Experimental study on sintered powder wick loop heat pipe

Increased of heat flux generated by electronic equipment in particular components of a computer (CPU) should always be accompanied with a good cooling in order to achieve optimal operating capability with a high level of reliability. The use of loop heat pipes in thermal management of electronic cooling becomes one of alternative solution. Before LHPs are implemented as an alternative cooling method for electronic device, a quantity of reliability factors should be considered and evaluated such as wick structure and material, type of working fluid, long term life tests, and other tests. The purposes of this experimental study are to examine and analyze the application of sintered copper powder as a wick on a loop heat pipe, type of cooling system on LHP and the orientation of LHP. The performace of nanofluid as working fluid in loop heat pipe were also investigated in this experiment. The performance of the loop heat pipe was also affected by the type of condenser; the water cooled loop heat pipe has the highest temperature reducing value compared to the heat sink fan. The orientation of loop heat pipe also affected the performance of loop heat pipe. This proved that gravity and capillary pressure affecting the performance of loop heat pipes. Temperature differences between the evaporator and condenser sections with nanofluids were less that pure water, i.e. thermal resistance of the LHP when charged with nanofluids was less. It makes nanofluid attractive as working fluid in loop heat pipe technology.

Subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) often have trouble with ambulation. Some research has shown that aux- iliary cueing in the form of vision, audio, or vibration can improve the gait of PD patients. We have developed a new vibratory feedback shoe, known as the PDShoe, which builds on existing research. This device can modulate both frequency and amplitude of feedback for the wearer. It is untethered, and thus can be worn during daily activities. Pressure and tactor status data are transmitted wirelessly over a personal area network to a notebook computer. This computer can also control the tactor actuation and stimulation frequency. This paper describes the details of design and construction of the PDShoe. A preliminary evaluation with four Parkinson's disease subjects and two healthy subjects is included to show the usability of the device.

Decision support models for coordinating sustainable product and supply chain (SC) design can help a company identify the best product designs that will bring highest sustainability benefits to the entire SC at the product development stage. This paper presents a multi-stage decision support model (developed using a hierarchical approach) that evaluates alternate product designs and their SC configurations to identify the best product design and their closed-loop SC configuration that maximizes profit and also minimize adverse environmental and societal impacts. The model considers a total life-cycle approach and promotes closed-loop flow over multiple product life-cycles. Particularly, this paper provides a detailed description of the mixed integer linear programming model developed to evaluate the impact of alternate product design on their corresponding SC configuration to identify for each design an optimal closed-loop SC configuration that maximizes the profit. The application of the model to an example problem is presented. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper a new approach for the null-space impedance control of a kinematically redundant robot is proposed. The approach is useful for the case where the robot experience an external interaction on the body, especially in the presence of humans. The proposed algorithm guarantees safe and dependable physical interaction of the robot body with the environment, thanks to the null-space impedance control. At the same time, the correct execution of the task assigned to the end effector is ensured by a disturbance observer. The algorithm does not require joint torque measurements. The performance of the proposed controller is verified through simulations on 7R KUKA lightweight robot arm.

This article presents the development of L 1 adaptive-control theory and its application to safety critical flight control system (FCS) development. Several architectures of the theory and benchmark examples are analyzed. The key feature of L 1 adaptive-control architectures is the decoupling of estimation and control, which enables the use of arbitrarily fast estimation rates without sacrificing robustness. Rohrs's example and the two-cart system are used as benchmark problems for illustration. NASA's flight tests on subscale commercial jet verify the theoretical claims in a set of safety-critical test flights.

The NSF ADVANCE program represents one of the most far reaching gender equity efforts implemented jointly by a government agency and institutions of higher education. Focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, in 2001, an inaugural group of universities received NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation (IT) awards to increase the representation of women faculty in science and engineering. To date, a total of five cohorts of 44 institutions of higher education have received the award, and the 19 institutions comprising the 2001 and 2003 cohorts have completed their five-year projects. In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of recruitment programs and practices developed by Cohort 1 ADVANCE institutions in an effort to increase the representation of women faculty. Towards this end, we focus on changes in the number of women faculty at the assistant professor rank in colleges of engineering at seven Cohort 1 ADVANCE institutions. We examine performance during both the 2001-2006 grant period, and the sustained impact of ADVANCE by examining the trajectory of colleges of engineering up through the three years following receipt of the grant (2006-2009). Using these changes as an indicator of the effectiveness of recruitment programs, we determine which colleges of engineering associated with Cohort 1 universities show stronger performance. Subsequently, we compare the key components of recruitment programs initiated at both stronger and weaker performing institutions during the ADVANCE grant period. Our analysis of changes during the grant period reveals that four out of seven colleges of engineering added between four and seven women to the faculty at the assistant professor rank, and two institutions added one female assistant professor each. Georgia Tech's College of engineering, where the number of female assistant professors fell by four, constitutes an exception to this overall trend. A longer term view (2001-2009) reveals

Investigation of Aluminum‐Copper Tube Hydroforming with Axial Feeding

Hydroforming of a two‐layered Aluminum‐Copper tube is investigated numerically and experimentally. Pressure is applied through a nonlinear path along with symmetrical axial feeding. ABAQUS/Explicit commercial code is used for finite element simulation of the process. ASTM C11000 Copper alloy is used as inner layer and ASTM AA1050A Aluminum alloy is used as outer layer. The simulation results show that the part can be successfully formed under internal pressure of 40 MPa with 8 mm axial displacement. Stress distributions on both inner and outer tubes are compared and maximum thinning on their wall is also discussed. Different friction conditions are applied on the process using different coefficients of friction and their effects are investigated on thinning percentage of inner and outer tubes and also on axial feeding. It is observed that finite element results are in good agreement with experimental results.

The success of organizations operating in complex environments depends on how well its supply chain could adapt to disruptions caused by unanticipated events. Building this resilience requires the capability to identify risks and uncertainties and modeling the impact of them on operations. Both of these have proven to be very difficult to do effectively. With the emerging interest in promoting sustainability companies are now forced to not only consider factors that affect economic performance but also those relating to environmental and societal responsibilities. Thus, increasing resilience in sustainable supply chains (SSCs) calls for a more holistic approach to address risk;it is necessary to consider the risks originating within and outside the company and those affecting all supply chain partners;also, the risks due to and impacting all stakeholder groups must be incorporated. This paper presents a comprehensive review of risks in SSCs and a potential approach to model their impact. © 2010 IEEE.
