Increasing concentrations of selenium oxoanions in the environment are placing many animals at risk for reproduction failure and deformities. The understanding of binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions to iron and manganese based oxide minerals could lead to enhanced understanding of selenium mobility in the environment. In this study, the binding mechanisms of selenium oxoanions, selenite and selenate, to non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe3O4, Mn3O4. and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials were investigated through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy studies revealed the oxidation state of selenite and selenate remains the same after binding occurs to all nanomaterials in pH 2, 4, or 6 environments. The binding modes of selenite and selenate were determined to be bidentate binuclear through use of Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and were independent of nanomaterials, synthetic technique, and pH. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

According to Jossient, interesting characteristics of breast tissues mostly lie above 1MHz [1];therefore a wideband excitation source covering higher frequencies (i.e. above 1MHz) is required. The main objective of this research is to establish a feasible bandwidth envelope that can be used to design a constant EIM voltage source over a wide bandwidth with low output impedance for practical implementation. An excitation source is one of the major components in bio-impedance measurement systems. In any bio-impedance measurement system the excitation source can be achieved either by injecting current and measuring the resulting voltages, or by applying voltages and measuring the current developed. This paper describes three voltage source architectures and based on their bandwidth comparison;a differential voltage controlled voltage source (VCVS) is proposed, which can be used over a wide bandwidth (>15MHz). This paper describes the performance of the designed EIM voltage source for different load conditions and load capacitances reporting signal-to-noise ratio of approx 90dB at 10MHz frequency, signal phase and maximum of 4.75kΩ source output impedance at 10MHz. Optimum data obtained using Pspice? is used to demonstrate the highbandwidth performance of the source.

作者： John Maeda Steven Heller Tim Hoover Has been a design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since January 2014 helping entrepreneurs and portfolio companies to build design into their company cultures. He served as the president of Rhode Island School of Design for six years through 2013 and also served as an associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab. Maeda has been a practicing designer since 1990 and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation. He serves on the boards of several corporations including Sonos and Wieden + Kennedy and is chair of eBay's Design Advisory Board. His four published books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda is the recipient of a variety of international awards for his creative work including induction into the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. In 2001 he received the White House National Design Award in 2002 he received the Mainichi Design Prize in Japan and in 2005 he was awarded the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany. Maeda earned a BS and an MS from MIT in computer science and electrical engineering. He received a PhD in design science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan as well as an MBA from Arizona State University. Co‐chair and co‐founder of the MFA Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the art director of The New York Times Book Review and now writes the VISUALS column for the NYTBR. He also writes “The Daily Heller” at *** a weekly online design column for Atlantic magazine. He is author co‐author and editor of more than 165 books on the history and practice of graphic design illustration and satiric art. His forthcoming books include 100 Classic Graphic Design Magazines (Laurence King Publishers) and Raw Data: The Process Behind Information Graphics (Thames + Hudson). Subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) often have trouble with ambulation. Some research has shown that aux- iliary cueing in the form of vision, audio, or vibration can improve the gait of PD patients. We have developed a new vibratory feedback shoe, known as the PDShoe, which builds on existing research. This device can modulate both frequency and amplitude of feedback for the wearer. It is untethered, and thus can be worn during daily activities. Pressure and tactor status data are transmitted wirelessly over a personal area network to a notebook computer. This computer can also control the tactor actuation and stimulation frequency. This paper describes the details of design and construction of the PDShoe. A preliminary evaluation with four Parkinson's disease subjects and two healthy subjects is included to show the usability of the device.

The newsvendor problem is a fundamental building block for inventory management with a stochastic demand. The classic newsvendor problem focuses on maximizing the expected profit or minimizing the expected cost when she faces myopic customers. However, it ignores the customer's bargain-hunting behavior and risk preference measure of newsvendor. As a result, we carry out the rational expectation (RE) equilibrium analysis for risk-averse newsvendor facing forward-looking customers who anticipate future sales and choose purchasing timing to maximize their expected surplus. We propose the equilibrium price and quantity for the case where demand follows the uniform distribution and utility is power function. We identify the impact the system parameters on the RE equilibrium decisions for this specific situation.

Bridges as key elements in the lifeline of each country or urban transportation play a fundamental role economically, politically and militarily. The possibility of severe damage to bridges that are subjected to earthquake leads to the necessity of seismic evaluation of existing bridges, particularly those which have been either designed regardless of earthquake effects or according to moderate earthquake-resistant consideration. The assessment of safety and stability of these bridges while passing increasingly traffic is of high importance in their seismic performance. In this study, an urban steel bridge in metropolitan Tehran which is accounted for as an important structure in the city transportation is studied using nonlinear static procedure at two hazard levels. The hazard levels were obtained by the use of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). Three-dimensional model of the mentioned bridge is developed and analyzed using nonlinear static procedure (NSP) thus its seismic performance is evaluated accordingly. The results show the vulnerability of this steel bridge during earthquake and the necessity of retrofitting for improving its seismic behaviour.

In this paper, we study the coordination of a decentralized supply chain in which a single manufacturer is selling a perishable product to a single retailer facing uncertain demand affected by her adverting expenditure and selling price and having shortage penalty. When the retailer behaving as a newsvendor faces stochastic advertisement and price sensitive demands, she has to make the advertising, pricing and ordering decisions before the demand is realized. We first establish the centralized model and prove that the supply chain can not be coordinated with the revenue sharing contract. We then show quantity discount contract can coordinate the supply chain and testify the special quantity discount contract can not coordinate our supply chain setting that was used in [8] to coordinate the newsvendor with demand dependent on price and effort. Finally, we prove the revenue and loss sharing contract presented in [12] coordinate the newsvendor with demand dependent on advertising expenditure also can not coordinate our supply chain setting and propose a contract called improved revenue and loss sharing contract which coordinates the decentralized supply chain.

The NSF ADVANCE program represents one of the most far reaching gender equity efforts implemented jointly by a government agency and institutions of higher education. Focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, in 2001, an inaugural group of universities received NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation (IT) awards to increase the representation of women faculty in science and engineering. To date, a total of five cohorts of 44 institutions of higher education have received the award, and the 19 institutions comprising the 2001 and 2003 cohorts have completed their five-year projects. In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of recruitment programs and practices developed by Cohort 1 ADVANCE institutions in an effort to increase the representation of women faculty. Towards this end, we focus on changes in the number of women faculty at the assistant professor rank in colleges of engineering at seven Cohort 1 ADVANCE institutions. We examine performance during both the 2001-2006 grant period, and the sustained impact of ADVANCE by examining the trajectory of colleges of engineering up through the three years following receipt of the grant (2006-2009). Using these changes as an indicator of the effectiveness of recruitment programs, we determine which colleges of engineering associated with Cohort 1 universities show stronger performance. Subsequently, we compare the key components of recruitment programs initiated at both stronger and weaker performing institutions during the ADVANCE grant period. Our analysis of changes during the grant period reveals that four out of seven colleges of engineering added between four and seven women to the faculty at the assistant professor rank, and two institutions added one female assistant professor each. Georgia Tech's College of engineering, where the number of female assistant professors fell by four, constitutes an exception to this overall trend. A longer term view (2001-2009) reveals

Time Domain Response Analysis of Barge Floater Supporting an Offshore Wind Turbine

Wind energy is a reliable source of sustainable power generation and has been an active area of research globally to economically harness the energy for human use. Reliable source of wind energy pushed the engineers to install wind turbines near and far off the coasts. In shallow water upto 100 m, fixed structures like tripods, jackets, monopiles and gravity base are functionally and economically feasible. In deep waters, a floating substructure can be more economical for offshore wind turbine. In this study a barge type floater of different aspect ratios from 0.4 to 1.0 is investigated for its performance under wave and wind loading. All these floaters were designed with a defined transverse metacentric height (GM) equal to 1.0 m and the hydrodynamic analysis is carried out using WAMIT. The barge with aspect ratio B/L = 1.0 is found to have lowest pitch RAO. The time domain surge, heave and pitch response for this barge has been obtained using Integro-differential equation of motion and the statistical response characteristics are compared for two different cases of excitation namely, wave excitation alone and combined wave and wind excitation. Statistics of surge, heave and pitch responses are obtained for three different seas states and for two different wave heading angles.

In this paper, we tried to identify a set of additional criteria that can help Project Owners to making good selections of foreign firms that can provide better master management process of large engineering projects in a high complex environment. The results of this research are determined on the basis of a content analysis of summary reports prepared by the various partners involved in a mega-highway project in Algeria, and on the basis of discussing with managers of this important infrastructure which was built by Chinese and Japanese companies, and controlled by mixed technical offices (French, Canadian and Algerian).
