The world's largest butterfly genus Delias, commonly known as Jezebels, comprises ca. 251 species found throughout Asia, Australia, and Melanesia. Most species are endemic to islands in the Indo-Australian Archipelago or to New Guinea and nearby islands in Melanesia, and many species are restricted to montane habitats over 1200 m. We inferred an extensively sampled and well-supported molecular phylogeny of the group to better understand the spatial and temporal dimensions of its diversification. The remarkable diversity of Delias evolved in just ca. 15–16 Myr (crown age). The most recent common ancestor of a clade with most of the species dispersed out of New Guinea ca. 14 Mya, but at least six subsequently diverging lineages dispersed back to the island. Diversification was associated with frequent dispersal of lineages among the islands of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, and the divergence of sister taxa on a single landmass was rare and occurred only on the largest islands, most notably on New Guinea. We conclude that frequent inter-island dispersal during the Neogene—likely facilitated by frequent sea level change—sparked much diversification during that period. Many extant New Guinea lineages started diversifying 5 Mya, suggesting that orogeny facilitated their diversification. Our results largely agree with the most recently proposed species group classification system, and we use our large taxon sample to extend this system to all described species. Finally, we summarize recent insights to speculate how wing pattern evolution, mimicry, and sexual selection might also contribute to these butterflies’ rapid speciation and diversification. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.

ABSTRACT IMPACT: Leveraging partnerships with faith-based institutions and community centers in at-risk NYC neighborhoods, the H2H program breaks down barriers to engaging with the medical establishment and addresses the increasing burden of diabetes and CVD risk factors in the most vulnerable individuals. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Screening for modifiable risk factors is critical for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction. Low-income, urban communities often encounter barriers to care. Community-academic outreach partnerships are vital in addressing such disparities and promoting health equity and culturally targeted interventions among high-risk populations. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In 2010, the Weill Cornell Clinical and Translational science Center along with Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) and Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing (HBSON) launched Heart to Heart (H2H), a community outreach program partnering with faith-based centers to offer free health screenings and education to some of New York City’s (NYC) most vulnerable communities. Participants work with undergraduate, nursing, medical and dietician students to complete a demographics and health questionnaire followed by vital signs and point-of-care blood testing. Participants then receive personalized health education, nutrition and lifestyle counseling by student volunteers, precepted by WCM Primary Care and HBSON faculty. Participants are provided information on local free or low-cost clinics as necessary for follow-up. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: To date H2H held 125 events and 5,952 screenings. Mean age of the participants was 54.3 (SD 39.6) and 3,682 (63.1%) were female. 74.2% identified as non-white. 42.1% were uninsured. 32.3% reported annual income of less than $20k. 18.3% of participants reported not having seen a doctor in the past year. 40.7% reported preexisting hypertension, of which 74.5% were on medication and 78% with sub-optimal control. 15.7% had been previously diagnosed with diabetes, of wh

A complete emotional expression typically contains a complex temporal course in a natural conversation. Related research on utterance-level, segment-level and multi-level processing lacks understanding of the underlying relation of emotional speech. In this work, a convolutional neural network (CNN) with audio word-based embedding is proposed for emotion modeling. In this study, vector quantization is first applied to convert the low level features of each speech frame into audio words using k-means algorithm. Word2vec is adopted to convert an input speech utterance into the corresponding audio word vector sequence. Finally, the audio word vector sequences of the training emotional speech data with emotion annotation are used to construct the CNN- based emotion model. The NCKU-ES database, containing seven emotion categories: happiness, boredom, anger, anxiety, sadness, surprise and disgust, was collected and five-fold cross validation was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed CNN-based method for speech emotion recognition. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieved an emotion recognition accuracy of 82.34%, improving by 8.7% compared to the Long Short Term Memory (LSTM)- based method, which faced the challenging issue of long input sequence. Comparing with raw features, the audio word-based embedding achieved an improvement of 3.4% for speech emotion recognition.

Review of the use of mangrove forests in supporting the socio-economic life of fishing communities

Mangrove forests have an important function in human life that cannot be replaced by other functions. The existence of mangrove forests has six main functions, namely biological, ecological, physical, social, economic and chemical functions. This article discusses the description of mangrove forest management in meeting the needs of the economic and social functions of the fishing communities on the coast of Merauke Regency, Papua Province, which were reviewed descriptively using relevant literature studies. In terms of economic function, mangrove forests provide economic value for fishing communities because mangrove forests become habitat for crabs, fish and other marine biota that are captured and sold as the main source of family income. In addition, the use of mangrove forests by fishermen on the coast is used as firewood and building materials. The high utilization of mangrove forests by coastal communities that ignores ecological sustainability causes damage to mangrove forests that threatens the sustainability of ecological functions. Damage to mangrove forests in Merauke in the period 2000-2005 was recorded as wide as 2,416 ha while in the 2005-2010 period damage reached 2,233 ha of the total area of the Merauke mangrove forest which reached 216,001.95 Ha or 6.98% of the Merauke forest area. Based on this, the management of mangrove forest utilization needs to get more attention from various parties so that the ecological function of mangrove forests as a condition of sustainable development, especially for fishing communities on the coast, can be realized in Merauke Regency.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthessis is highly related to a variety of atopic diseases, and several genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have demonstrated the association between genes and IgE level. In this study, we conducted the largest genome-wide association study of IgE involving a Taiwanese Han population. Eight independent variants exhibited genome-wide significance. Among them, an intronic SNP of CD28, rs1181388, and an intergenic SNP, rs1002957030, on 11q23.2 were identified as novel signals for IgE. Seven of the loci were replicated successfully in a meta-analysis using data on Japanese population. Among all the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) regions, HLA-DQA1*03:02 - HLA-DQB1*03:03 was the most significant haplotype (OR = 1.25, SE = 0.02, FDR = 1.6 × 10), corresponding to HLA-DQA1 Asp160 and HLA-DQB1 Leu87 amino acid residues. The genetic correlation showed significance between IgE and allergic diseases including asthma, atopic dermatitis, and pollinosis. IgE PRS was significantly correlated with total IgE levels. Furthermore, the top decile IgE polygenic risk score (PRS) group had the highest risk of asthma for the Taiwan Biobank and Biobank Japan cohorts. IgE PRS may be used to aid in predicting the occurrence of allergic reactions before symptoms occur and biomarkers are detectable. Our study provided a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of genomic variants, including complex HLA alleles, on serum IgE levels.

Technologies like additive manufacturing, microfluidics, and electrospray show a possibility of generating a variety of 3-Dimensional structures but seriously suffer in adapting and utilizing the wide variety of available biocompatible materials because of innate diverse physical and chemical properties of biomaterials. It is very important to have a technology which can be viable and dynamically adaptable for different types of materials in generating uniform structures.
