Numerous genome projects have produced a large and ever increasing amount of genomic sequence data. However, the biological functions of many proteins encoded by the sequences remain unknown. Protein function annotation and prediction become an essential and challenging task of post-genomic research. In this paper, we present an automated protein function prediction system based on a set of proteins of known biological functions. The functions of the proteins are characterized with gene ontology (GO) annotations. The prediction system uses a novel measure to calculate the pair-wise overall similarity between protein sequences. The protein function prediction is performed based on the GO annotations of similar sequences using a weighted k-nearest neighbor method. We show the prediction accuracies obtained using the model organism yeast (Sacchyromyces cerevisiae). The results indicate that the weighted k-nearest neighbor method significantly outperforms the regular k-nearest neighbor method for protein molecular function prediction. © 2007 IEEE.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to report the main learning outcomes of the Lake Superior Rural Cancer Care Project. Description of Study: The authors designed and tested a multimodal intervention directed at rural providers and their healthcare systems in a large rural area in the north central United States. An experimental design was used to randomize rural providers at the group level. The intervention consisted of providing increased education for rural providers with a number of approaches, including the use of clinical opinion leaders. The main outcome of the intervention was knowledge scoring on discipline-specific cancer management tests. Results: Knowledge scores for providers in the experimental group significantly increased from pretest to post-test: 66 to 79 for physicians (and physician assistants) ( P = .02); 58 to 71 for nurses ( P = .01); and 54 to 64 for pharmacists ( P = .01). At post-test, participating providers in the experimental group performed significantly better on the knowledge tests ( P < .01) than those in the control groups. Clinical Implications: This study may be the first to test educational interventions to improve rural providers' knowledge about cancer practice using an experimental design. The intervention may possibly change provider practice behaviors and, thus, patient outcomes, data that will be reported in a future issue. Finally, this educational intervention may prove useful for providers in other rural areas.

At present, cycle tracks have been constructed or are under planning/construction in different locations throughout the New Territories in Hong Kong. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) proposed to connect scattered cycle tracks in various districts in the New Territories to form New Territories Cycle Track Networks with a view to enhancing recreational and tourism values. Upon completion, there will be a continuous cycle track connecting Shatin, Tai Po, Fanling/Sheung Shui, Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun together with necessary supporting facilities. In view of the considerable length and costs involved for the proposed cycle track network, it has been proposed to implement the network in two phases, the priority phase and the long term phase. This paper will focus on four aspects: 1) the review, planning, design and construction considerations for the proposed cycle track network;2) the application of environmental friendly materials;3) the contract strategy of cycle track network with supporting facilities;and, last but not the least, 4) the project impacts to the social, economic and sustainable development.

Yakubovich was born in Novosibirsk Russia in 1926. he entered Moscow University in 1946 and graduated in 1949. he received the Candidate of Science degree (Ph.D.) in 1953 and the Doctor of Science degree in 1959 from Leningrad University. In 1959 he joined the Leningrad University and he has remained since then. He is the author of more than 270 papers and a coauthor of seven books in different areas of applied mathematics and control theory. he has worked in parametric resonance theory in the theory of stability of nonlinear systems and in optimization theory. Dr. Yakubovich has served on many scientific committees and editorial boards. he is a member of several scientific socienties in Russia. He was awarded the Norbert Wiener Prize (1991) a prize from the international editorial company “Nauka” for best publication in its journals (1995) and the IEEE Control Systems Award (1996). Since 1991 he has been a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dept. of Control Engineering Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan. Shigeki Nakaura received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Control Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1995 and 1997 respectively. In many mechanical systems, the tracking control is one of the most important issues. Therefore for the unstable system subject to actuator saturation, the domain of the initial states corresponding to an arbitrary reference signal, within which tracking condition can be achieved, is interesting to be considered. In this paper, an approximate tracking domain is derived analytically. First in Theorem 1, for simple case, it is constructed by using the partial Lyapunov function and the absolute stability theory. In the following Theorems 2 and 3, a new idea is used to obtain larger domains. Finally in the last section, a simple numerical example is given.

This paper presents a biomechanical model of the semicircular canals of the human vestibular system and the design of a 3D biomimetic structure that mimics the biological system. Starting from anatomical and physiological data, mechanical and structural parameters have been identified and a mathematical model has been formulated, by considering the semicircular organ as a canal filled by a liquid. The mathematical and mechanical models were used to simulate the behavior of the semicircular canals under known conditions of angular velocity and acceleration along three axes. Furthermore, the membrane inside the semicircular canals was simulated to understand what the mechanical properties of the membrane are and if polymeric materials can reproduce the mechanical characteristics of the biological organ. The results obtained from the model allow to design a biomimetic organ, as a part of a biomimetic vestibular system, by following this biomechatronic approach

Time series forecasting has been widely used to support decision making, in this context a highly accurate prediction is essential to ensure the quality of the decisions. Ensembles of machines currently receive a lot of attention; they combine predictions from different forecasting methods as a procedure to improve the accuracy. This paper explores genetic programming and boosting technique to obtain an ensemble of regressors and proposes a new formula for the final hypothesis. This new formula is based on the correlation coefficient instead of the geometric median used by the boosting algorithm. To validate this method, experiments were performed, the mean squared error (MSE) has been used to compare the accuracy of the proposed method against the results obtained by GP, GP using a boosting technique and the traditional statistical methodology (ARMA). The results show advantages in the use of the proposed approach

Fabrication of bulk heterojunctions, with well-ordered arrays of organic and inorganic semiconductors, is a promising route to increasing the efficiency of polymer photovoltaic cells. In such structures, almost all excitons formed are close enough to the organic-inorganic interface to be dissociated by electron transfer, all charge carriers have an uninterrupted pathway to the electrodes, and polymer chains are aligned to increase their charge carrier mobility. Furthermore, ordered structures interesting because they are relatively easy to model. Studies of ordered cells are likely to lead to better design rules for making efficient photovoltaic cells.
