The influence of immersion in buffer systems simulating body fluids on properties and morphology of octacalcium phosphate granules

Octacalcium phosphate is the precursor of biological apatite, that is why it is of special interest in bone regeneration due to it's biocompatibility and biodegradability. This study was performed to examine the in vitro stability of octacalcium phosphate granules in physiological solutions. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data were obtained before and after granules immersion. The variation of Ca2+ and HPO4 2- concentration in the soaking solutions suggests that the material transformation occurs through octacalcium phosphate dissolution followed by hydroxyapatite precipitation.

Review of the use of mangrove forests in supporting the socio-economic life of fishing communities

Mangrove forests have an important function in human life that cannot be replaced by other functions. The existence of mangrove forests has six main functions, namely biological, ecological, physical, social, economic and chemical functions. This article discusses the description of mangrove forest management in meeting the needs of the economic and social functions of the fishing communities on the coast of Merauke Regency, Papua Province, which were reviewed descriptively using relevant literature studies. In terms of economic function, mangrove forests provide economic value for fishing communities because mangrove forests become habitat for crabs, fish and other marine biota that are captured and sold as the main source of family income. In addition, the use of mangrove forests by fishermen on the coast is used as firewood and building materials. The high utilization of mangrove forests by coastal communities that ignores ecological sustainability causes damage to mangrove forests that threatens the sustainability of ecological functions. Damage to mangrove forests in Merauke in the period 2000-2005 was recorded as wide as 2,416 ha while in the 2005-2010 period damage reached 2,233 ha of the total area of the Merauke mangrove forest which reached 216,001.95 Ha or 6.98% of the Merauke forest area. Based on this, the management of mangrove forest utilization needs to get more attention from various parties so that the ecological function of mangrove forests as a condition of sustainable development, especially for fishing communities on the coast, can be realized in Merauke Regency.

Cancer cells have the plasticity to adjust their metabolic phenotypes for survival and metastasis. During metastasis, a developmental program known as the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role. There is extensive cross-talk between metabolism and EMT, but how this leads to coordinated physiological changes is still uncertain. The elusive connection between metabolism and EMT compromises the efficacy of metabolic therapies targeting metastasis. In this review, we aim for clarifying causation between metabolism and EMT based on recent experimental studies and propose integrated theoretical-experimental efforts to better understand the coupled decision-making of metabolism and EMT. © 2020, CC-BY-NC-ND.

The impact of the anchorage on the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams

This paper presents an experimental study on shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with PBO-FRCM composites. Key parameter of this study is the presence of composite anchorage. PBO-FRCM (Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) composites consist of mineral mortar and PBO (p-Phenylene Benzobis oxazol) composite fibres. The most common failure mechanism of FRCM composites is debonding of the fibers from mineral mortar with no rupture of fibres, due to inappropriate coverage of all fibers by the mortar. To prevent premature debonding of the composite and increase the effectiveness of FRCM strengthening suitable anchorage should be used. In this case, experimental research was conducted on T-shaped RC beams strengthened in shear using PBO-FRCM with anchorages The study consisted of 5 beams, one of which was a control beam, one was strengthened without anchorage and the other three were strengthened with GFRP rebar anchorage. All beams were loaded until failure. Deformation, deflection and the width of cracks were recorded for each level of loading. The failure mechanisms of beams were analysed and described. The results obtained from research showed that the use of FRCM composites increased the shear capacity and had an impact on better use of the properties of the composite material.

Insufficient available dynamic characteristics data of real structures during the service and prior to damage is a concern in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) employing Vibration Based Damage Detection (VBDD) techniques. The issue becomes more intense with complexity of the structure. One remedy for this problem is to apply new methodologies to the same structure as the benchmark structure having measured data available at different cases. Hence, the reliability of the proposed approach is typically confirmed in reality for that type of structures. This study aims to examine the application of an improved two-stage Modal Strain Energy (MSE) method to a benchmark bridge available, whereas the MSE method has already been numerically and experimentally verified. For this purpose, a steel truss bridge model is numerically simulated. Different damage scenarios, affected by up to five percent noise are considered and the first five vertical mode shapes are used. The results show that the proposed method is proper for health monitoring of complex bridges and accurately identifies the damage in the bridge model under consideration. The findings of this paper can confidently contribute to academic studies and the bridge industry to realize the genuine condition and behaviour of complex bridges during the damage.

Analyzing competition between High Speed Rail and Bus mode using market entry game analysis

The introduction of High Speed Rail (HSR) changes the dynamics of the passenger transport therefore understanding the market scenario after the entry of the HSR is of utmost importance. In this study, a market entry game is analysed in the context of High Speed Rail competing with the bus mode on the Bangalore-Mysore corridor. The game is modelled as an extensive form game whose outcome will determine the strategies of the players in the competitive scenario. A discrete choice model is constructed using revealed and stated preference data to compute the modal share in the hypothetical scenario. Utilities in terms of profit for each mode is calculated using assumed cost functions for different strategies of the mode operators. These utilities are then used to form the basis for the extensive form game for the market entry. The extensive form game (with and without perfect information) is analyzed by computing the sub game perfect Nash equilibrium of the game which determines best strategies for each player under different demand scenarios. This study therefore provides a scientific tool for policy makers to analyze best strategies for players under different demand scenarios thereby aiding in decision making.

The anatomic determinants of conductive hearing loss secondary to tympanic membrane perforation

Objectives: Recent studies have introduced middle ear volume(MEV) as a novel determinant of perforation-induced conductive hearing loss(CHL) in a mechanism driven by trans-tympanic membrane pressure differences. The primary aims of this preliminary report are to: 1) correlate CHL with perforation size; 2) describe the relationship between CHL and MEV; and 3) compare CHL across a range of cholesteatoma ***: A retrospective pilot study was performed in 31 subjects with audiometry indicative of conductive hearing loss, temporal bone CT scans,and no prior middle ear surgery. Perforation size and MEV were analyzed with respect to CHL in a cohort of 10 perforated ears with no cholesteatoma. CHLs were compared in 3 groups defined by extent of cholesteatoma ***: Ears with large and small perforations showed mean ABG values of 32.0 ± 15.7 dB and 16.0 ± 16.4 dB, respectively. A direct relationship was observed between MEV and CHL for ears with large perforations across all frequencies, whereas this relationship for small perforations was frequency-dependent. Finally, a statistically significant increase in CHL was found across ears with increasing cholesteatoma involvement at 1000 Hz(X^2(2) = 9.786, p = 0.008),2000 Hz(x^2(2) = 8.455, p = 0.015),and 4000 Hz(x^2(2)= 8.253, p = 0.016).Conclusions: These pilot data suggest that greater perforation-induced conductive hearing losses may be associated with larger perforation sizes and cholesteatoma. The correlation between MEV and CHL may require additional study.
