Use of sensors systems to monitor the mobility of elderly

Even presenting risk of falls or mobility difficulties, many seniors prefer to live independently as long as possible. Thus, there is a need for solutions to enable independent living safely and to strengthen family support. Among them are the collection devices that assist in monitoring and quality of life of seniors. This paper aims to conduct a survey of devices developed to capture signal monitoring and mobility aid for the elderly. The devices were grouped into a main category (sensors) followed by secondary categories in relation to the type of use of the sensors (aid device with sensors, robotics and smart homes). Data were analyzed descriptively, listing the products with the types of use. The study raised a total of 22 products. It is observed that most of the feedback systems is to use sensor systems alone, without being used in sets with other technologies like assistive devices or robotics. Most of the technologies has been developed for detecting falls, and fewer tasks are transfer and mobility in the community. We emphasize the importance of unity of catchment systems signals with assistive technologies, in addition to monitoring the elderly provide direct aid in performing the task performed.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been established as a modeling organism in biomedical research for several decades. Its hermaphrodite germ line encompasses key developmental concepts like stem cell differentiation and apoptosis;therefore it provides a good model system for these basic concepts. Here, we have extended and refined our previous computational model, which encompasses developmental landmarks and the resulting movement of germ cells along the gonadal tube. We have used the molecular dynamics (MD) framework to model the physical movement of cells due to the force arising from cell divisions. The model simulation was calibrated with experimental time and it is in accordance with experimental observations. In addition, the model provides means for testing hypotheses regarding the behaviour of mutated germ lines and the potential mechanisms causing physiological apoptosis, which are difficult to assess experimentally. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Based on a thorough literature review of social tagging and on technology acceptance models, we developed and empirically validated a motivational model to predict users' acceptance to add and share tagging content. Four factors successfully predicted users' intention to add and share metadata tagging content. Unlike previous studies on virtual communities, Reciprocity was found to be positively related to attitude whereas, in line with previous research, Ease of Use and Personal Productivity were confirmed to have substantial influence on users' attitude, which in turn affects the intention towards creating and sharing tagging content. Our findings are expected to shed light on developing strategies to understand and promote tagging content contribution and sharing which have the potential to increase the collective power and intelligence of the community. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Cullin-RING-ligases (CRLs) comprise the largest class of multisubunit E3 ubiquitin ligases, which regulate a broad range of cellular processes. Cullin3 (Cul3) recently emerged as an important regulator of intracellular trafficking, in particular secretion and endosome maturation. Here we summarize and discuss possible functions and substrates of Cul3 in the endocytic system.

Characteristics of Leachate at Sukawinatan Landfill, Palembang, Indonesia

Landfill (TPA) Sukawinatan Palembang is an open dumping system which covers an area of 25 hectares. This system may bring an environmental damage to the surrounding area because it does not provide leachate treatment. Leachate is the landfill waste that dissolves many compounds that contain pollutants from both organic substances and heavy metal origin. This paper presents the results of laboratory analysis on samples of leachate as well as shallow groundwater from the surrounding area. The results were compared to established quality standards to evaluate whether the leachate has influenced the quality of the shallow groundwater in the surrounding area. The results show that there are some indications that the quality of groundwater has been polluted by the leachate of both organic substances and heavy metals produced by the Sukawinatan landfill.

Editor's Summary As big data takes the limelight, it is critical that the value of research data is appreciated and the field of information science garners respect for its contributions. Despite being a logical leader in data management and curation, information science competes with other disciplines in handling research data and often fails to demonstrate its own expertise. Two developments presented through the annual Research Data Access & Preservation (RDAP) Summits hold promise for promoting the field and demonstrating its relevance to data management topics. First, the use of formal and systematic planning for data management is expanding, driven by requirements of many funding agencies. Second, research is offering insights into how researchers appraise, share and reuse data, with identification of data quality indicators related to satisfaction. As the effective use of research data becomes more pressing, the field of information science should lead in demonstrating the value derived from professional data curation, and the RDAP community must define and articulate its own research agenda.

Canada has seen some community approaches to watershed management similar to network governance, citizen advisory boards, and participatory action mechanisms. These collaborative approaches are highlighted in scholarship, but are limited by context as implementation is not utilized well beyond local situations. The successes of Nova Scotia wetlands are generalizable, as they provide applicable knowledge about natural resource governance with limited federal guidelines, numerous exclusionary authorities, and new regional development tactics that are beneficial for many. In practice, this case study specifically explains the role of earnest, local, and inclusive participation that is well coordinated with multiple civic agencies. Increasing concentrations of selenium oxoanions in the environment are placing many animals at risk for reproduction failure and deformities. The understanding of binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions to iron and manganese based oxide minerals could lead to enhanced understanding of selenium mobility in the environment. In this study, the binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions, selenite and selenate, to non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe3O4, Mn3O4. and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials were investigated through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy studies revealed the oxidation state of selenite and selenate remains the same after binding occurs to all nanomaterials in pH 2, 4, or 6 environments. The binding modes of selenite and selenate were determined to be bidentate binuclear through use of Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and were independent of nanomaterials, synthetic technique, and pH. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

Metabolic Syndrome and Perioperative Complications During Elective Surgery Using General Anesthesia

Introduction Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a cluster of alterations associated to high risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. Although Metabolic Syndrome is a public health issue, little has been studied about its impact in the anesthetic-surgical scene. Aims To analyze the correlation level between MS and perioperative complications, in patients under programmed surgery with general anesthesia technique in Cartagena, Colombia. Materials and methods A case control study was designed, where 300 patients were enrolled: 150 cases and 150 controls. Socio-demographic, hemodynamics and respiratory variables, as well as surgical complications (hypotension, hypertension, hypoxemia, bleeding, moderated-severe pain and post chirurgical nausea-vomiting) were registered. Fisher's exact test and X2, where appropriated were employed to compare categorical data. A logistic regression model was applied to calculate correlation between variables. Results Surgical complications were more frequent in cases group (P<.001). Differences in age and ASA physical status were also found (P<.05). MS was correlated to perioperative complications (OR: 3.31; P<.05). ASA III physical status was another risk factor to post chirurgical complications development (OR: 4.01; P<.05). None mortality case was reported. Conclusions In a comparison with healthy population, Metabolic Syndrome represented a risk factor to perioperative complications development. According to results, further prevention and approach guidelines in order to reduce perioperative complications associated to Metabolic Syndrome. Red blood cell (RBC) aggregation is a reversible process which occurs in the presence of increased plasma fibrinogen concentration and low flow conditions. It results in the RBCs forming structures that resemble "stacks of coins" and/or clusters impairing blood flow and the ability of oxygen to diffuse to surrounding tissues. We investigate the use of photoacoustics (PA) to detect and monitor RBC aggregation and the effect of aggregation on the sample oxygenation level. In this study, porcine RBCs were illuminated at 750nm and 1064 nm and the oxygen saturation of each sample was estimated. Aggregation was induced by varying the concentration of Dextran-70. Changes in the photoacoustic signal strength suggest that in the presence of RBC aggregates, the release of oxygen into the surroundings is impaired. A 30% increase in oxygen saturation was measured based on changes in the PA signal when comparing the non-aggregated and aggregated blood samples. This work demonstrates that PA imaging has the potential to detect changes due to RBC aggregation and monitor oxygenation level.
