This paper presents a method of navigating a surgical robot beyond the resolution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by using a resolution enhancement technique enabled by high-precision piezoelectric actuation. The surgical robot was specifically designed for injecting stem cells into the spinal cord. This particular therapy can be performed in a shorter time by using a MRI-compatible robotic platform than by using a manual needle positioning platform. Imaging resolution of fiducial markers attached to the needle guide tubing was enhanced by reconstructing a high-resolution image from multiple images with sub-pixel movements of the robot. The parallel-plane direct-drive needle positioning mechanism positioned the needle guide with a high spatial precision that is two orders of magnitude higher than typical MRI resolution up to 1 mm. Reconstructed resolution enhanced images were used to navigate the robot precisely that would not have been possible by using standard MRI. Influence of laser power and welding speed on dendrite structure growth of low power pulsed laser welded super alloy

The influence of different welding parameters like welding speed and laser power on microstructure and the mechanical properties of low power pulsed Nd: Yag laser welded Nickel based super alloy inconel 617 sheets of thickness 1.5 mm has been investigated. In the present study, the welding of the specimens was done in a single pass aimed to full depth penetration. The microstructure of the various samples at fusion zone and at heat affected zone was characterized by field effect scanning electron microscope (FESEM) while the weld size of the welded metal at different parameters were measured using optical microscope (OM). The microhardness in the various zones for the welded sample has also been investigated. The microhardness of the welded samples was compared with base metal after experimental observations. The XRD technique was used to analyze the crystallography of the material at (2θ degree). The material has been used for the present study because of its exceptional properties of heat resistant and corrosion resistant. The Nd: YAG pulsed laser has been used because of its overlapping factor during welding that reduces porosity in the weld zone.

A marine propeller as a hydrokinetic turbine – CFD analysis of energy characteristics

It is sometimes economically unreasonable to develop specific turbines, but rather to use a well-known concept of a pump in the turbine mode – PAT (Pump As Turbine). Inspired by PAT, the scope of this paper covers the assessments of the possibility to use marine propellers as runners for the hydrokinetic turbines. Numerical analyses are conducted for selected propeller geometry with the aim of evaluating its energy characteristics in the turbine regime. The chosen propeller belongs to the conventional, thoroughly experimentally tested, Wageningen B-screw series. The experimental data were used for validation of the numerical results in propeller regimes. Based on the obtained results, the researched non-optimized turbine in its optimum regime achieves a satisfactory power coefficient which is close to the value of other types of contemporary hydrokinetic turbines efficiencies.

Anti fouling coating characterization with purified Zirconia from West Kalimantan Zircon Sand for Boiler application

Zircon sand is a mineral material for zirconia purification which can be found in Indonesia. Zirconia has various functions, one of the function applied at Boiler high temperatures. The low coefficient of zircon thermal expansion indicates high thermal shock and spalling resistance. In this study, zirconia comes from Kalimantan zircon sand was applied to an anti-fouling coating. The purified zirconia is compared with zircon sand and synthetic zirconia. The purified zirconia yields a 82.48% Zr content, compared to the zircon sand has 70.85% Zr content and 89.43% in synthetic zirconia. The substrate used for coating is ferritic steel. The coating method uses a brush coating then sintered at a temperature of 400°C and 800°C. Coatings that contained purified zirconia have a rougher surface compared to coatings that contained zircon sand and synthetic zirconia. It is because the zirconia powder granules produced have a larger size. The microstructure also shows the surface of the coating with zirconia from the purification has a tenuous structure with large granules. It shows further treatment is needed in the purification of zirconia so that the grain size is homogeneous when applied to the coating.

The presented a groundbreaking and economical approach to enhancing the sustainability of residential buildings by optimizing smart building energy systems. This approach, which is instrumental in advancing the shift towards a sustainable future, focuses on maximizing occupant comfort while markedly diminishing the energy footprint and emissions of the built environment. The study offers a comprehensive techno-economic and environmental analysis of the system performance conducted on residential apartments in Baghdad, Iraq. The results are promising, showing that the system successfully transfers 75.6 MWh of renewable electricity to the local grid and utilizes an additional 120.42 MWh for the internal needs of the building and operation of electrical components. A key component of the system is the biomass heater, which meets over 70.2% of the heating demand, proving particularly effective during periods of low solar power availability and high electricity costs. This highlights the importance of integrating diverse energy sources to reduce dependence on the grid. The results also reveals that the costs associated with energy consumption are substantially offset by the revenue generated from selling excess renewable energy during high-production periods. This results in average monthly energy costs being maintained below $151.2/MWh over several years. This cost-efficiency is achieved by eschewing batteries and optimizing the dimensions of the heat pump. Additionally, the system demonstrates a low emission index of 12.85 kgCO 2 /MWh, indicating a potential reduction in CO 2 emissions by 75.6 TCO 2 /year compared to traditional energy mixes.

In structural applications, Epoxy resin finds extensive application for its low cost, high strength to low weight ratio, higher amenability with superior dimensional stability in elevated temperatures, and chemical inertness. Furthermore, graphene has been extensively used as reinforcement materials to enhance strength and tensile/flexural stiffness. In contrast, natural silk within the other natural fibres showed higher impact strength and ductility, good biodegradability, and excellent biocompatibility for a reinforcement filler material. Several ongoing field research on graphene and natural silk as an individual reinforcement in the epoxy composites have shown significant positive results. This paper concentrates on the research gap of hybridization of graphene and natural silk fibres (SF) as a combined reinforcement material to develop lightweight and high-performance epoxy composite material for structural applications. This paper discusses the suitable material selection and fabrication process for hybrid GO/SF epoxy composite. Graphene Oxide (GO) choice for the reinforcement on epoxy resin by (0,0.5,1,1.5,2,3 and 5) % volume fractions via wet transfer ultrasonication process and plain-woven Bombyx mori silk for 60% SF reinforcement discussed in the paper. The optimum volume fraction of GO and SF promoting significant improvements of the epoxy resin composites' mechanical properties needs further evaluation during material characterization.

Surface quality simulation with statistical analysis after milling AZ91D magnesium alloy using PCD tool

Machined surface quality is one of the key indicators of a correctly conducted milling process. This paper reports on the results from numerical and statistical analysis of the condition of AZ91D Magnesium Alloy after milling using the PCD Tool. Three surface roughness indicators were of interest - average roughness (Ra), maximum height of profile (Rz) and mean width of profile elements (RSm). The surface quality, described by Ra/Rz, shows negligible deterioration at higher speeds vc. Two artificial neural networks, MLP (Multilayer Perceptron) and RBF (Radial Basis Function), modelled with Statistica package, were employed to simulate the effects that individual process variables have on the 2D surface roughness parameters. The statistical significance of the results was assessed using the one-way ANOVA technique. Given the successful validation of the numerical and empirical data (R2 > 0.85), it may be inferred that our ANNs are an accurate predicting tool that models milling parameters ensuring that the surface is of suitable quality. The surface roughness indicators are generated from the corresponding technological parameters. Simulations save time, effort and costs that would be incurred by additional machining tests.

The effect of inclination angle of finned cylinders upon free convection heat transfer

An experimental and theoretical study of the free heat transfer from three cylinders finned with spiral fins arranged in vertical array and fixed between two plates. Three fin cylinders made of (steel iron), of outer diameter (12 mm), inner diameter (10 mm), fins diameter (30 mm). The inclination angle of the cylinders was changed to four angles (0°, 30°, 60° and 90°), four thermal flux levels were tested (121.16, 278.8, 497.9 and 792.5) W / m2. Study was conducted for a range of Rayleigh number (121.16, 278.8, 497.9, and 792.5) in open space to surrounding air where heat is carried by a convection and radiation. Theoretical study was done using ANSYS Fluent 18 to simulate the practical side. Experimental results found that the Nusselt number value of the finned cylinders was maximum value at the angle (30°) with low heat flux levels (121.16, 278.8) ) W / m2, but at the high heat flux levels ( 497.9, 792.5 ) W / m2 the best angle which give the maximum value of Nusselt number was angle (60°). Theoretical results of heat transfer coefficient were convergent with experimental results with a small difference rate does not exceed 8%, due to the difference in the theoretical and experimental working conditions as the theoretical work was in ideal conditions either the experimental work under the natural laboratory conditions.
