Mathematical competency is vital to success in engineering. Competency requires not only short-term mastery of mathematical concepts, but also long-term retention. Research in cognitive psychology shows that the more times information is retrieved from memory, the more likely it is to be remembered over the long-term. Research also shows that increasing the amount of time between retrievals increases long-term retention. Which of these interventions-increasing the amount or the temporal spacing of retrieval practice-has the greater impact on long-term retention? Supported by NSF's Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program, we answered this question by independently manipulating the amount and the spacing of retrieval practice in a precalculus course for engineering students. This was done by varying the number of quiz questions concerning key precalculus objectives (amount of practice) and varying whether those questions were massed on a single quiz or distributed across quizzes in multiple weeks (spacing of practice). Long-term retention was assessed in a test of precalculus knowledge administered one month after the end of the precalculus course. We found that students were significantly more likely to retain precalculus objectives when quiz questions had been spaced versus massed. Increasing the number of quiz questions did not significantly affect retention. These findings suggest that educators wishing to increase students' long-term retention of mathematics knowledge should increase the spacing, rather than the amount, of retrieval practice in their courses. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.

Segmentation of breast tumor is an important step for breast cancer follow-up and treatment. Automating this challenging task can help radiologists to reduce the high workload of breast cancer analysis. In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach to automate the segmentation of breast tumors in DCE-MRI data. We build an architecture based on U-net fully convolutional neural network. The trained model can handle both detection and segmentation on each single breast slice. In this study, we used a dataset of 86 DCE-MRI, acquired before and after chemotherapy, of 43 patients with local breast cancer, a total of 5452 slices. The data have been annotated manually by an experienced radiologist. The model was trained and validated on 85% and 15% of the data and achieved a mean IoU of 76,14%.

Recent advancements in the discovery of natural products have made significant progress in rapidly identifying known compounds from complex extracts using advanced spectroscopic technologies. Among these methods, one powerful approach called MS/MS molecular networking (MN) organizes chemical similarity based on MS/MS fragmentation data, serving as a valuable complement to traditional dereplication strategies. In our ongoing research focused on lead discovery from a sustainable medicinal source, an aquaculture soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum, the MN profiling approach revealed the chemical diversity of biscembranoid analogs. By analyzing the MN pattern, biscembranoid derivatives with unique MS/MS fragments were prioritized for further investigation. Two novel biscembranoids, sarcotroxide A (1) and B (2), were successfully obtained through targeted isolation. These novel biscembranes contained an unprecedented 3-hydroperoxy-3-methylcyclohex-1-ene moiety compared with all biscembranoid analogs. The chemical structures of the two new biscembranoids were confirmed through spectroscopic analyses and in silico calculations. Their anti-inflammatory properties were assessed against the generation of superoxide anion (O₂^•−) and elastase release in activated human neutrophils. Sarcotroxides A (1) and B (2) exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting O₂^•− accumulation (with 43.67% and 61.62% inhibition) and elastase release (with 38.21% and 61.62% inhibition) at 10 µM. These findings validated the potential of these biscembranoids from the cultured S. trocheliophorum as promising candidates for the future development of anti-inflammatory agents specifically designed to target neutrophils. © 2023 The Authors

Improving thermal comfort conditions in K-12 educational buildings in hot and humid climate: a case study in Cucuta, Colombia

The school buildings in Colombia are built based on geographical locations and regional construction systems. However, external weather conditions and building design can have a significant impact on the thermal comfort of students, which affects the academic performance and productivity. This paper investigates the thermal comfort performance for an educational building in a hot and humid city in Cucuta, Colombia, built under national guidelines. This school is a concrete structure without mechanical cooling. However, field observation discovered that 82% of the time students experienced thermal discomfort. To investigate causes and provide mitigation strategies, a whole building energy simulation is conducted. Design Builder is used to evaluate the indoor thermal conditions compared to outdoor data collected. ASHRAE 55 adaptative model is used for the evaluation. It is found that 79% of the time the thermal conditions are outside the acceptable range during the year. The effect of mitigation measures i.e., occupancy, roof insulation, and natural ventilation rates are investigated through simulations. It is found that occupancy and natural ventilation rate have a significant impact on the indoor temperature and relative humidity, and thus the thermal comfort. Passive design strategies are proposed in optimizing the school building design to meet ASHARE-55 requirements.

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in Tl213 and 874(5) keV in Tl215. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in Tl213 and 3.0(3) ms in Tl215 suggest spins and parities 11/2− with the single proton-hole configuration πh11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single πs1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the PbA+1 cores. The lowering of the 11/2− states is ascribed to an increase of the πh11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second νg9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the πh11/2 and νg9/2 orbitals. The new ms isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly magic Pb208.

This paper focuses on railway transport enterprises and their classification. It outlines the number of railway stations of the Kuibyshev railway (KZhD) located in various regions of this country. The classification takes into account the region where these railway stations are located, the number of tracks at every particular station, and its land area. The article provides data on the surveyed railway transport enterprises and information on surface wastewater generated on their territory. The researchers analyze surface run-off from various railway industry enterprises, this wastewater composition and the dependence of contamination of surface wastewater discharged by different railway industry enterprises on the form and composition of their watersheds. They come up with recommendations for criteria of surface wastewater disposal from the territories of railway transport enterprises and railway tracks, as well as proposals for the treatment of surface run-off from the enterprises under consideration.

The paper focuses on surface wastewater collection and its disposal from railway station tracks. It is described that usually either drainage trays located along the tracks or perforated pipelines arranged in special channels filled with water-permeable material are used to collect and divert surface run-off from the railway track. The analysis reveals the qualitative and quantitative composition of surface run-off. The paper shares data obtained during the investigation of railway stations and enterprises of the Kuibyshev railway and focuses on contamination of the territory of this enterprise with petroleum products and on concentrations surface wastewater contamination with petroleum products, suspended substances and iron. The authors further introduce technological schemes for surface wastewater treatment, which allow achieving the quality of treated wastewater at the level of maximum permissible concentrations for water bodies of fishing purposes.
