IMPROVED CONTINUATION METHOD CONTROLLER FOR PWM SYSTEMS: AN EXPERIMENTAL CASE STUDY

Masaki Yamakita received Be ME and PhD from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1984 1986 and 1989 respectively. From 1989 he was a Research Associate in the Department of Control Engineering of Tokyo Institute of Technology and from 1993 he was a Lecturer at Tokyohashi University of Technology. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Control and Systems Engineering of Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research interests include robotics learning control robust control and non-linear control. Katsuhisa Furuta was born in Tokyo Japan in 1940. He received his B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1962 1964 and 1967 respectively. Since 1967 he has been a teaching staff of Tokyo Institute of Technology where he is currently a Professor of Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering. He is a fellow of IEEE and SICE. He is now a member of Science Council of Japan the secretary of the engineering division a council member of IFAC and the President of SICE in 1999.

In this paper, an improved version of online continuation method controller for PWM systems is presented. The online continuation method controller solves the PWM-type deadbeat control problem numerically. By using this algorithm, iterations for solving the set of nonlinear equations always start from a good solution candidate and therefore it can be used online. The original continuation method is modified so that it is applicable to real systems. The validity of the proposed control method is demonstrated by a laboratory-scale flexible arm manipulator.

Erosion of hydro turbine components through sand laden river is one of the biggest problems in Himalayas. Even with sediment trapping systems, complete removal of fine sediment from water is impossible and uneconomical;hence most of the turbine components in Himalayan Rivers are exposed to sand laden water and subject to erode. Pelton bucket which are being wildly used in different hydropower generation plant undergoes erosion on the continuous presence of sand particles in water. The subsequent erosion causes increase in splitter thickness, which is supposed to be theoretically zero. This increase in splitter thickness gives rise to back hitting of water followed by decrease in turbine efficiency. This paper describes the process of measurement of sharp edges like bucket tip using digital image processing. Image of each bucket is captured and allowed to run for 72 hours;sand concentration in water hitting the bucket is closely controlled and monitored. Later, the image of the test bucket is taken in the same condition. The process is repeated for 10 times. In this paper digital image processing which encompasses processes that performs image enhancement in both spatial and frequency domain. In addition, the processes that extract attributes from images, up to and including the measurement of splitter’s tip. Processing of image has been done in MATLAB 6.5 platform. The result shows that quantitative measurement of edge erosion of sharp edges could accurately be detected and the erosion profile could be generated using image processing technique.

This paper has given an intelligent approach to avoid centerless grinding process instabilities without the need for sensors. The model-based algorithm techniques detect the configurations and the conditions of the process under which instabilities appear. The models and techniques developed have proven very useful for defining the optimum configuration of the process.

The present paper is oriented at the definition of a series of validation test cases for the far-field subsonic formulation of Farassat in the time domain, solving the Lighthill analogy for aeroacoustics in the Ffowcs William-Hawkings formulation for far-field noise predictions. The focus will be on the definition, validation and verification of four test cases for far-field acoustic propagation. The test cases are: (i) a rotating rotor with a pre-defined body force, (ii) a translating and rotating small disk case with a moving observer, (iii) a conventional helicopter rotor case, (iv) and the consistency test known as the Isom thickness noise. The acoustic pressure signature, sound pressure level and directivity have been calculated for each test case. Graphical outputs and comparisons of results with those of analytical solutions are presented.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a hexapod robot that uses shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators. The design of the robot follows a bio-mimetic approach. This paper first discusses various gaits for six-legged motion. The paper then introduces the characteristics of the SMA actuator and the corresponding driver design. The robot motion controller is implemented with an ARM9 based embedded system. Finally, the test results are presented and the robot performance is discussed.

Many Swedish health care organizations have during the last decade started implementing the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a systematic way of following‐up and analyzing their activities. However, the knowledge of its use and contribution in a health care context is insufficient. Based on a multiple case study the authors explore the use of the BSC in the Swedish health care services. The authors conclude that the concept in a health care context is used as a quality management tool that make new demands on management. In addition, the authors bring out important factors for a long‐term use of the BSC.

The security performance of mobile agent system has an important influence on the real applications. This paper gives a new idea of "enough security" fitting to real application, proposes an integrated security architecture based on component technology, comes up with a security performance evaluation framework, defines a set of metrics and offers a method to realize the measurement and evaluation of security level of mobile agent platform. The main intention of this work is to provide a scaleable security environment and a chosen security grade for mobile agents in real applications according to their real and different security requirements

In this paper we present a methodology to drive the end effector of a robotic manipulator, to which is attached a human hand, in order to follow the human's intention of movement. This set-up is inspired from a neuro-robotics scenario in order to develop systems for restoring motor functionalities in injured and disabled people. Three typical tasks are considered, namely the robot not to interfere with the human's motion, to assist a person with limited motion capabilities, and finally to be used from the subjects for rehabilitation reasons. The proposed controllers utilize a force control in two different ways, with inner position loop and with inner velocity loop. The derived controllers attempt to incorporate neuro-scientific models results. Also, stability and robust analysis is presented. The properties of the proposed methodology are verified through non-trivial computer simulations

The research in market segmentation includes two main parts. We first focus on discussing the market segmentation problem by applying clustering technique in data mining discipline. The partition of market is based on users' preference data and not on the commonly used one, users' attribute data. In that way, the definition of distance between two customers by their preference to a set of specified competing products is given. In stead of starting from scratch, the self-organization feature map is adopted as a basic clustering framework. In order to process the preference data, some necessary modifications are made. Both theoretic analysis and practical experiment are presented in this paper, which make us confident of that the algorithm we proposed has excellent performance and could discover the potential clustering patterns in the complex datasets. The second part is focus on displaying market segmentation structure. We apply visualization technique to representing the market structure clearly in a two dimensional plane so that the marketers can make their market strategies easier. The two main parts are organized as an integrated approach. Such an approach includes three core steps: preference data collecting step, preference data clustering step by SOM neural networks and visualization step by ideal point model. There are three main advantages of the approach: firstly, the approach is based on well-defined mathematic models and can be supported by a series of numeral methods. Secondly, it does not have to face the tough market variable selection problem because we focus on preference data, not on evaluators' attribute data (demographic or geographic data etc.). Finally, the approach can produce multi-scale view of market segmentation results. The experiments show that the approach yields meaningful results and is comparable and complemented to the most general ones.

Based on the theory of dynamic enterprise model （DEM）, this paper focuses on describing the technic realization methods of DEM and its application in flexible enterprise resource plan （ERP） system. The complete and systematical description of various business activities in enterprises, quick response to business changes and the demanding adjustments are achieved with the conformation of the dynamic enterprise model platform and the utilization of the dynamic enterprise system model. Mass customization production is truly used in the implementation and development of ERP software.
