A RNG k-ε turbulent model combined with an experimental measurement with Micro ADV were presented herein to investigate flow in a 180°curved open channel (a 4m straight inflow section, a 180ocurved section, and a 4m straight outflow section) featuring vegetation on its outer bank. A comparison between the numerical result and experimental measurement shows that the RNG k-ε turbulent model can well predict flow in the curved open channel featuring vegetation. Under the combined effect of vegetation and bend curvature, the velocities in the vegetation area are much smaller than those in the non-vegetation area. In the outer bank vegetation area, the vertical profile of velocity is much more uniform over the flow depth due to the reason that vegetation confines the bed wall roughness in a small area close to the bed, and no clear circulation is found in this area. In the non-vegetation area, the maximal velocity gradually shifts to the flume bed as heading downstream and a clear clockwise circulation is developed in curved reach. It can also be seen that there is a large mass and momentum exchange between the vegetation and non-vegetation area in the whole process. In addition, the small value of the wall shear stresses in the vegetation area shows that vegetation can protect the river bank from scour and erosion effectively. However, at the same time, the sediment is easily to be deposited in the outer vegetation area.

Increasing concentrations of selenium oxoanions in the environment are placing many animals at risk for reproduction failure and deformities. The understanding of binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions to iron and manganese based oxide minerals could lead to enhanced understanding of selenium mobility in the environment. In this study, the binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions, selenite and selenate, to non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe3O4, Mn3O4, and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials were investigated through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy studies revealed the oxidation state of selenite and selenate remains the same after binding occurs to all nanomaterials in pH 2, 4, or 6 environments. The binding modes of selenite and selenate were determined to be bidentate binuclear through use of Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and were independent of nanomaterials, synthetic technique, and pH.

Kinta district, in Perak sate of Malaysia is one of the richest districts that rose from tin mining production and is located strategically in the middle of Perak. The physical evidence of this former tin mining landscape which surrounds Kinta offers a narrative about this past mining history. The glorious years of Kinta occurred during the ‘tin rush’ era between 1884 until 1895. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mining heritage significance in Kinta district. A critical literature review and field surveys are used as the initial identification of significance places having regard to the remaining surviving evidence that can be promoted for conservation.

This paper demonstrates a approach to design the field programmable CMOS operational transresistance amplifier. All the MOSFETs are replaced by the floating gate MOSFETs to make the OTRA design programmable. The charge at the floating gate can be programmed after fabrication, based on Hot-e-injection and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling techniques. This programming charge at floating gate results in threshold voltage variation in these MOSFETs, which in turn can modify circuit's specifications. The high frequency small signal analysis of the design is prepared and specifications of the design are rederived in terms of threshold voltages of the MOSFETs. The expressions of output voltage, transresistance, input impedance, output impedance and offsets are derived in terms of threshold voltages of respective MOSFETs. In order to achieve circuits AC and DC characteristics, the circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-spice 0.35um CMOS process. The simulated results shows 13 bit programming precision in transresistance, input impedance, output impedance, Temperature stability and dc offsets with respect to threshold voltage of respective MOSFETs.

Food and agricultural production are among the most sensitive fields of application of nanotechnology. It is predicted that nanotechnology will revolutionize agriculture through new tools for disease treatment and detection, smart delivery systems, sensors, and better management devices. However, the rapid development of nanotechnology could release a huge amount of engineered nanoparticles, which may cause adverse effects on edible plants. In this review article the authors analyzed the most recent literature on the application of nanotechnology in agriculture, including nanofertilizers, nanosensors, crop protection, pollution control, waste management, and pesticide detection. The negative effects caused by nanoparticles on edible plants are also discussed. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Major components of bamboo are solid hydrocarbons in the forms of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignins, and pentosan. The abundance of hydrocarbons indicates the potential of bamboo to be an excellent raw material to produce hydrogen. In this study, 1-yr-old ma bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiforus) was liquefed with polyethylene glycol and then treated with plasma steam reforming to produce hydrogen. Productivity levels of hydrogen at different bamboo concentrations and pyrolysis temperatures were experimentally and theoretically studied. The liquefaction and pyrolysis apparatuses were hence optimized. A maximum productivity occurred at a weight ratio of 1:10 of ma bamboo to water and a pyrolysis temperature of 800°C by plasma treatment.

With the increasing grid penetration levels of wind power, there is an increasing need to study both the power control systems and the regulatory aspects associated with frequency control capabilities of wind power plants at various levels (turbine, wind farm and power system levels). This is especially very important in the United States with a goal of achieving 20% nation's electricity from wind energy by 2030. This paper provides observations and challenges identified with wind energy integration with respect to active power control strategies used in implementing frequency regulation at various levels. This paper also discusses the current and future aspects of market regulation of frequency responsive services offered by converter based variable generation technologies and the need for an appropriate utility market structure in order to provide settlements for these capabilities.

Traditional numerical models for shallow flows are mostly based on the Saint-Venant equations derived for horizontal or gentle slopes, which however are not generally justified for flows over steep slopes. This paper presents a modified shallow water hydrodynamic model that is generally applicable for flows over arbitrary slopes. It is based on the well-balanced shallow water equations in a topography-linked coordinate system, which fully incorporate the effects of the bottom slope. The governing equations are solved using a second-order accurate Godunov-type finite volume method in conjunction with the HLLC approximate Riemann solver. It is applied to model dam-break flow and roll waves over inclined and fixed beds. In steep-slope cases, the results of the modified model agree with analytical solutions considerably better than the traditional model, although both models produce essentially the same results that match analytical solutions well when the slope is sufficiently gentle. This suggests that the traditional model fails for flows over steep slopes, and thus the application of the modified model is warranted.
