Advances in information technology now provide a variety of digital tools for the mathematical investigation of the visual complexity of textile patterns and decorative designs. In this article, we report on innovative applications of this technology to the geometric analysis of Kuba cloth and Zillij mosaics. From our perspective, these objects present distinctly different analytical challenges, and typify problematic aspects of the classification and generation problems of artistic design. Mathematical considerations led us to use neural networks, shape grammars, and related technologies to approach these problems. Our ultimate goal is to use our methods, samples, and peripherals to build an interactive database for the study of historical patterns and the generation of contemporary designs. Details of our research plan can be found in Kolak Dudek et al. 2003: 129-35. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There have been numerous attempts recently to promote technology based education (Shrestha, 1997) in the poorer third world countries, but so far all these have not provided a sustainable solution as they are either centered and controlled from abroad and relying solely on foreign donors for their sustenance or they are not web based, which make distribution problematic, and some are not affordable by most of the local population in these places. In this paper we discuss an application, the Local College Learning Management System (LoColms), which we are developing, that is both sustainable and economical to suit the situation in these countries. The application is a web based system, and aims at improving the traditional form of education by empowering the local universities. Its economicability comes from the fact that it is supported by traditional communication technology, the public switching telephone network system, PSTN, which eliminates the need for packet switched or dedicated private virtual networks (PVN) usually required in similar situations. At a later stage, we shall incorporate ontology and paging tools to improve resource sharability and storage optimization in the Proxy Caches (ProCa) and LoColms servers. The system is based on the client/server paradigm and its infrastructure consists of the PSTN, ProCa, with the learning centers accessing the universities by means of point to point protocol (PPP).

In control and other modeling applications, fuzzy system with B-spline membership functions and CMAC neural network with B-spline basis functions are sometimes desired to approximate not only the assigned smooth function as well as its derivatives. In this paper, by designing the fuzzy system and CMAC neural network with B-spline basis functions, we prove that such a fuzzy system and CMAC can universally approximate a smooth function and its derivatives, that is to say, for a given accuracy, we can approximate an arbitrary smooth function by such fuzzy system and CMAC that not only the function is approximated within this accuracy, but its derivatives are approximated as well. The conclusions here provide solid theoretical foundation for their extensive applications.

Considers a formal publication to represent an abstract to a larger body of work: a pvramid of scientific and technical information (STI). While this abstract may be sufficient for some applications, an in‐depth use or analysis is likely to require the supporting layers from the pyramid. Describes how “buckets” have been developed to preserve this pyramid of STI. Buckets provide an archive‐ and protoeol‐independent container construct in which all related information objects can be logically grouped together, archived, and manipulated as a single object. Furthermore, buckets are active archival objects and can communicate with each other, people, or arbitrary network services. Buckets are an implementation of the Smart Object, Dumb Archive (SODA) DL model. Discusses the motivation, design, and implication of bucket use in DLs with respect to grey literature.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

Discusses some of the problems designers face in building catalogs in large networks and relates them back to the resource discovery problem. Currently many catalogs tend to be built in an ad hoc fashion-which leads to a great variety in the quality of publicly accessible network catalogs. Furthermore, the research surrounding these catalogs tends to focus on narrow technical issues-resulting in difficult-to-use catalogs. Addresses this problem by providing a usability framework based on the library science and human computer interaction literature, and demonstrates some of those principles via an example of a prototype. Results are interesting to resource discovery tool developers in that a framework for understanding the general resource discovery problem is provided and some techniques for dealing with those problems are presented.
