The Structuring Role of Rhodolith Beds on Meiobenthic Communities in the Mediterranean Sea

Rhodolith beds are globally distributed structurally complex habitats formed by the aggregation of unattached forms of non-geniculate coralline red algae. They provide key ecosystem functions and services, supporting feeding, settlement and nursery provision for several species. Despite their importance, the associated faunal biodiversity is poorly known, particularly with regard to meiofauna. The Mediterranean is particularly lacking in data;here, meiofaunal samples were collected in three sites from the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) aiming to characterize for the first time the meiofaunal communities associated with mesophotic rhodolith beds, exploring whether the microhabitat structure of rhodoliths influences variations in meiofaunal composition compared to the underlying sediment microhabitat. A total of 17 taxa was recorded. A high level of dissimilarity was found between the two different microhabitat types (i.e., rhodoliths and sediments), suggesting that meiofauna is more influenced by 'micro' than 'macro' spatial scale from both a qualitative and quantitative point of view. Rhodoliths showed a distinct meiofauna represented by copepods and many representative taxa of temporary meiofauna (macrofaunal juveniles), supporting the nursery role of rhodoliths. Conversely, sediments were mainly composed of sediment-dwelling organisms (nematodes and platyhelminthes). The presence of such a multifaceted meiobenthic community, especially in more structurally complex rhodoliths, might favour the resilience of the system and recovery processes after environmental perturbations. These findings underline the key role of rhodoliths as habitat formers and biodiversity/stability enhancers in coastal ecosystems.

The study’s aim is to consider setting research agenda for emotional AI to enhance marketing strategies, consequently to improve customer satisfaction. This study explores the integration of emotional artificial intelligence (AI) developed using data generated by neuro-physiological tracking systems in marketing and customer relationship management. Emotional AI, capable of recognizing and interpreting human emotions, offers significant opportunities for creating personalized customer experiences. The research investigates how emotional AI can enhance marketing strategies, improve customer satisfaction. It also addresses the ethical considerations and challenges associated with collecting and utilizing emotional data. By leveraging emotional AI, it is assumed brands can foster trust-based relationships and gain a competitive edge in the market. © 2024 IEEE.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediate several signaling pathways through a general mechanism that involves their activation, upholding a chain of events that lead to the release of molecules responsible for cytoplasmic action and further regulation. These physiological functions can be severely altered by mutations in GPCR genes. GPCRs subfamily A17 (dopamine, serotonin, adrenergic and trace amine receptors) are directly related with neurodegenerative diseases, and as such it is crucial to explore known mutations on these systems and their impact in structure and function. A comprehensive and detailed computational framework - MUG (Mutations Understanding GPCRs) - was constructed, illustrating key reported mutations and their effect on receptors of the subfamily A17 of GPCRs. We explored the type of mutations occurring overall and in the different families of subfamily A17, as well their localization within the receptor and potential effects on receptor functionality. The mutated residues were further analyzed considering their pathogenicity. The results reveal a high diversity of mutations in the GPCR subfamily A17 structures, drawing attention to the considerable number of mutations in conserved residues and domains. Mutated residues were typically hydrophobic residues enriched at the ligand binding pocket and known activating microdomains, which may lead to disruption of receptor function. MUG as an interactive web application is available for the management and visualization of this dataset. We expect that this interactive database helps the exploration of GPCR mutations, their influence, and their familywise and receptor-specific effects, constituting the first step in elucidating their structures and molecules at the atomic level. Induction of Ferroptotic Cell Death by Neuromelanin Pigments in Dopaminergic Cells

Neuromelanin (NM) is an iron-rich, insoluble brown or black pigment that exhibits protective properties. However, its accumulation over time may render it a source of free radicals. In Parkinson's disease, dopaminergic neurons with the highest NM levels and increased iron content are preferentially vulnerable to degeneration. Considering NM's iron binding capacity and the critical role of iron in ferroptosis, we aimed to investigate the interplay between neuromelanin and ferroptosis in dopaminergic cells. We prepared two NM pigments: iron-free NM (ifNM) and iron-containing NM (Fe3+NM) and, exposed to cells. After verifying NM accumulation, cell viability was assessed in the absence or presence of antioxidants (NAC (1 mM), Trolox (100 mu M)) and specific inhibitors of cell death types. Ferroptosis-related parameters, including lipid peroxidation byproducts (4-HNE), lipid ROS, glutathione, intracellular iron, GPX4, and ACSL4, and cellular iron metabolism-related proteins (TfR1, ferroportin, ferritin, IREB2) were evaluated following ifNM and Fe3+NM treatments, with or without Ferrostatin-1, Liproxstatin-1 and deferoxamine. Both NMs induced cell death via distinct mechanisms. Ferroptotic cell death by ifNM and Fe3+NM was reversed by ferrostatin-1 and NAC (p < 0.05). Significant alterations in lipid peroxidation, GPX4 levels, and iron metabolism were observed independent of NM's iron composition (p < 0.05). Ferritin levels increased following ifNM treatment, reflecting an adaptive response to iron overload, while Fe3+NM treatment led to ferritin depletion, possibly via ferritinophagy. Our findings reveal a distinct role of iron-rich and iron-free neuromelanin in modulating ferroptotic pathways, highlighting the potential of targeting neuromelanin-iron interactions as a therapeutic strategy to mitigate neuronal ferroptosis in Parkinson's disease.

Several scientific, technical and practical applications concerning the Italian coasts require the use of a unitary cartographic representation of the entire area. It is therefore necessary to select not only the geodetic datum itself, but also a single cartographic projection. This article aims to identify, among different possible solutions, the cartographic projection capable of guaranteeing minimal deformations. In fact, each projection introduces distortions (e.g., to distances, areas, angles between directions). In relation to the objectives pursued, a projection that limits or even nullifies the values of a specific type of deformation (for example those on areas or angles) may be preferable. It is clear that a study of the variability of distortions is useful: tools available in Geographic Information Systems (GISs) are suitable for this purpose. In this article the following representations, all conformal (i.e., without angle deformations), are considered and analysed using QGIS software: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) based on a single zone for the entire area considered, Mercator of the world, Mercator with one standard parallel, Lambert Conformal Conic with one standard parallel. The experiments demonstrate that UTM is the most suitable for the Italian coastal zones to limit both area and distance deformations preserving the shape.

Prevalence of vaccine-derived hepatitis B surface antibodies in children and adolescents in Germany: results from a population-based survey, 2014-2017

Introduction Childhood vaccination against hepatitis B has been recommended in Germany since 1995. WHO defines a primary vaccination series as successful if the initial hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) level is >= 10 IU/L directly after vaccination. Anti-HBs levels vary depending on the number of doses, type of vaccine, and time interval between the last two doses. In 2021, Germany began to recommend three instead of four doses of polyvalent hepatitis-B-containing vaccines. Our aim was to estimate the proportion of vaccinated children in Germany with anti-HBs levels < 10 IU/L, 10-99 IU/L, and >= 100 IU/L by number and type of vaccine, and assess if number of doses and compliance with recommended time interval between the last two doses are associated with an anti-HBs level >= 10 IU/L when considering type of vaccine and time since last dose. Methods We used data from a national cross-sectional study (2014-2017) of children (3-17 years). We excluded participants with unknown vaccination dates, unreadable or incomplete vaccination cards, and hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive participants. We defined a recommended schedule as a vaccination series with at least six months between the two last doses and having three doses or more. We calculated weighted anti-HBs sero-prevalence for three anti-HBs levels: < 10 IU/L, 10-99 IU/L and >= 100 IU/L. We fitted two logistic regression models to examine the relationship between number of doses and recommended schedule on anti-HBs levels (>= 10 IU/L and >= 100 IU/L) considering time since last dose and type of vaccine (Infanrix, Hexavac, Monovalent). Results We included 2,489 participants. The weighted proportion of vaccinated children per anti-HBs level was < 10 IU/L: 36.3% [95%CI 34.0-38.7%], 10-99 IU/L: 35.7% [33.2-38.2%] and >= 100 IU/L: 28.0% [25.9-30.2%]. Melancholia Scytharum: the early modern psychiatry of transgender identification

Herodotus's enigmatic Scythian theleia nousos/morbus femininus and its Hippocratic interpretation interested many early modern authors. Its seeming dimension of transgender identification invited various medico-psychological and psychiatric reflections, culminating in nosologist de Sauvages' tentative 1731 term, melancholia Scytharum. This article identifies pertinent discussions and what turn out to have been entangled, tentative psychologizations in late-seventeenth through mid-nineteenth-century mental medicine: of 'effeminacy of manners' (mollities animi such as observed in London's Beaux and mollies) and male homosexuality (amour antiphysique/grec);of the mental masculinity of some women (viragines, Amazones);of ubiquitous attributions of impotence to sorcery (anaphrodisia magica);and lastly, of transfeminine persons encountered throughout the New World and increasingly beyond.

Coastline Automatic Extraction from Medium-Resolution Satellite Images Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-Based Approach

In recent decades several methods have been developed to extract coastlines from remotely sensed images. In fact, this is one of the principal fields of remote sensing research that continues to receive attention, as testified by the thousands of scientific articles present in the main databases, such as SCOPUS, WoS, etc. The main issue is to automatize the whole process or at least a great part of it, so as to minimize the human error connected to photointerpretation and identification of training sites to support the classification of objects (basically soil and water) present in the observed scene. This article proposes a new fully automatic methodological approach for coastline extraction: it is based on the unsupervised classification of the most decorrelated fictitious band derived from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) applied to the satellite images. The experiments are carried out on datasets characterized by images with different geometric resolution, i.e., Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager (OLI) multispectral images (pixel size: 30 m), a Sentinel-2 dataset including blue, green, red and Near Infrared (NIR) bands (pixel size: 10 m) and a Sentinel-2 dataset including red edge, narrow NIR and Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) bands (pixel size: 20 m). The results are very encouraging, given that the comparison between each extracted coastline and the corresponding real one generates, in all cases, residues that present a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) lower than the pixel size of the considered dataset. In addition, the PCA results are better than those achieved with Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Modified NDWI (MNDWI) applications.

"I Put a Wall Between Me and My Emotions, but That Wall Was Coming Towards Me": A Descriptive Qualitative Study on Determining Emotion Regulation Experiences of Oncology Nurses

Aims: The intense emotional nature of cancer care makes it crucial for oncology nurses to effectively regulate their emotions, as this impacts their mental health, quality of care, empathy challenges, burnout, and workforce retention. The aim of this study is to determine oncology nurses' experiences with emotion regulation during patient care and how these experiences affect their well-being and the quality of patient care. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study used a sample of 28 oncology nurses from various units, collected data through in-depth semistructured interviews, and analyzed it using content analysis. Results: Emotion regulation challenges encompass situations related to perspective and skills, patient-related conditions, and work-related issues. Emotional responses differ between the first and later years in the profession. Methods used include avoidance, alleviating the emotional burden, and cognitive restructuring, while needs involve gaining awareness and skills to regulate emotions and improving working conditions. Conclusions: This study provides insight into how oncology nurses regulate their emotions during patient care and discusses the positive and negative effects of the emotion regulation strategies used on their mental health. Nursing professionals who struggle with emotion regulation during their early years in the profession describe experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue in the later stages of their careers. Beginning nurses are inexperienced with challenging emotions. They should be trained to regulate their emotions. Implications for Practice: Oncology nurses struggle with regulating their emotions during patient care, which leads to mental health issues and burnout over time. Therefore, it is important to develop effective emotion regulation skills. A Home-Care Service for Frail Older Adults: Findings from a Quasi-Experiment in Milan

Population aging is particularly pronounced in Italy. Recently, home-care services emerged as one of the desirable strategy when dealing with such situations of fragility. In this framework, we present the evaluation of a home-care service which was experimentally implemented by Fondazione Sacra Famiglia and Casa di Cura Ambrosiana in the 2017-2018 biennium. The service consisted of a twice-weekly nursing visit intended to monitor patient health conditions and to gather data constantly supervised by a geriatrician. The eligible population consisted of the users of San Carlo Hospital Emergency Department (91 individuals). Twenty of these individuals had access to the experimental home-care service. The results show the smaller probability of mortality for the treatment group compared to the control group, but similar probabilities in admissions to ER and in hospitalizations. These findings suggest that health home-care policies could reduce mortality by lessening the negative effects of relational isolation.
