This paper demonstrates a approach to design the field programmable CMOS operational transresistance amplifier. All the MOSFETs are replaced by the floating gate MOSFETs to make the OTRA design programmable. The charge at the floating gate can be programmed after fabrication, based on Hot-e-injection and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling techniques. This programming charge at floating gate results in threshold voltage variation in these MOSFETs, which in turn can modify circuit's specifications. The high frequency small signal analysis of the design is prepared and specifications of the design are rederived in terms of threshold voltages of the MOSFETs. The expressions of output voltage, transresistance, input impedance, output impedance and offsets are derived in terms of threshold voltages of respective MOSFETs. In order to achieve circuits AC and DC characteristics, the circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-spice 0.35um CMOS process. The simulated results shows 13 bit programming precision in transresistance, input impedance, output impedance, Temperature stability and dc offsets with respect to threshold voltage of respective MOSFETs.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 – Udemy, Coursera and edX – vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all. The potential is strong, and data shows promising registration figures from India and economically developing countries. Yet MOOCs fall short of their goal of widespread and readily accessed education, impeded by technology challenges, lack of basic education and predominance of English as the language of instruction. Maintaining a high standard of educational quality is challenging, and attrition rates are very high. Those in library and information science can facilitate learning through MOOCs and also benefit by using the platform to build awareness of the professional field.

Even presenting risk of falls or mobility difficulties, many seniors prefer to live independently as long as possible. Thus, there is a need for solutions to enable independent living safely and to strengthen family support. Among them are the collection devices that assist in monitoring and quality of life of seniors. This paper aims to conduct a survey of devices developed to capture signal monitoring and mobility aid for the elderly. The devices were grouped into a main category (sensors) followed by secondary categories in relation to the type of use of the sensors (aid device with sensors, robotics and smart homes). Data were analyzed descriptively, listing the products with the types of use. The study raised a total of 22 products. It is observed that most of the feedback systems is to use sensor systems alone, without being used in sets with other technologies like assistive devices or robotics. Most of the technologies has been developed for detecting falls, and fewer tasks are transfer and mobility in the community. We emphasize the importance of unity of catchment systems signals with assistive technologies, in addition to monitoring the elderly provide direct aid in performing the task performed.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been established as a modeling organism in biomedical research for several decades. Its hermaphrodite germ line encompasses key developmental concepts like stem cell differentiation and apoptosis;therefore it provides a good model system for these basic concepts. Here, we have extended and refined our previous computational model, which encompasses developmental landmarks and the resulting movement of germ cells along the gonadal tube. We have used the molecular dynamics (MD) framework to model the physical movement of cells due to the force arising from cell divisions. The model simulation was calibrated with experimental time and it is in accordance with experimental observations. In addition, the model provides means for testing hypotheses regarding the behaviour of mutated germ lines and the potential mechanisms causing physiological apoptosis, which are difficult to assess experimentally. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this study, we focused on the interoperability and authentication of medical devices in the context of telemedical systems. A recent standard called the ISO/IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device (X73-phd) Standards addresses the device interoperability problem by defining common protocols for agent (medical device) and manager (appliance) interface. The X73-phd standard however has not addressed security and authentication of medical devices which is important in establishing integrity of a telemedical system. We have designed and implemented a security policy within the X73-phd standards. The policy will enable device authentication using Asymmetric-Key Cryptography and the RSA algorithm as the digital signature scheme. We used two approaches for performing the digital signatures: direct software implementation and use of embedded security modules (ESM). The two approaches were evaluated and compared in terms of execution time and memory requirement. For the standard 2048-bit RSA, ESM calculates digital signatures only 12% of the total time for the direct implementation. Moreover, analysis shows that ESM offers more security advantage such as secure storage of keys compared to using direct implementation. Interoperability with other systems was verified by testing the system with LNI Healthlink, a manager software that implements the X73-phd standard. Lastly, security analysis was done and the system's response to common attacks on authentication systems was analyzed and several measures were implemented to protect the system against them.

Identifying transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) is crucial for understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. It is known that transcription factors (TFs) often cooperate to regulate genes. While traditional approaches can be used to discover binding motifs of a group of co-regulated genes, they often fail to accurately assign motifs to the corresponding TFs. Here, we consider two TFs together to infer their TFBSs and their synergistic relationship simultaneously. The basic idea is that if two TFs interact, their TFBSs, if distinct, would be conserved across species and coincided in the promoter regions of the genes they co-regulated. Applying our method to Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromatin immunoprecipitation data, we predicted 110 TF pairs with statistically significant motif assignments. A majority of these TF pairs have literature support to be synergistic, and the designated motifs to TFs match well with their known consensus. We further examined the synergism of predicted TF pairs in seven experimental conditions using ANOVA, and identified significant interactions. © 2011 IEEE.

By endowing technology with the attributes of autonomous agency, human beings are ethically sidelined. Individuals are relieved of responsibility. The suggestion of being in the grip of irresistible forces provides an excuse for rejecting responsibility for oneself and others, thus creating conditions for inappropriate or antisocial behavior. It also impedes the search for solutions to pressing social problems associated with applications of technology. Failure to assign and accept responsibility for decisions to deploy "conventional" technology will inevitably impede our ability to deal with the social and ethical challenges of robotics. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2007.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a form of update based on the minimization of the geodesic distance on a graph. We provide a characterization of this class using set-theoretic operators and show that such operators bijectively correspond to geodesic metrics. As distance is generated by distinguishability, our framework is appropriate in contexts where distance is generated by threshold, and therefore, when measurement is erroneous. We describe in this paper a new method for response integration in ensemble neural networks with Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy Logic using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) for optimization. In this paper we consider pattern recognition with ensemble neural networks for the case of fingerprints. An ensemble neural network of three modules is used. Each module is a local expert on person recognition based on its biometric measure (Pattern recognition for fingerprints). The Response Integration method of the ensemble neural networks has the goal of combining the responses of the modules to improve the recognition rate of the individual modules. Using GAs to optimize the fuzzy rules of The Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy System we can improve the results of the response integration. We show in this paper a comparative study of the results of a type-2 approach for response integration that improves performance over the type-1 fuzzy logic approaches.
