Investigation of transient cavitating flow in viscoelastic pipes

A study on water hammer in viscoelastic pipes when the fluid pressure drops to liquid vapour pressure is performed. Two important concepts including column separation and the effects of retarded strains in the pipe wall on the fluid response have been investigated separately in recent works, but there is some curiosity as to how the results for pressure and discharge are when column separation occurs in a viscoelastic pipe. For pipes made of plastic such as polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), viscoelasticity is a crucial mechanical property which changes the hydraulic and structural transient responses. Based on previous developments in the analysis of water hammer, a model which is capable of analysing column separation in viscoelastic pipes is presented and used for solving the selected case studies. For the column-separation modelling the Discrete Vapour Cavity Model (DVCM) is utilised and the viscoelasticity property of the pipe wall is modelled by Kelvin-Voigt elements. The effects of viscoelasticity play an important role in the column separation phenomenon because it changes the water hammer fundamental frequency and so affects the time of opening or collapse of the cavities. Verification of the implemented computer code is performed for the effects of viscoelasticity and column separation – separately and simultaneously – using experimental results from the literature. In the provided examples the focus is placed on the simultaneous effect of viscoelasticity and column separation on the hydraulic transient response. The final conclusions drawn are that if rectangular grids are utilised the DVCM gives acceptable predictions of the phenomenon and that the pipe wall material's retarded behaviour strongly dampens the pressure spikes caused by column separation.

We describe in this paper a new method for response integration in ensemble neural networks with Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy Logic using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) for optimization. In this paper we consider pattern recognition with ensemble neural networks for the case of fingerprints. An ensemble neural network of three modules is used. Each module is a local expert on person recognition based on its biometric measure (Pattern recognition for fingerprints). The Response Integration method of the ensemble neural networks has the goal of combining the responses of the modules to improve the recognition rate of the individual modules. Using GAs to optimize the fuzzy rules of The Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy System we can improve the results of the response integration. We show in this paper a comparative study of the results of a type-2 approach for response integration that improves performance over the type-1 fuzzy logic approaches.

The assessment of vibration levels that cause damage to canvas paintings travelling on loan has been hampered by the lack of direct measurements of the dimensional change of the canvas. The application of triangulation laser displacement sensors in this study has allowed direct, continuousin situmonitoring of the vibration of canvas during packing, handling and transporting by road of three nineteenth-century oil paintings from the collection of the National Museum in Cracow, Poland. The measurements showed various levels of vibration primarily influenced by the packing method: paintings wrapped in tissue and transported in soft cardboard boxes were better cushioned from the vibration than a painting rigidly fixed in a wooden case. However, increased levels of vibration were always measured during packing the paintings and transferring the cases or boxes to and from the road vehicle, which emphasizes the need to train staff to handle the paintings with care when they are still in the museum. The strains induced by the vibration levels recorded were much lower than the critical levels of tolerable strain for the nineteenth-century canvas paintings quoted in the conservation literature. Therefore the paintings are unlikely to be endangered by fracture or fatigue damage under the transportation conditions monitored

Time series forecasting has been widely used to support decision making, in this context a highly accurate prediction is essential to ensure the quality of the decisions. Ensembles of machines currently receive a lot of attention; they combine predictions from different forecasting methods as a procedure to improve the accuracy. This paper explores genetic programming and boosting technique to obtain an ensemble of regressors and proposes a new formula for the final hypothesis. This new formula is based on the correlation coefficient instead of the geometric median used by the boosting algorithm. To validate this method, experiments were performed, the mean squared error (MSE) has been used to compare the accuracy of the proposed method against the results obtained by GP, GP using a boosting technique and the traditional statistical methodology (ARMA). The results show advantages in the use of the proposed approach

A system has been developed for providing automated assessment in CS1. During the academic year 2004- 2005 this system was evaluated empirically by examining a sample group of students using both the traditional assessment methods and also the automated techniques, four times during the year. A significant correlation was found between the performance in both tests, however the correlation was only strong for students who performed well during the *** further this study, students were interviewed and asked their opinion on the generated questions. The students offered reasons for the variation in their performance and provided an insight into where the discrepancies lie. We discovered that weaker students were employing rote-learning and using it to score marks in the class *** this survey was conducted on paper, a large amount of student roughwork ("doodles") was collected, the analysis of this roughwork is also discussed.

Advances in information technology now provide a variety of digital tools for the mathematical investigation of the visual complexity of textile patterns and decorative designs. In this article, we report on innovative applications of this technology to the geometric analysis of Kuba cloth and Zillij mosaics. From our perspective, these objects present distinctly different analytical challenges, and typify problematic aspects of the classification and generation problems of artistic design. Mathematical considerations led us to use neural networks, shape grammars, and related technologies to approach these problems. Our ultimate goal is to use our methods, samples, and peripherals to build an interactive database for the study of historical patterns and the generation of contemporary designs. There have been numerous attempts recently to promote technology based education (Shrestha, 1997) in the poorer third world countries, but so far all these have not provided a sustainable solution as they are either centered and controlled from abroad and relying solely on foreign donors for their sustenance or they are not web based, which make distribution problematic, and some are not affordable by most of the local population in these places. In this paper we discuss an application, the Local College Learning Management System (LoColms), which we are developing, that is both sustainable and economical to suit the situation in these countries. The application is a web based system, and aims at improving the traditional form of education by empowering the local universities. Its economicability comes from the fact that it is supported by traditional communication technology, the public switching telephone network system, PSTN, which eliminates the need for packet switched or dedicated private virtual networks (PVN) usually required in similar situations. At a later stage, we shall incorporate ontology and paging tools to improve resource sharability and storage optimization in the Proxy Caches (ProCa) and LoColms servers. The system is based on the client/server paradigm and its infrastructure consists of the PSTN, ProCa, with the learning centers accessing the universities by means of point to point protocol (PPP).

Fuzzy System and CMAC Network with B-Spline Membership/Basis Functions can Approximate A Smooth Function and its Derivatives

In control and other modeling applications, fuzzy system with B-spline membership functions and CMAC neural network with B-spline basis functions are sometimes desired to approximate not only the assigned smooth function as well as its derivatives. In this paper, by designing the fuzzy system and CMAC neural network with B-spline basis functions, we prove that such a fuzzy system and CMAC can universally approximate a smooth function and its derivatives, that is to say, for a given accuracy, we can approximate an arbitrary smooth function by such fuzzy system and CMAC that not only the function is approximated within this accuracy, but its derivatives are approximated as well. The conclusions here provide solid theoretical foundation for their extensive applications.
