Background: Flood is one of the most destructive natural disasters of climate change effects in West Africa. Flood risk occurrence is a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors, which calls for a better understanding of its spatial extent. The aim of this paper is to identify, and map areas of flood risk in Abidjan district. Results: This work is based on the integration of multi-criteria data including slope, drainage density, type of soil, Isohyet, population density, land use and sewer system density within ArcGIS interface. The resulting AHP flood risk map shows that areas under high and very high flood risk covers 34 % of the study area. Conclusion: The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method used as a multi-criteria analysis allowed the integration of several elements under two criteria, hazards and vulnerability, for flood risk assessment and mapping. Results revealed that, Abidjan district is heavily exposed to the risk of flooding. Eight out of thirteen (8/13) municipalities within the district are at a high risk of flooding which calls for decision makers to effectively develop strategies for future flood occurrences within the Abidjan district (South of Côte d’Ivoire). © 2016, Danumah et al.

The expansion of urbanization and demographic changes defines not only economic demands but makes governments increasingly experience a serious force toward a sustainable development, which causes a need for a qualified and retaining competitive workforce. In view of this trend, governments and businesses start considering technology as vital enabler to solve the rising urbanization issues and improve the living and working environments according to a set of priorities. Simultaneously, competency and skills development are seen as the critical issue for the workforce and the workplaces. Accordingly, the complex interrelationship between strategic management, human capital management, and the overall quality management in an educational as well as enterprise setting move closer to the focus of research. This paper discusses an emerging area of research, which explores the utilization of both, advanced technologies in terms of business intelligence and analytic techniques in a multicomponent architecture and a sustainable competency-based human capital strategy. The novel approach targets at an alignment of one of the most important higher education outputs, namely the human capital, with market needs and thus, maximizing the benefits of higher education in achieving sustainable economic development.

In this study we investigate the recently introduced competition format for the top association football division in Poland (similar to one used in, e.g., Belgium and Kazakhstan). We compare it to the double round-robin tournament which is the most prevalent league for-mat among European leagues. In a simulation study we show that the new league format has better ability to determine the strongest competitor as the winner of a league as well as it yields higher correlation with theoretical latent teams' strength parameters in the model.

In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), energy efficiency is among the most important factors since the lifetime of an unattended node is limited by its battery lifetime. In infrastructure-less WSNs, in order to use their resources efficiently, nodes can be organized hierarchically. In this case, long range communication is entrusted to a subset of nodes, the Cluster Heads (CHs): each CH acts as a gateway between the local nodes in its cluster and the other CHs in the network. When in this role, a node must stand a heavier traffic and consume more resources: fairness dictates that the role has to be taken in turn by each node in an area that fits the task. However, a selfish node may adopt several strategies to save its energy: it can make itself unavailable for the role of CH, or, when in that role, it can avoid relaying packets. In this work, we study the impact of selfish nodes on the performance of the cluster based algorithm LEACH. By taking into consideration several Quality of Service metrics, we quantify the extent of performance degradation as a function of the percentage of selfish nodes. We show that, when the percentage of selfish nodes is 75%, only 37% of packets reach the base station, network lifetime reduces to 40% of rounds and packet retransmission attempts is close to 63%.

In the experiment described in this article, students gain an awareness of the environmental problems caused by invasive species. Students simulate invasive plant-litter depths, using pots containing germinating native plant seeds, soil, and plant litter, to understand how human-in- troduced invasive species can hinder the germination and growth of native plants. This lesson is geared toward grades 6-8 and was originally taught near the end of the school year as part of a unit on ecology and invasive species. Prior to this activity, students should have learned about data analysis, the structure and function of a cell, meiosis and mitosis, genetics, and evolution. Teachers Should allow three to four weeks for setup and monitoring of and reporting on the lab during the month of May. Multi-sensor based classification of professionals' activities plays a key role in ensuring the success of an his/her goals. In this paper we present the winning solution to the AAIA'15 Tagging Firefighter Activities at a Fire Scene data mining competition. The approach is based on a Random Forest classifier trained on an input data set with almost 5000 features describing the underlying time series of sensory data.
