This paper aims to describe virtual surgical planning (VSP), computer aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping (RP) systems for the preoperative planning of accurate treatment of the Brodie’s Syndrome. 3D models of the patient’s maxilla and mandible were separately generated based on computed tomography (CT) image data and fabricated using RP. During the customized surgical osteotmy guide (CSOG) design process, the correct position was identified and the geometry of the CSOG was generated based on affected mandible of the patient and fabricated by a RP technique. Surgical approach such as preoperative planning and simulation of surgical procedures was performed using advanced software. The VSP and RP assisted CSOG was used to avoid the damage of the adjacent teeth and neighboring healthy tissues. Finally the mock surgery was performed on the biomodel (i.e. diseased RP model) of mandible with reference to the normal maxilla using osteotomy bur with the help of CSOG. Using this CSOG the exact osteotomy of the mandible and the accurate placement of the distractor were obtained. It ultimately improved the accuracy of the surgery in context of the osteotomy and distraction. The time required in cutting the mandible and placement of the distractor was found comparatively less than the regular free hand surgery.

In a full-arch implant rehabilitation ad modum Branemark, the distribution of stress and strain in mandibular bone is influenced by the type, number and position of implants used. In particular, the biomechanical behaviour of the bone structure after complete osseointegration depends on the load transferred to the bone by each fixture. In this study, a finite-element analysis of two models was performed. Models of an all-on-four configuration and a six-implant configuration were compared in a worst-case scenario. A new V parameter is presented to aid the quantitative and comparative analysis of the all-on-four and six-implant configurations. The influence of orthotropy was also investigated, and a geometric change in the all-on-four configuration is presented.

The health department of Rio de Janeiro has required a project to assess the service capacity of the emergency service, in view of the urban and natural disasters that are happening in many places, and large events that are about to happen in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as the Olympics in 2016. The objective of this work is to propose a system of information and coordination involving three agencies: the Operations Center of the GSE/SAMU, the Operations Center of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the Internal regulation nucleus (NIR) of municipal hospitals. The model is based on the information flow, focusing on highly complex patients. The discrete event simulation is used to identify how the system responds to the increased demand. It is stated that the “use of information” is the key to improving overall system performance.

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease of the retina that leads to vision loss. Retinal prostheses are being developed in order to restore functional vision in patients suffering from RP. We conducted in-vivo experiments in order to identify strategies to efficiently stimulate the retina. We electrically stimulated the retina and measured electrically evoked potentials (EERs) from the superior colliculus of rats. We compared the strength of EERs when voltage-controlled and current-controlled pulses of varying pulse width and charge levels were applied to the retina. In addition to comparing EER strength, we evaluated improvement in power efficiency afforded by a high surface area platinum-iridium material. The Web usage mining is the application of data mining, which is used to extract useful information from the online community. The World Wide Web contains at least 4.73 billion pages according to Indexed Web and it contains at least 228.52 million pages according Dutch Indexed web on 6th august 2015, Thursday. It's difficult to get needed data from these billions of web pages in World Wide Web. Here is the importance of web usage mining. Personalizing the search engine helps the web user to identify the most used data in an easy way. It reduces the time consumption; automatic site search and automatic restore the useful sites. This study represents the old techniques to latest techniques used in pattern discovery and analysis in web usage mining from 1996 to 2015. Analyzing user motif helps in the improvement of business, e-commerce, personalisation and improvement of websites.

Incremental sheet metal forming is a recently innovated technology of achieving asymmetric sheet metal parts without using a die and through computer numerical control machine tool based path programming by inducing localized plastic deformation with a spherical ended tool. One of the major limitations of the existing method of incremental sheet metal forming is the limiting wall angle, where a wall angle of greater than about 70° is difficult to obtain. The recently proposed solution of multi-stage incremental forming can enable obtaining wall angles close to 90° but it takes longer manufacturing time and may pose problems for materials that severely strain harden. Robot-assisted incremental forming has a potential to offer an alternative solution for steel wall angle limitation but the existing work in the literature on robot-assisted incremental forming mostly focused only on the use of a standalone robotic manipulator instead of the limiting 3-axis CNC vertical machining center or a more expensive 5 or 6-axis vertical machining center. In this paper a review and comparative study of existing multistage incremental forming and robot-assisted incremental forming technologies in solving the limiting wall angle problem is presented. © 2015 ACM.

Preliminary studies have shown the possibility of using organic-mineral additive based on glyoxal and saponite containing waste for injection strengthening of soils. Modification of the sandy soil with the organic-mineral additive increases its specific cohesion up to 50 times. However, the resulting periodic colloidal structure (PCS) is not resistant to external temperature and humidity effects. The research aim was to evaluate the possibility of obtaining glyoxal derivatives by its chemical interaction with bark lignin substances without their preliminary extraction and test these structures for stabilization of the aluminium silicate colloid-dispersed systems. To activate surface centers of lignin, the bark was ground to the average particle size of 3.2 μm. Identification of IR spectra showed that the characteristic bands for lignin-glyoxal and bark-glyoxal compositions coincide practically and differ significantly from the spectrum of lignin in the range of 500-1500 cm−1. It can confirm the formation of interaction products of bark lignin substances with glyoxal. Before the effect of moisture compressive strength of sandy soil samples with an organic-mineral additive based on glyoxal (reference sample) and its derivatives (test sample) is almost the same and at an average of 6 MPa. However, after moisture saturation the reference sample strength is reduced by 50 times, and the test sample strength is decreased by only 4 times. It confirms the formation of a stable PCS.

Background: Flood is one of the most destructive natural disasters of climate change effects in West Africa. Flood risk occurrence is a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors, which calls for a better understanding of its spatial extent. The aim of this paper is to identify, and map areas of flood risk in Abidjan district. Results: This work is based on the integration of multi-criteria data including slope, drainage density, type of soil, Isohyet, population density, land use and sewer system density within ArcGIS interface. The resulting AHP flood risk map shows that areas under high and very high flood risk covers 34 % of the study area. Conclusion: The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method used as a multi-criteria analysis allowed the integration of several elements under two criteria, hazards and vulnerability, for flood risk assessment and mapping. Results revealed that, Abidjan district is heavily exposed to the risk of flooding. Eight out of thirteen (8/13) municipalities within the district are at a high risk of flooding which calls for decision makers to effectively develop strategies for future flood occurrences within the Abidjan district (South of Côte d’Ivoire). © 2016, Danumah et al.

Effect of the carbonyl iron particles on damping properties of magnetorheological elastomers based on natural rubber

This paper aimed to investigate damping properties of two groups of Magnetorheological Elastomers (MREs) based on natural rubber with 60 wt% iron particles as isotropic and structured MREs. Therefore, the influences of a variety of fabrication conditions on the MREs performances, such as carbonyl iron particle size, external magnetic field and frequency were studied. Moreover, the damping property of MREs with reference sample which contains 60wt% carbon black instead of iron particles was compared. Also, the microstructures of both isotropic and structured MREs were investigated using an environmental scanning electron microscope (SEM) and finally, the damping properties of MREs were measured by using a modified dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) applying magnetic field and without applying magnetic field. The results illustrated that the loss factors of structured MREs were lower than isotropic MREs. In addition, the loss factors increased with applying magnetic field for MREs with large sized particles and didn’t change for MREs with small sized particles. The results also indicated that the loss factor of the reference sample was 43% higher than MREs and the difference had been lowered to 15% by applying external magnetic field of 1.3 T. The storage modulus of MRE samples decreased with applying external magnetic field and the storage modulus of structured MRE was much higher than isotropic MRE when no magnetic field applied. However, the storage modulus of both isotropic and structured samples was the same with applying magnetic field. The analysis implied that the interfacial friction damping mainly comes from the frictional sliding at the interfaces between the free rubber and the particles.

Medan as one of the historical towns in Indonesia is rich with architectural and urban heritages; however, there still has no integrated plan to safeguard them. This paper discusses the cultural mapping of the seven heritage conservation districts in the city of Medan. It focuses on exploring the process and challenges of the study from the initial step of data collections to the building of the cultural maps with web based GIS. Multi-method of data collection tactics or triangulation such as field survey, interviews was done to cover the cultural data resources including both tangible (or quantitative) and intangible (or qualitative). Participation of the local community is essential to identify mainly the intangibles one. Based on the preliminary analysis of the seven heritage districts in Medan city, Merdeka-Kesawan area had whole categories of the cultural assets and resources compared to other six heritage areas. Consequently, it influences the enhancement its cultural heritage significance. By using our methods, we emphasized the importance of the cultural mapping in preparing the conservation policies and strategies of the seven heritage districts in Medan.
