Energy supply and demand are at the core of one of the pressing problems worldwide as the present energy production is still dominated by non-renewable resources. The need to meet the goals for the climate has motivated the energy sector to embrace cleaner and greener electro-energy systems. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, also known as polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cells, have lately attracted more attention from various sectors due to their exceptional advantages, including high theoretical efficiency, low operating temperatures, and low-to-zero emissions. Therefore, they can be successfully used in a variety of applications. Hence, a novel membrane that possesses adequate proton conductivity is required. Therefore, in this work, MXene was investigated as a potential proton conductor. MXene/PVDF based membrane was synthesized with different concentrations 3, 5, 8, 10, 13 and 15 wt.% respectively, and evaluated for their proton conduction using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The values of the conductivity obtained were:3.22× x10- 3, 6.2× x10-3, 0.025, 0.041, 3.77×10-3 and 4.2 ×10-3 S/cm, respectively. The results of this study show that the synthesized membranes in this work appear to be promising for PEM fuel cells applications. © 2023 Computers and Industrial engineering. All rights reserved.

Machine learning (ML) makes predictions or supports decision making based on data, achieving high accuracy, saving time and resources, and even running real-time analysis. However, one drawback of these models is the lack of transparency in complex models, reducing confidence in sensitive fields such as health. This paper analyzes electroencephalogram (EEG) data to predict schizophrenia in patients. Three classifiers are compared, considering Support Vector Machines(SVM), Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Three metrics are used to measure the classification process, including accuracy (ACC), area under the curve (AUC) and F-l score (F1). XAI is incorporated into the pipeline to identify relevant features. XGBoost is the model with the best performance in predicting schizophrenia cases, reaching an ACC = 0.93, AUC = 0.93 and F1 score = 0.92, outperforming the SVM and AdaBoost algorithms. The SHAP explainability technique was applied on the XGBoost model, identifying the sex, IQ, delta T6, and delta Pz waves as the most relevant characteristics in the prediction processes. Based on the data analysis, we found that schizophrenia causes an alteration of the delta wave in an EEG, which is different to other mental illnesses. On the other hand, the study generates a specific impact by showing that XGBoost presents better results in 3 validation metrics (ACC, AUC, and F1 Score) compared to SVM and AdaBoost. It is shown that balancing classes is essential to obtain better ML predictions.

How chief risk officers (CROs) can have meaningful and productive dealings with insurance agencies: a leading example

In broad terms, risk management (RM) covers four conventional actions in addressing operational risks (OpRisks), i.e., actions to mitigate, eliminate, accept, and transfer operational risks. In relation to transferring OpRisks to external third parties, this study aids chief risk officers (CROs) in addressing issues related to the reduction of economic exposure to OpRisk. In this respect, the economic handling of OpRisks and their coverage through specific insurance programs are among the major challenges that CROs face within their roles. The aim of this paper is to provide CROs with an analytical pathway to addressing these challenges by applying the total cost of risk (TCoR) method tailored to their purposes. Through a leading example, this paper demonstrates that the TCoR approach meaningfully and productively supports CROs’ decisions when striving to deal with OpRisk. In fact, the TCoR approach implementation, together with the application of Monte Carlo simulation as a computational tool, drives TCoR value optimization when OpRisk is transferred to insurance agencies. In addition, by applying a TCoR framework, CROs can find the correct and cost-effective balance between the company’s retention level—consistent with the company’s risk appetite—and the premiums paid to insurance agencies. In conclusion, this paper provides CROs with a methodological approach for efficiently building relationships with insurance agencies by consistently addressing TCoR-based dealings. © The Author(s) 2021.

In this paper, Graphene Aerogel (GA) is prepared and investigated for its potential employment for solar energy harvesting applications. GA can be applied in solar cells applications as an absorption material and as a catalyst for fuel cells. GA is characterized by its extraordinary electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, in addition to a large surface and a low density. The electrical, mechanical, thermal, and absorption characteristics of GA can be tuned depending on the manufacturing process. Hence, GA is utilized in a multitude of applications such as: supercapacitors, air purification, oil and dye absorption from water, and water waste treatment. GA is also an excellent candidate for superior electrodes. In addition, GA are environmentally friendly materials since they are 100% recyclable and do not produce any ozone-depleting compounds. In this paper, GA is synthesized, characterized, and assessed for solar energy harvesting applications with the aid of absorption and Cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests. Results show that GA has immense potential in solar application due to its low band gap and outstanding optical and electrochemical properties. © 2022 IEEE.

In the water industry, an accurate estimation of end-use water consumption is helpful for the implementation of efficient water systems and water-saving technologies. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of water consumption at nine households north of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), subjected to water consumption monitoring at high temporal resolution (i.e. 1 s). Overall, 36,297 water-use events monitored over about 447 days were automatically segmented into 44,115 individual events by means of a new rule-based filtering algorithm, and then labelled by expert analysts. A multi-stage analysis was then conducted in order to evaluate daily per capita end-use water consumption, daily end-use profiles, average end-use parameter average, and their statistical distributions. The results achieved provide insight into the features of end-use consumption, confirming that the largest components are typically related to showers/bathtubs, toilets, and washing machines, whereas different end-use parameter distributions can emerge. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. The issue of early-age concrete cracking is challenging and relies on the state of concrete soon after it is placed in the formwork. The concrete state is a function of the strains associated with thermal and other dilatations and the level of in situ strength. Both strain and strength primarily require information on the temperature–time history of the concrete element. For larger elements, the thermal history varies significantly across the thickness and the concrete material itself acts as confinement for discrete elements. Due to complexity of this issue, designers currently rely on mock tests and/or finite-element (FE) modelling for structures that are deemed ‘important’. Both approaches are costly and time consuming. It is therefore important to have a robust yet simple model to estimate the temperature variation experienced by concrete elements. The proposed spreadsheet-based model presented in this paper aims to provide a rapid estimate of the temperature profiles within a hydrating concrete element. The model uses the concept of effective thickness and the revised heat compensation technique. It was validated based on the measured temperature development of a concrete block of rectangular section. The proposed model was also successfully compared with output from FE software (TNO Diana).

Rotary Inverted Pendulum Control using Robust Generalized Dynamic Inversion with Adaptive Neural Estimation

A novel robust generalized dynamic inversion control system with adaptive neural estimation (RGDI-ANE) is designed for trajectory tracking of the under actuated rotary inverted pendulum (RIP). The RGDI control design begins by prescribing a virtual differential constraint dynamics (VCD) that imitates the desired tracking control objectives. The baseline RGDI control law is derived by inverting the VCD using dynamically scaled Generalized Inversion, and then augmenting a sliding mode control (SMC) element to provide robustness against performance deterioration due to dynamic scaling of the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. Furthermore, an adaptive estimator that is based on radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NN) is adopted to limit the dependency of RGDI control on the RIP mathematical model. The weighting matrices of the RBF-NN are updated using a Lyapunov control function. The closed loop RGDI-ANE control system is shown to guarantee semi-global asymptotic stability. Computer simulations along with experimental tests have been conducted on Quanser's RIP system to validate the performance of RGDI-ANE control, and the results are compared with the results obtained by using the SMC and the linear quadratic control methodologies.

Effects of various fillers on the thermal shock and fouling resistance characteristics of zirconia-based composite coatings for high-temperature applications

Composite coating technology has been extensively developed to meet industrial demands for coatings with specifications that exceed the capabilities of conventional coating technologies and that can function in extreme environments and high temperatures. The composite coating in this study is focused on materials that have hydrophobicity. To achieve this hydrophobicity, the coating must have at least one restrictive property: antifouling. In this research, antifouling coating materials based on certain zirconia ceramic composites (ZrO2) and fillers, such as boron nitride, MoS2, and graphite, are chosen. The substrate used is a low-carbon steel, which is used in high-temperature power plants. The slurry spray coating method is chosen, which is a simple and low-cost method. Thermal shock and fouling resistance tests are conducted, and the samples are further observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results show that the higher the hBN filler content in the zirconia composite coating is, the better the thermal shock and antifouling resistance levels. This phenomenon is indicated by the lower delamination of the coating after the thermal shock treatment and the lower fouling of sodium sulfate deposits on the surface of the coating after the antifouling treatment than before. The same result is shown by the zirconia composite coating with hybrid filler (hBN-MoS2-Graphite). © 2024 The Authors

The development of third-generation photovoltaic (TGPV) technologies promises to address some of the limitations of conventional silicon-based solar cells. However, the scalability of these technologies is a critical factor in their practical application. TGPV include Perovskite Solar Cells (PSC), Organic Solar Cells (OSC), and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). This paper reviews and summarizes the recent trends and research on the deposition techniques and modularity of TGPV. Various deposition techniques such as slot-die coating, thermal evaporation, and spray pyrolysis are discussed, along with their advantages and limitations. Modularity, which allows for the integration of TGPV cells into different structures, is also examined as a critical factor in scalability. The paper concludes that the scalability of TGPV technologies depends on the development of efficient and cost-effective deposition techniques and modularity, which will facilitate the integration of the TGPV cells into various structures and enable the widespread use of these promising technologies. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
