote effective collaboration in the workplace in service of shared organizational goals. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023. corrected publication 2023.

Since their initial inception, large language models have undergone many innovations. One of these innovations concerns multimodality. Several adaptation strategies have been developed to expand LLMs to process multimodal signals. However, the training procedure for these multimodal models is performed on English-only vision-language datasets in the current literature, limiting their capabilities for other languages. This work proposes the first family of LMMs for the Italian language. We trained them using state-of-the-art backbone models and datasets, translated into Italian using the most up-to-date machine translation model available. Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across various domains. However, adapting them to narrative content remains challenging. This paper explores the opportunities in adapting open-source LLMs to narrative contexts, where coherence, plot development, and character consistency are paramount. We investigate existing techniques for adapting and then fine-tuning LLMs on narrative data and propose a solution tailored to the specific demands of narrative generation. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of the proposed approach on the standard dataset WritingPrompts by exploring several corpora for the adaptation step. Moreover, we propose a qualitative evaluation involving human feedback. Results show that the adaption helps the model improve the generation and accuracy of prompts ranking. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which forms the basis of international space law, prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in space and limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes. Despite these provisions, the treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit, and the potential for space to become weaponized remains a significant concern. Recent advancements in space technology and the increasing capabilities of various nations to operate in space have brought the issue to the forefront of international discussions. The development of anti-satellite weapons, the militarization of space infrastructure, and the potential deployment of weaponized platforms in orbit are developments that necessitate a reevaluation of existing treaties and the formulation of new agreements to ensure space remains a zone of peace. Acknowledging that the ideal solution - a new comprehensive treaty - presents significant diplomatic and practical challenges, this project adopts a pragmatic approach. It aims to lay the groundwork for such an ambitious goal through incremental steps, beginning, as an example, with developing a draft resolution. This initial step is envisioned as a catalyst for international dialogue and cooperation, setting the stage for more extensive agreements in the future. By focusing on achievable milestones, such as consensus-building activities, confidence-building measures, and the establishment of a common understanding of the importance of space for humanity's collective future, this project seeks to navigate the complex political and technical terrain towards the ultimate objective of a demilitarized outer space. Genomic and transcriptomic dissection of Theionarchaea in marine ecosystem

Theionarchaea is a recently described archaeal class within the *** it is widely distributed in sediment ecosystems,little is known about its metabolic potential and ecological ***,we used metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to characterize 12 theionarchaeal metagenome-assembled genomes,which were further divided into two subgroups,from coastal mangrove sediments of China and seawater columns of the Yap *** analysis revealed that apart from the canonical sulfhydrogenase,Theionarchaea harbor genes encoding heliorhodopsin,group 4[NiFe]-hydrogenase,and flagellin,in which genes for heliorhodopsin and group 4[NiFe]-hydrogenase were transcribed in mangrove ***,the theionarchaeal substrate spectrum may be broader than previously reported as revealed by metagenomics and metatranscriptomics,and the potential carbon substrates include detrital proteins,hemicellulose,ethanol,and CO_(2).The genes for organic substrate metabolism(mainly detrital protein and amino acid metabolism genes)have relatively higher transcripts in the top sediment layers in mangrove *** addition,co-occurrence analysis suggested that the degradation of these organic compounds by Theionarchaea might be processed in syntrophy with fermenters(e.g.,Chloroflexi)and ***,these observations expand the current knowledge of the metabolic potential of Theionarchaea,and shed light on the metabolic strategies and roles of these archaea in the marine ecosystems.

Defects-induced in perfect phononic crystals (PnCs) allows propagating defect-modes, forbidden in the perfect structure, whose frequencies are within the phononic bandgap interval. These new allowed modes travel following the performed defect paths to release the acoustic energy at specific spatial points. Defects induced in a PnC, composed of steel cylinders (0.8mm radii), squarely disposed of in a water matrix (2mm lattice parameter) allowed to engineer defect-based acoustic demultiplexers and optimized high-Q cavities for ultrasonic waves control. On the one hand, a demultiplexer containing one defect-input port and two output arms is able to allow the efficient transmission of 398 kHz by one output port, inhibiting it through the second one, while 450 kHz, experiments the opposite behavior. The efficient propagation is temperature-tunable when incorporating a PNIPAM thermosensitive hydrogel at each defect. On the second hand, the spatially optimized defects-position as horizontal and diagonal ones along with the propagation axis, increase the quality factor (Q) by over 16 times for the diagonal with respect to the horizontal defect-disposition. Weak-coupling modes for the diagonal configurations explain the observed Q factor increase. Both, theory and experiment results were validated. Efficiently defects-dispositions allow interesting defect-based phenomena which can be useful in PnCs-based ultrasonic technologies. © ICA *** rights reserved

We present the binary model and the eclipse timing variations of the eclipsing binary RR Cae, which consists of a white dwarf eclipsed by an M-type dwarf companion. The multiwavelength optical photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the 0.6-m PROMPT-8 telescope, and the 0.7-m Thai Robotic Telescope at Spring Brook Observatory, combined with archive H α radial velocities from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are analysed. From the data, the physical parameters of the system are obtained along with 430 new times of minima. The TESS light curves in 2018 and 2020 show out-of-eclipse variations, which might be caused by a large spot on the secondary component. The light travel time effect models due to the gravitational interaction of one or two circumbinary objects are adopted to fit the cyclic variations in the RR Cae’s O-C curve. The fitting solution of the O-C curve with one circumbinary object model shows a periodic variation with a period of 16.6 ± 0.2 yr and an amplitude of 14 ± 1 s, which can be caused by a planet with a minimum mass of 3.4 ± 0.2 MJup. When we consider the model with two circumbinary objects, the O-C curve shows cyclic variations with periods of 15.0 ± 0.5 yr and 39 ± 5 yr and amplitudes of 12 ± 1 s and 20 ± 5 s, respectively, corresponding to minimum masses of 3.0 ± 0.3 MJup and 2.7 ± 0.7 MJup © 2023 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society.

Prediction Tool on Fine Particle Pollutants and Air Quality for Environmental Engineering

This article focuses on the research, design and implementation of a prediction tool for air quality to estimate pollutant concentrations, contributing to environmental engineering. It addresses prediction of fine particle air pollutants of diameter less than 2.5 µm (particulate matter 2.5), their concentration being substantially influenced by urban traffic. We collect worldwide multicity data from health-related public sources on which mining is performed using classical data mining/machine learning paradigms: association rules, clustering and classification. Challenges include adapting appropriate techniques based on data, and capturing subtle domain-specific aspects. The prediction tool is built using knowledge discovered by mining, leveraging health standards, catering to novice, intermediate and expert users. The prediction output is accurate, efficient, interpretable and useful as evident from our experiments. The tool is helpful for urban decision support. This work is beneficial in developing software systems such as intelligent tutors, mobile device apps and smart city tools. It contributes to smart environment, mobility and living, making a positive impact on smart cities and sustainability. In this work, we claim that classical computational paradigms in their fundamental form can be adapted to solve environmental engineering problems, with easy comprehension, as per the Occam’s razor principle that advocates simplicity. This article constitutes applied research: using computational techniques to solve domain-specific problems. Future work includes exploring models in deep learning such as CNN and Bi-LSTM, and considering different types of pollutants as well as other sources besides multicity traffic data, to conduct further studies.
