Artificial Intelligence federates numerous scientific fields in the aim of developing machines able to assist human operators performing complex treatments---most of which demand high cognitive skills (e.g. learning or decision processes). Central to this quest is to give machines the ability to estimate the likeness or similarity between things in the way human beings estimate the similarity between stimuli. In this context, this book focuses on semantic measures: approaches designed for comparing semantic entities such as units of language, e.g. words, sentences, or concepts and instances defined into knowledge bases. The aim of these measures is to assess the similarity or relatedness of such semantic entities by taking into account their semantics, i.e. their meaning---intuitively, the words tea and coffee, which both refer to stimulating beverage, will be estimated to be more semantically similar than the words toffee (confection) and coffee, despite that the last pair has a higher syntactic similarity. The two state-of-the-art approaches for estimating and quantifying semantic similarities/relatedness of semantic entities are presented in detail: the first one relies on corpora analysis and is based on Natural Language Processing techniques and semantic models while the second is based on more or less formal, computer-readable and workable forms of knowledge such as semantic networks, thesauri or ontologies. Semantic measures are widely used today to compare units of language, concepts, instances or even resources indexed by them (e.g., documents, genes). They are central elements of a large variety of Natural Language Processing applications and knowledge-based treatments, and have therefore naturally been subject to intensive and interdisciplinary research efforts during last decades. With the increasing grid penetration levels of wind power, there is a large need for the energy reserves for grid support during under-frequency conditions. Such energy reserves are created by operating the wind farm at non-optimum/deloaded operating points, as well as through storage of excess energy in Batteries. This paper provides technical and economic analysis of the above strategies and thus provides a case comparison of deloaded wind farm to that of wind-Battery system. A simplified Excel-based Proforma financial model has been developed to perform sensitivity analysis, as well as to obtain the impact of these strategies on the cost of energy. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, parametric and numerical model of the motors of a robot are extracted. A method is proposed here to control the torque and velocity of the motor simultaneously using the extracted dynamics of the motor and consequently control the robot motion more accurately. Parametric model of the motors are derived by conducting standard tests like locked rotor test and step and sine wave input test. In order to derive the neural network and numerical models, a set of sinusoidal, triangular, and random steps signal, are applied as the input to the motor and its speed is recorded as the output. Neural network model of the motors is extracted by using these dataset and considering the MLP neural network structure with Levenberg _Marquardt training method. Results of the numerical model and parametric models are compared and validated by experimental tests.

This paper describes the main technologies used for distributed generation and the optimization of a system that contains these technologies. The term distributed generation refers to the production of electricity near the consumption place. The distributed generation resources are renewable energies and cogeneration (simultaneous production of heat and electricity). Renewable energy is energy from natural resources such as wind, sunlight, tides, waves, geothermal heat and biomass. The optimization aims to minimize the electricity production costs ensuring that the load is served reliably.

Effects of Distributed Generation on Electric Power Systems

This paper describes the effects of distributed generation on electric power systems. Distributed generation is a term that refers to the production of electricity near the consumption place. The effects of distributed generation are: short circuit levels are increased, load losses change, voltage profiles change along the network, voltage transients will appear, congestions can appear in system branches, power quality and reliability may be affected and the networks protections may not function properly. A load flow analysis is done for the IEEE 14 system in which a distributed generator is added, that is on-grid or off-grid.

High efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, introduced by joint collaborative team on video coding (JCT-VC) is the newest international standard of video compression. This standard provides more compression and better video quality, compared to the previous standards such as H.264. The higher compression efficiency is obtained at the cost of an increase in the computational load. One of the portions which imposes high computational load to encoder is the intra prediction unit. In HEVC, 35 modes are proposed for intra prediction to improve the compression efficiency. To reduce the computational load of intra prediction, HEVC uses a pre-processing step, called Rough Mode Decision (RMD). It selects a number of best prediction modes. Then, using Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) process, the encoder selects the best prediction mode. We reduced the number of the tested modes in RMD from 35 to 19 in our proposed method. Moreover, we reduced the number of the selected modes through the RMD step in order to decrease the encoding time. Simulation results indicate 14.2% reduction in the encoding time whereas the R-D specification in general remains unchanged.

Traditionally, thumb print and iris pattern are used for person identification as biometric features. Use of ear is recent biometric evolution for identification. A system is presented here for person identification using ear features. Digitally captured ear image is processed to extract ear features (Helix rim, Lobule, Triangularfossa, Concha and Tragus) and stored in database for matching process. Matching process uses projection lines to quantify ear features. Matching process gives matched profile as a result of system in graphical format as well as textual format with tolerance limit of ± 15%.

This paper demonstrates a approach to design the field programmable CMOS operational transresistance amplifier. All the MOSFETs are replaced by the floating gate MOSFETs to make the OTRA design programmable. The charge at the floating gate can be programmed after fabrication, based on Hot-e-injection and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling techniques. This programming charge at floating gate results in threshold voltage variation in these MOSFETs, which in turn can modify circuit's specifications. The high frequency small signal analysis of the design is prepared and specifications of the design are rederived in terms of threshold voltages of the MOSFETs. The expressions of output voltage, transresistance, input impedance, output impedance and offsets are derived in terms of threshold voltages of respective MOSFETs. In order to achieve circuits AC and DC characteristics, the circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-spice 0.35um CMOS process. The simulated results shows 13 bit programming precision in transresistance, input impedance, output impedance, Temperature stability and dc offsets with respect to threshold voltage of respective MOSFETs.

With the increasing grid penetration levels of wind power, there is an increasing need to study both the power control systems and the regulatory aspects associated with frequency control capabilities of wind power plants at various levels (turbine, wind farm and power system levels). This is especially very important in the United States with a goal of achieving 20% nation's electricity from wind energy by 2030. This paper provides observations and challenges identified with wind energy integration with respect to active power control strategies used in implementing frequency regulation at various levels. This paper also discusses the current and future aspects of market regulation of frequency responsive services offered by converter based variable generation technologies and the need for an appropriate utility market structure in order to provide settlements for these capabilities.
