This paper presents robust control of Electro-Hydraulic Servo System. Higher order sliding mode controllers are examined using standard Super-Twisting Algorithm (STA) and Generalized Super-Twisting Algorithm (GSTA). A novel sliding surface is considered. The control is synthesized using STA and GSTA. Methods are demonstrated in simulations. A comprehensive comparison is presented.

Even students who are provided with currently best available education in Science, Technology, engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (STEM-C) fields are having problems coping with living in the modern world where technological advancements happen on a daily basis, let alone students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In a world where institutions offering formal education have to collaborate with individuals and groups of people interested in providing informal education, it is of a vital importance to set up good examples and share them with communities that are less experienced. In this paper we present how student Research Development Center's (SRDC) best practices of establishing a pre-college pipeline for young economically disadvantage minority students, who are interested in STEM-C fields, from Puerto Rico are being transferred to Universidad Catolica de Nicaragua (UNICA). The goal of the paper is to show how we developed a partnership between Puerto Rico and Nicaragua, and used lessons learned in Puerto Rico to involve undergraduate and pre-college students from Nicaragua in research program using project based learning in STEM-C fields.

In this paper, Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control algorithms are proposed to compensate for a bias type sensor fault applied on the quadrotor vehicle. A novel output estimator design called intelligent Output-Estimator (iOE) is introduced to detect and isolate the sensor fault. The estimation of the fault magnitude is done through a proposed structured algorithm that senses the maximum error deviation between the output estimation and the measured outputs. Then the fault compensation is achieved by regenerating the desired path. Real-flight results validated the proposed algorithms and showed the sensor fault accommodation process.

State and Disturbance Estimation using Higher Order Sliding Modes for Seeker System

A seeker system is the target detection mechanism of a missile. It consists of a two axis gimbal system with an optical sensing device as pay load. The estimation approach is required for the angular position and displacement rates of the seeker pitch and yaw gimbals. The performance of seeker is affected by cross coupling between the two gimbals and the external disturbance. This paper presents estimation of the lumped disturbance term in each channel using higher order sliding modes (HOSM). The lumped disturbance is considered as additional state to formulate extended state system. HOSM Estimator is designed for the extended state system. The effectiveness of the method is validated in simulations. The advantage of HOSM observer over Sliding Mode Observer (SMO) with respect to instability for increased initial conditions is validated in simulation.

In this paper, a novel observer design is introduced to estimate the outputs of a Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) system. From the synthesis of state observer and Model-Free technique, the Model-Free Observer (MFO) is proposed to compensate for the un-modeled dynamics, modeling errors, and the system uncertainties. The developed output estimation technique using MFO is validated using real flights of a quadrotor UAV. Two flight-test missions are conducted to validate the proposed observer performance, in the fault free case as well as in the presence of actuator faults.

In this work, the DC measurements and AC measurements (impedance spectra) have been used to characterize the mono crystalline silicon solar cell (MSiSC). From the I-V characteristics under dark conditions for different temperatures (298-353K°) and by using the ARREHENIUS diagrams defined by Ln(I)=f(1/T)ǀ v=const , we have obtained the barrier height Ψ (eV), ideal factor A, and the reverse saturation current I 0 (A); using the double exponential model. The AC measurement impedance [X(ω)=f(R(ω))] has been employed to measure the parameters of the MSiSC such as: heterogeneity factor, β, DC resistance R dc , the bulk resistance R b , activation energy E (eV), donor density N d (cm -3 ) and density states N s (cm -2 ). The solar cell was exposed to thermal stress within the range (298-353K°), the diagram of complex impedance in the dark, was obtained. This plot give a semicircles arcs, their centers lie below the real axis R(ω), corresponding to the appearance of the depression angle (θ≠0) which allows to measure the heterogeneity factor, β (β=2θ/π) which is in good agreement with the Cole-Cole diagram. It is noted that, β, increases with temperature. The intersection of the circle arcs from the right with x axis (i.e. at very low frequency) gives R dc , while the intersection from the left gives R b , of the sample (i.e. at very high frequency). By using ARREHENIUS diagrams defined by Ln(c)=f(1/T) and Ln(f)=f(1/T), we have obtained the parameters E (eV), N d (cm -3 ), and Ns (cm -2 ).

The main objective of this work is to study, characterize finely the defects created in photovoltaic cells made from mono crystalline silicon wafer based on semiconductor has continued its operation under extreme conditions (electrical stress). We will demonstrate the effect of reverse stress current injected in solar cell structure on the I-V and C-V characteristics under dark conditions at room temperature for several time periods. These experimental measurements were numerical analyzed using double exponential model. Experimental evidence showed that different levels of reverse currents are confirmed to be a major degrading factor affecting the performance, efficiency, and power of solar modules. The experimental results were consistent with computational predictions.
