We present the transit timing variation (TTV) and planetary atmosphere analysis of the Neptune-mass planet HAT-P-26 b. We present a new set of 13 transit light curves from optical ground-based observations and combine them with light curves from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and previously published ground-based data. We refine the planetary parameters of HAT-P-26 b and undertake a TTV analysis using 33 transits obtained over seven years. The TTV analysis shows an amplitude signal of 1.98 ± 0.05 minutes, which could result from the presence of an additional ∼ 0.02 MJup planet at the 1:2 mean-motion resonance orbit. Using a combination of transit depths spanning optical to near-infrared wavelengths, we find that the atmosphere of HAT-P-26 b contains (formula presented) of H2O with a derived temperature of (formula presented) K. Chromatographic investigation on the ethyl acetate extract of the soft coral Lobophytum durum collected from the waters of Guishan Island in northeast Taiwan resulted in the isolation of three sterols 1–3, including one new sterol, 3β-hydroxy-25-methylene-5-cholesten-7-one (1), and two previously reported sterols, 7-oxogorgosterol (2), and (24R)-ergostane-3β,5α,6β,25-tetraol 25-monoacetate (3). The structures of sterols 1–3 were determined by extensive spectroscopic data analysis and by comparison with literatures. Additionally, the 24R-configuration of sterol 3 was identified by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 13C chemical shifts for first time. The anti-inflammatory activities of sterols 1–3 were evaluated by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase against activated human neutrophils. © 2023

This work introduces compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems and their role in mitigating the lag between energy supply and demand. The concept of energy storage relies on storing energy during periods of low demand to supply it during periods of high demand, where CAES stands as a scalable solution with the ability to house ancillary systems in order to harvest useful effects such as expansion cooling. CAES on its own compares well with electrochemical batteries, while bearing a simpler system design and less stringent operational requirements; however, with the integration of thermal management the role of CAES can be extended to produce chilled water that can be used for cooling applications. Not only does expansion cooling broaden the utilization of CAES, it has also enhanced the energetic efficiency of the system by 4%. Future work within the scope of CAES includes the integration of heat pipes and latent heat energy storage, and experimenting with different working gases.

The Role of Animal-Assisted Therapy in Enhancing Patients' Well-Being: Systematic Study of the Qualitative and Quantitative Evidence

Background:Animal-assisted therapy, also known as pet therapy, is a therapeutic intervention that involves animals to enhance the well-being of individuals across various populations and settings. Objective:This systematic study aims to assess the outcomes of animal-assisted therapy interventions and explore the associated policies. Methods:A total of 16 papers published between 2015 and 2023 were selected for analysis. These papers were chosen based on their relevance to the research topic of animal-assisted therapy and their availability in scholarly databases. Thematic synthesis and meta-analysis were used to synthesize the qualitative and quantitative data extracted from the selected papers. Results:The analysis included 16 studies that met the inclusion criteria and were deemed to be of moderate or higher quality. Among these studies, 4 demonstrated positive results for therapeutic mediation and one for supportive mediation in psychiatric disorders. Additionally, all studies showed positive outcomes for depression and neurological disorders. Regarding stress and anxiety, 3 studies indicated supportive mediation, while 2 studies showed activating mediation. Conclusions:The overall assessment of animal-assisted therapy shows promise as an effective intervention in promoting well-being among diverse populations. Further research and the establishment of standardized outcome assessment measures and comprehensive policies are essential for advancing the field and maximizing the benefits of animal-assisted therapy.

Emboli stroke following migration of carotid foreign body: A case report

Foreign body embolization can cause intracranial artery occlusion with ischemic stroke. Reported etiologies include post cerebrovascular interventions, migration of esophageal foreign body and neck trauma. We reported a case with punctured wound at left neck, X-ray and computed tomography revealed a foreign body located in the carotid region. The patient eventually developed stroke symptoms in the next day after operation. Non-contrast brain Computer tomography at that time revealed that porcelain fragment located at the suprasellar area, and infarction of the left anterior basal ganglion. Our patient is the first reported case having an embolic stroke secondary to distal migration of a foreign body from the carotid artery after neck trauma. We call attention to this rare neurologic complication of neck trauma with foreign body retention. Appropriate and prompt identification of concurrent vascular injuries with retention of foreign body is strongly advised in neck trauma patients. © 2021 The Authors

Progress in experimental assessments of buoyancy work energy storage

This work reiterates the potential of buoyancy work energy storage (BWES) systems which has been presented in previously published experimental-based literature. The concept of buoyancy work can be grasped when studying the operation of mobility devices such as hot air balloons or boats, where buoyancy plays a key role in keeping them afloat. Conventional experimental BWES systems that were studied in previous literature consist of a water tank, a submergible buoy, a motor/generator carrying out the charging/discharging processes, respectively, and a data acquisition interface. It is interesting to see the progression of this technology at lab scale, where initial designs included the use of a barrel as the water tank, and Styrofoam cut-outs as buoys. One design utilized a ring with multiple Styrofoam buoys attached to it, and it was later enhanced by adding helical engravings to the buoys' surface to affect its interaction with water positively during descension and ascension. The latest study added to this timeline of ongoing development investigates the effect of different buoy materials, surface coatings, buoy infill gasses, and load.

Vanadate-based photocatalysts have recently attracted substantial attention owing to their outstanding photocatalytic activity for degrading organic pollutants and generating energy via photocatalytic processes. However, the relatively high price of vanadium has hindered the development of vanadate-based photocatalysts for various applications. Spent catalysts obtained from oil refineries typically contain a significant quantity of vanadium, making them valuable for recovery and utilization as precursors for the production of high-value-added photocatalysts. In this study, we transformed the V present in spent catalysts produced by the petrochemical industry into ternary vanadate-based photocatalysts [BiVO4/InVO4/Ag3VO4 (BVO/IVO/AVO, respectively)] designed for water remediation. The ternary composites revealed an enhanced photocatalytic capability, which was 1.42 and 5.1 times higher than those of the binary BVO/IVO and pristine AVO due to the facilitated charge separation. The ternary photocatalysts not only effectively treated wastewater containing various organic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), rhodamine 6G (R6G), and brilliant green (BG), but also exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance in the degradation of antibiotics, reduction of Cr(VI), and bacterial inactivation. This paper proposes a feasible route for recycling industrial waste as a source of vanadium to produce highly efficient vanadate-based photocatalysts. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive malignant primary brain tumor, with a dismal prognosis and a devastating overall survival. Despite aggressive surgical resection and adjuvant treatment, average survival remains approximately 14.6 months. The brain tumor microenvironment is heterogeneous, comprising multiple populations of tumor, stromal, and immune cells. Tumor cells evade the immune system by suppressing several immune functions to enable survival. Gliomas release immunosuppressive and tumor-supportive soluble factors into the microenvironment, leading to accelerated cancer proliferation, invasion, and immune escape. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from bone marrow, adipose tissue, or umbilical cord are a promising tool for cell-based therapies. One crucial mechanism mediating the therapeutic outcomes often seen in MSC application is their tropism to sites of injury. Furthermore, MSCs interact with host immune cells to regulate the inflammatory response, and data points to the possibility of using MSCs to achieve immunomodulation in solid tumors. Interleukin 1β, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α, transforming growth factor β, and stromal cell–derived factor 1 are notably up-regulated in glioblastoma and dually promote immune and MSC trafficking. Mesenchymal stem cells have widely been regarded as hypoimmunogenic, enabling this cell-based administration across major histocompatibility barriers. In this review, we will highlight (1) the bidirectional communication of glioma cells and tumor-associated immune cells, (2) the inflammatory mediators enabling leukocytes and transplantable MSC migration, and (3) review preclinical and human clinical trials using MSCs as delivery vehicles. Implantable biomedical devices (IBDs) have garnered wide-scale attention in recent years due to their enormous contribution to the biomedical sector. However, an uninterrupted and reliable power source has consistently been the primary barrier for IBDs, which is greatly alleviated by batteries. The widespread application of battery-powered IBDs is hindered by several limitations, including bulkiness, limited capacity and shelf-life, and expenditure associated with surgery-based battery recharge/replacement. To address these challenges, state-of-the-art self-powering technologies have emerged, including implantable piezoelectric nanogenerators (iPENGs) and implantable triboelectric nanogenerators (iTENGs). These technologies enable IBDs to operate autonomously by harnessing the minute mechanical movements of internal organs, such as heartbeat, respiration, blood circulation, muscle contraction/relaxation, and lung vibration. This review focuses on the recent advancements in iTENGs and iPENGs for the development of self-powered IBDs with a wide range of applications, including energy harvesting from biomechanical and ultrasound sources and energy storage using batteries and capacitors. This study also explores the extensive sensing applications of IBDs in various areas including cardiac, gastrointestinal, bladder, and ligament-strain monitoring. Finally, therapeutic applications of IBDs, such as nerve stimulation, bone stimulation, cartilage therapy, tissue regeneration, muscle stimulation, drug delivery, and diabetes management are discussed. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
