Background: Post-stroke disability restricts a patient's physical activity, affects the patient's quality of life, and leads to higher medical costs. Therefore, it is essential to promote patients' continuous exercise during this period of recovery. Objective: This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of applying a health management platform combined with wearable devices to enhance stroke patients’ self-management of recovery and to allow comparisons with active care intervention management. Method: This quasi-experimental study aimed at examining those participants who had sustained a stroke for the first time. A 90-day experiment was implemented with the intervention of monitoring and active care from the researchers who also interviewed the selected participants at the end of the study. A total of 26 participants were examined (14 in the experimental group and 12 in the control group). Result: The participants in the experimental group made significant progress between the pre- and post-tests. Firstly, their six-minute walking distance improved by 89.5 m (p < 0.001). Secondly, their sit-to-stand transfers in 60 s improved 2.85 times (p = 0.017), and their Berg balance test improved by 6.36 points (p = 0.003). Finally, the Partners in Health scale (PIH) scores also improved. According to the data collected in the interviews, the researchers' intervention improved the patients’ self-management ability. Conclusion: The short-term physical performance in the experimental group after the intervention was better than that in the control group. In clinical practice, it is suggested that continuous interaction between medical staff and patients be sustained while applying wearable devices to promote the patient's self-management ability. © 2022 The Authors

Ongoing efforts focus on quantifying plastic pollution and describing and estimating the related magnitude of exposure and impacts on human and environmental health. Data gathered during such work usually follows a receptor perspective. However, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) represents an emitter perspective. This study examines existing data gathering and reporting approaches for field and laboratory studies on micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) exposure and effects relevant to LCA data inputs. The outcomes indicate that receptor perspective approaches do not typically provide suitable or sufficiently harmonised data. Improved design is needed in the sampling, testing and recording of results using harmonised, validated and comparable methods, with more comprehensive reporting of relevant data. We propose a three-level set of requirements for data recording and reporting to increase the potential for LCA studies and models to utilise data gathered in receptor-oriented studies. We show for which purpose such data can be used as inputs to LCA, particularly in life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods. Implementing these requirements will facilitate proper integration of the potential environmental impacts of plastic losses from human activity (e.g. litter) into LCA. Then, the impacts of plastic emissions can eventually be connected and compared with other environmental issues related to anthropogenic activities. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The most important concern of smart cities and electronic governments that provide their services through smart applications and modern technology is security, reliability and privacy management. Therefore, it has become an effective research area. The open access environment that the Smart City idea offers suffers from the issue of data access and integrity rights. Encryption, Sequence Detection, and other traditional techniques may be somewhat unable to maintain the required level of security. In this paper, we suggest a practical framework based on blockchain technology and how its positive advantages will be reflected to provide a secure, reliable, integrity and controlled data access system. The main idea presented by the research is to manage access rights and protect privacy according to blockchain strategies. The analytical results showed a high level of protection, decentralization and reliability of the proposal based on blockchain technology and its advantages.

Hypotension is common in critically ill patients. Early prediction of hypotensive events in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) allows clinicians to pre-emptively treat the patient and avoid possible organ damage. In this study, we investigate the performance of various supervised machine-learning classification algorithms along with a real-time labeling technique to predict acute hypotensive events in the ICU. It is shown that logistic regression and SVM yield a better combination of specificity, sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV). Logistic regression is able to predict 85% of events within 30 minutes of their onset with 81% PPV and 96% specificity, while SVM results in 96% specificity, 83% sensitivity and 82% PPV. To further reduce the false alarm rate, we propose a high-level decision-making algorithm that filters isolated false positives identified by the machine-learning algorithms. By implementing this technique, 24% of the false alarms are filtered. This saves 21 hours of medical staff time through 2,560 hours of monitoring and significantly reduces the disturbance caused by alarming monitors.

Studying Seismic Stability of Buildings Constructed Using Lift-Slab Method and Equipped with Rubber-Steel Seismic Isolators

As the construction industry develops, unique unconventional methods of improving the seismic stability of buildings are used. One of these methods is the seismic isolation of buildings using special isolating supports. Rubber steel supports with high damping ability can improve the seismic stability of the building by 1.5 times on average. Since the seismic stability of the buildings constructed using the lift-slab method was set at up to 7 points, we expect to increase it to 8-9 points through the installation of the rubber steel supports in these buildings. The implementation of the current seismic resistance improvement methods for the existing buildings and structures shall help achieve the following: improve the preparation of the authorities and residents to major earthquakes; significantly reduce seismic risks and the consequences of both major earthquakes and industrial disasters caused by earthquakes; provide the economic and social stability of the country in case of emergencies.

Chemical investigations on the ethyl acetate extract of the octocoral Capnella imbricata collected from the waters of Taiwan, which led to the isolation of three capnellenes (1–3), including one new metabolite, 9(12)-capnellene-8β,10α,15-triol (1), along with two known metabolites, 9(12)-capnellene-5α,8β,10α-triol (2), and 9(12)-capnellene-8β,10α-diol (3). The structures of the isolated metabolites were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic analyses, while the relative stereochemistry of 3 was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for the first time in this study. Compounds 1–3 were evaluated in terms of their anti-inflammatory activity by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase by human neutrophils. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites. Multiple quality assurance measures are performed, including applying reference materials that resemble typical PM samples, acceptance testing, and routine quality control. Method detection limits and uncertainties are estimated. Concentrations of dust and trace element oxides (TEO) are determined from the elemental dataset. In addition to sites in arid regions, a moderately high mean dust concentration (6 μg/m) in PM is also found in Dhaka (Bangladesh) along with a high average TEO level (6 μg/m). High carcinogenic risk (>1 cancer case per 100000 adults) from airborne arsenic is observed in Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kanpur (India), and Hanoi (Vietnam). Industries of informal lead-acid battery and e-waste recycling as well as coal-fired brick kilns likely contribute to the elevated trace element concentrations found in Dhaka.

In this study, we implement thiol termination on the surface of few-nanometer-sized silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles (NPs) to enable further applications, such as fluorescent biomarkers. Various spectroscopic techniques are employed to monitor the effectiveness of the surface treatment. Additionally, a thiol-Michael addition reaction is performed by conjugating 4-arm PEG-maleimide molecules to the thiol groups of SiC NPs, further demonstrating the reactivity of thiol-terminated SiC NPs. These thiolated SiC NPs, both with and without conjugated molecules, open new avenues in biotechnology. © 2025, CC BY.

Friction - wear modeling in drilling process of H-13 tool steel

Simulation of metal cutting is complex both from numerical and physical perspective. The scope of this work is to elaborate on the process and physics of metal cutting, and more specifically drilling. The description of H-13 steel dry drilling with the use of a single-layer TiN coated carbide twist drill is presented. H-13 is a high strength alloy steel used in demanding applications and elevated temperatures. A simulation model was developed with use of Deform-3D software, and an experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the acquired simulation results, meaning the wear mechanisms and thermal loads implemented during the process of drilling. The Usui wear model was used for the calculation of the wear rate of the drill. Regarding the experiment, a thermal camera was used in order to record the temperature of the drill after the process. The comparative analysis of the simulation models and the experiment showed that adhesion is the dominant wear mechanism. Higher wear values were observed in the rake faces of the drill, where the coating starts to fade, due to built-up edges (BUE). The tool and workpiece temperatures reach near steady state conditions during process. Elevated temperatures are applied on the removed material. Good chip evacuation and chip length indicate that coated drills with optimized geometry are suitable for drilling tough materials.
