Given a budget on total model size, one must decide whether to train a single, large neural network or to combine the predictions of many smaller networks. We study this trade-off for ensembles of random-feature ridge regression models. We prove that when a fixed number of trainable parameters are partitioned among K independently trained models, K = 1 achieves optimal performance, provided the ridge parameter is optimally tuned. We then derive scaling laws which describe how the test risk of an ensemble of regression models decays with its total size. We identify conditions on the kernel and task eigenstructure under which ensembles can achieve near-optimal scaling laws. Training ensembles of deep convolutional neural networks on CIFAR-10 and a transformer architecture on C4, we find that a single large network outperforms any ensemble of networks with the same total number of parameters, provided the weight decay and feature-learning strength are tuned to their optimal values. Effects of Afterschool programs in Public Libraries on Disadvantaged Children: The Case of the New Taipei City Libraryψ

This study aims to investigate effects of afterschool programs in public libraries on disadvantaged children in Taiwan, which serves to demonstrate the value of public libraries for supporting social justice. This study was qualitative in nature. Interviews and observations were employed for data collection. Study participants included: 22 children, 13 parents, eight volunteers, and seven librarians. Findings of this study show that the reasons for parents allowing their children to participate in the program were a lack of time to take care of their children, an inadequate home learning environment, their children requiring assistance needed for to complete their schoolwork, and the meal voucher incentives. In addition, the main activities the children participated in in the public library afterschool programs were finishing their homework and independent reading;other activities, such as reading together, receiving help with their homework, art projects, and games, were arranged by volunteers. Finally, the effects of these programs were improvements in relation to reading habits, reading interests, academic progress, learning vision, interpersonal relationships, etiquette, and mental health. © 2022,Journal of Educational Media and Library sciences. Mississippi Burning: An Exploration of Community Noise Levels from a Rural Mississippi Community Grappling with Wood Pellet Production Manufacturing

Wood pellets are being touted as a renewable and sustainable form of energy. As a result of this growing popularity, the global wood pellet market is expected to reach $16 billion by 2026. Currently, there are approximately 100 pellet manufacturing plants in the United States, with most of the production occurring in predominantly Black and poor communities in the rural South. At the request of residents concerned about the noise pollution emanating from wood pellet production plants in their community, we carried out a community noise exposure assessment. From August 2023 to March 2024, and working closely with a local community organization we measured a variety of noise metrics in Gloster, a wood pellet impacted city in rural Mississippi, comparing these noise pollution levels to a background community with no wood pellet industrial activity. We observed statistically significant higher levels of A-weighted, C-weighted, and Z-weighted sound in Gloster compared to Mendenhall. These differences persisted across different times of the day and days of the week. When examining the decibel levels for each of the center frequencies of the 1:3 octave band, this pattern persisted. Our preliminary findings suggest that a rural community’s soundscape can be negatively impacted by unchecked wood pellet manufacturing. We argue that the sound level differences in communities impacted by wood pellet manufacturing and those that are not, combined with the strategic placement of wood pellet plants in vulnerable communities in the rural south, may also be an environmental justice issue. © 2024, The Authors. Asymmetric impacts of the World Uncertainty Index and exchange rates on tourism using non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag models

The tourism industry is highly susceptible to global economic fluctuations and uncertainties. Understanding the asymmetric effects of macroeconomic factors on tourism demand is crucial for developing effective policies and strategies in the sector. This study examines the asymmetric impacts of the World Uncertainty Index (WUI) and exchange rates on outbound tourism demand from Thailand to five Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) destinations. We employ linear and non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) models using quarterly data from 2003Q1 to 2023Q4. The results demonstrate that the asymmetric ARDL model outperforms its linear counterpart, revealing significant non-linear dynamics in tourism demand. We find that Thai outbound tourism responds more strongly to currency depreciations in destination countries than to appreciations. This asymmetry aligns with prospect theory, suggesting that tourists are more sensitive to potential cost savings than equivalent increases. The study also shows that increases in global economic uncertainty, as measured by the WUI, have a more pronounced negative impact on tourism flows than decreases in uncertainty. These findings have important implications for policymakers and tourism stakeholders in ASEAN countries. They highlight the need for tailored strategies to capitalize on favorable exchange rate movements and mitigate the impacts of global economic uncertainty on regional tourism flows. © 2024 The Author(s)

Structural insights into the molecular mechanism of phytoplasma immunodominant membrane protein

Immunodominant membrane protein (IMP) is a prevalent membrane protein in phytoplasma and has been confirmed to be an F-actin-binding protein. However, the intricate molecular mechanisms that govern the function of IMP require further elucidation. In this study, the X-ray crystallographic structure of IMP was determined and insights into its interaction with plant actin are provided. A comparative analysis with other proteins demonstrates that IMP shares structural homology with talin rod domain-containing protein 1 (TLNRD1), which also functions as an F-actin-binding protein. Subsequent molecular-docking studies of IMP and F-actin reveal that they possess complementary surfaces, suggesting a stable interaction. The low potential energy and high confidence score of the IMP-F-actin binding model indicate stable binding. Additionally, by employing immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry, it was discovered that IMP serves as an interaction partner for the phytoplasmal effector causing phyllody 1 (PHYL1). It was then shown that both IMP and PHYL1 are highly expressed in the S2 stage of peanut witches' broom phytoplasma-infected Catharanthus roseus. The association between IMP and PHYL1 is substantiated through in vivo immunoprecipitation, an in vitro cross-linking assay and molecular-docking analysis. Collectively, these findings expand the current understanding of IMP interactions and enhance the comprehension of the interaction of IMP with plant F-actin. They also unveil a novel interaction pathway that may influence phytoplasma pathogenicity and host plant responses related to PHYL1. This discovery could pave the way for the development of new strategies to overcome phytoplasma-related plant diseases.

This study aims to model the effect of local climate on energy generation in power plants in the United States. It considers climate change as well as the ever-growing electricity demand, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. We propose an integration of AI-based and domain-specific paradigms via a hybrid approach of convolutional neural networks (CNN) & long short-term memory (LSTM) coupled with environmental models. Erstwhile studies focus mainly on specific energy sources, e.g. solar/wind power. There is a need for more comprehensive examination, e.g. temperature effects across various energy generation types at the macro level of states and micro level of power plants. This forms the major focus and novelty of our study. Fathoming the factors driving temperature-energy correlations, and assessing power plant vulnerability to changing climate patterns, are both essential to promote energy infrastructure resilience and sustainability. Our study offers novel insights into the complex interplay of temperature, energy generation, sustainability and related aspects to enable enhanced macro & micro level decision-making in energy sector. It therefore makes contributions to smart environment goals for smart cities and a smart planet.

Super-resolution algorithms aim to produce magnified high-resolution versions from low-resolution images. Some methods, however, are prone to generate blur during the process. Simple sharpening filters are adopted to alleviate this type of artifact. However, the actual effectiveness of this approach is not clear-cut in the literature. This work evaluates the effect of three simple sharpening filters on the quality of images obtained from super-resolution methods. Two metrics were considered in the evaluation: the Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) metric, and the Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS). One of the filters could consistently improve the LPIPS metric of magnified images from diverse benchmark sets on top of seven super-resolution methods. The increments obtained for the perceptual metric seem to occur due to the sharpening effect. Improvements on PSNR values were not as consistent. © 2022 SPIE.
