In the prosthetic field, quantifying interfacial pressure distribution between the amputee's residual limb and the socket's internal environment is imperative for developing new technologies. However, the commercially available pressure sensors have several disadvantages, namely external power supply requirements, low stability, high cost, and complexities related to integrating the sensor system into prosthetic devices. Herein, we propose a self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based flexible tactile sensor array system to monitor prosthetic socket internal pressure distribution in real-time. The proposed sensor consists of biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber membranes as triboelectric materials. The biodegradable PCL nanofiber membrane, fabricated via a scalable and cost-effective electrospinning process, possesses a high surface area-to-volume ratio, facilitating enhanced charge generation during triboelectrification. The as-fabricated TENG-based tactile sensor is highly stable up to 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the voltage of the tactile sensor is independent of different temperature and humidity values, demonstrating the stability of the sensor under various environmental conditions. Finally, we successfully integrated the tactile sensor array within a prosthetic device to monitor real-time pressure distribution inside the prosthetic socket during gait simulation. We believe that the proposed novel design provides a new dimension for the rapid development of self-powered, low-cost, and highly stable pressure monitoring systems with considerable potential for commercialization. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Outcomes of a cluster randomised control trial of Be Real's BodyKind;A universal body image programme for adolescents in Ireland

Body image has a key impact on adolescent mental health. Yet there are few evidence-based interventions for older adolescents (aged 14 + years). This study evaluated the effectiveness of Be Real's BodyKind, a strengths-focused, gender-inclusive programme, culturally adapted for older adolescents in Ireland, which combines empirically-supported principles of cognitive dissonance, self-compassion, compassion for others, and social activism to support positive body image. Twenty-three second-level schools in Ireland participated in a pragmatic cluster randomised controlled trial. Overall, 1099 students (612 girls, 460 boys, 27 gender minority students) in Transition (4th) Year aged 15-16 years (M=15.4, SD=.5) were randomly assigned to receive the 4-session intervention delivered by teachers (n = 630) or waitlist control (n = 469). Outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-intervention and 2-month follow-up. Significant improvements in the main outcome of body appreciation (p = .03, d=.17) were observed at post-intervention. Girls demonstrated higher levels of body appreciation at post-intervention, and self-compassion at follow-up, but not boys. No significant changes in body satisfaction, psychological wellbeing, body ideal internalisation, compassion for others or social activism were observed. Findings indicate that girls may experience brief gains in body appreciation, but refining the programme and optimising implementation may be warranted to enhance programme impact, particularly in boys.

The design and development of a new kind of cost-effective electrode material with excellent selectivity and stability are still a great challenge in the field of electrochemical sensors. Recently, researchers have paid more attention to the electrochemical reduction of nitro compounds due to their hazardous nature. Nitro compounds play a vital role in various industrial applications. However, the direct discharge of nitro compounds to the environment as industrial wastewater is harmful. In this study, a nanocomposite made of 1D graphene nanoribbons decorated with manganese dioxide (GNR-MnO2) was prepared to fabricate an electrochemical transducer for the determination of nitrofurantoin (NFT) in biofluids. First, 1D GNR was prepared by unzipping of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Second, the GNR was decorated with MnO2 by the hydrothermal reduction method. As-prepared GNR-MnO2 nanocomposite was comprehensively characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy with EDX, XRD, UV-visible, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Moreover, GNR-MnO2-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited good electrocatalytic activity toward NFT. The electroreduction of NFT was found at -0.40 V which was 50 mV lower than bare GCE. GNR-MnO2 nanocomposite modified GCE showed a well-defined linear reduction peak current for NFT from 10 nM to 1,000 μM. The selectivity of the sensor was also analyzed in the presence of other nitro compounds which confirmed that NFT can be selectively detected at -0.4 V. The GNR-MnO2 modified electrode was also able to separate reduction peaks of other nitro compounds. In addition, the detection of NFT was carried out in human urine samples with a good recovery of 99.60%-98.60%. © 2023 Ramila D. Nagarajan et al.

Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for heart failure (HF), contributing to its development through metabolic, neurohormonal, haemodynamic, and inflammatory alterations. While overweight/obesity increases the risk of developing HF, its impact on patient outcomes remains complex. The "obesity paradox" suggests that a higher BMI may be associated with improved survival in patients with established HF. However, recent GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) trials suggest that intentional weight loss positively influences outcomes in overweight/obese patients with HF. This seemingly contradictory evidence highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms linking adiposity to HF outcomes. A more precise characterization of adiposity phenotypes using alternative and accurate measures of pathological fat accumulation is crucial in identifying individuals who may benefit most from anti-obesity treatments. In this context, recent research underscores the role of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) in HF pathophysiology, as it directly influences cardiac function and structure through inflammatory, metabolic, and mechanical effects. This narrative review summarises current evidence on the impact of weight loss on HF outcomes, focusing on recent GLP-1 RA trial results. Additionally, it highlights epidemiological and molecular data supporting EAT as a novel adiposity measure that might allow refining patient selection for pharmacological weight-loss treatments. Finally, it emphasizes the need for future research to identify causal pathways linking alternative measures of visceral fat accumulation to HF outcomes. These efforts will be essential in optimizing the benefits of novel weight-loss treatments, ensuring effective and individualized therapeutic strategies for overweight or obese patients with HF.

PURPOSE:Pediatric hydrocephalus is the most common cause of surgically treatable neurological disease in children. Controversies exist whether endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt placement is the most appropriate treatment for pediatric hydrocephalus. This study aimed to compare the risk of re-operation and death between the two procedures. METHODS:We performed a retrospective population-based cohort study and included patients younger than 20-years-old who underwent CSF shunt or ETV for hydrocephalus from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. RESULTS:A total of 3,555 pediatric patients from 2004 to 2017 were selected, including 2,340 (65.8%) patients that received CSF shunt placement and 1215 (34.2%) patients that underwent ETV. The incidence of all-cause death was 3.31 per 100 person-year for CSF shunt group and 2.52 per 100 person-year for ETV group, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66-0.94, p = 0.009). The cumulative incidence competing risk for reoperation was 31.2% for the CSF shunt group and 26.4% for the ETV group, with an adjusted subdistribution HR of 0.82 (95% CI = 0.70-0.96, p = 0.015). Subgroup analysis showed that ETV was beneficial for hydrocephalus coexisting with brain or spinal tumor, central nervous system infection, and intracranial hemorrhage. CONCLUSION:Our data indicates ETV is a better operative procedure for pediatric hydrocephalus when advanced surgical techniques and instruments are available.

Search engine privacy has not been an option for web exploration in the past. Search history returns to users as personalized merchandise promotion from search engine companies. Here we demonstrate a privacy-guaranteed internet search method, provided with the entire article as a query, can be correctly carried out without revealing users' sensitive content by a degenerate, irreversible, encoding scheme and an efficient FM-index search routine, generally used in the next-generation sequencing. In our solution, Sapiens Aperio Veritas Engine (S.A.V.E.), every word in the query is encoded into one of 12 "amino acids" comprising a pseudo-biological sequence (PBS) at users' local machines. The PBS-mediated plagiarism detection is done by users' submission of locally encoded PBS through our cloud service to locate duplicates in the collected web contents, currently including all the English and Chinese Wikipedia pages and Open Access journal articles, as of April 2021, which had been encoded in the same way as the query. It is found that PBSs with a length longer than 12, comprising a combination of more than 12 "amino acids", can return correct results with a false positive rate © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease and patients do not always manage the disease properly. Therefore, creating tools that help diabetics self-manage their condition over time is of the utmost importance. Technological tools that include features meeting this population's needs, with an integrated personalized feedback system, in an environment of gamified incentives, may be the way for developing a sustained app's usage. This work aims to present a still in development, novel approach to managing diabetes type 2 with a focus on data analysis from user-inputs, gamification, and personalized coaching, with an accessible user interface. Thus, we will present some functionalities, in particular the theoretical and practical concept that is behind this development, namely the Transtheoretical model of behavior change to create different profiles, to provide customized feedback according to the user's behavioral stage, and also to ascertain if it induces any improvement at the behavioral level.

We characterize k–colorability of a simplicial graph via the intrinsic algebraic structure of the associated right-angled Artin group.
