This paper presents a biomechanical model of the semicircular canals of the human vestibular system and the design of a 3D biomimetic structure that mimics the biological system. Starting from anatomical and physiological data, mechanical and structural parameters have been identified and a mathematical model has been formulated, by considering the semicircular organ as a canal filled by a liquid. The mathematical and mechanical models were used to simulate the behavior of the semicircular canals under known conditions of angular velocity and acceleration along three axes. Furthermore, the membrane inside the semicircular canals was simulated to understand what the mechanical properties of the membrane are and if polymeric materials can reproduce the mechanical characteristics of the biological organ. The results obtained from the model allow to design a biomimetic organ, as a part of a biomimetic vestibular system, by following this biomechatronic approach

Time series forecasting has been widely used to support decision making, in this context a highly accurate prediction is essential to ensure the quality of the decisions. Ensembles of machines currently receive a lot of attention; they combine predictions from different forecasting methods as a procedure to improve the accuracy. This paper explores genetic programming and boosting technique to obtain an ensemble of regressors and proposes a new formula for the final hypothesis. This new formula is based on the correlation coefficient instead of the geometric median used by the boosting algorithm. To validate this method, experiments were performed, the mean squared error (MSE) has been used to compare the accuracy of the proposed method against the results obtained by GP, GP using a boosting technique and the traditional statistical methodology (ARMA). The results show advantages in the use of the proposed approach

Fabrication of bulk heterojunctions, with well-ordered arrays of organic and inorganic semiconductors, is a promising route to increasing the efficiency of polymer photovoltaic cells. In such structures, almost all excitons formed are close enough to the organic-inorganic interface to be dissociated by electron transfer, all charge carriers have an uninterrupted pathway to the electrodes, and polymer chains are aligned to increase their charge carrier mobility. Furthermore, ordered structures interesting because they are relatively easy to model. Studies of ordered cells are likely to lead to better design rules for making efficient photovoltaic cells.

In this article, we present a neurobiologically inspired multinetwork architecture based on knowledge of cortico-cortical connectivity and its application on an anthropomorphic head-arm-hand robotic system to provide reach-and-grasp kinematics based on multimodal sensorimotor learning. The system incorporates artificial neural network modules (matching units) trained by the locally weighted projection regression (LWPR) algorithm that enables progressive learning from simple to more complex sensorimotor tasks. We report the actual performance of the system by comparing the simulation with the experimental results obtained by the implementation on the real world artefact

With the widespread computerization in business, government, and science, the efficient and effective discovery of interesting information from large databases becomes essential. Previous studies on data mining have been focused on the discovery of knowledge at single conceptual level, either at the primitive level or at a rather high conceptual level. This paper presents an algorithm based on the AFOPT algorithm for multilevel databases that uses the benefits of multileveled databases, by using the information gained by studying items from one concept level for the study of the items from the following concept levels.

In this paper we build on previous work by the authors on spacecraft formation motion design for fuel-image optimality by Hussein, Scheeres and Hyland (2005). Previous results indicate a tradeoff between image quality and fuel expenditure by I. I. Hussein et al. (2005). In this paper we state results relating image quality to the trajectory of a sparse system of TV telescopes. This relationship is used to define a cost function for an optimal control problem including imaging and fuel performance measures. As in the work of I. I. Hussein et al. (2005), we derive the necessary optimality conditions for a generic multi-spacecraft formation and specialize them to a two-spacecraft formation. In this paper, image quality is imposed as a terminal constraint as opposed to being the object of minimization as in I. I. Hussein et al. (2005). We show that the optimal solution retains its symmetric properties and uniformity of the motion of its center of mass developed in I. I. Hussein et al. (2005). While the control law we derive here is much simpler than that found in Hussein, Scheeres and Hyland (2005), the formulation we propose results in a "speed control" effect that is desirable for uniform coverage of the frequency domain. Simulation results are provided to show the local behavior of the resulting control law. Finally, we prove optimality of a class of circular Earth-orbiting constellations introduced earlier in the literature. This work is fundamental to current and future work related to motion path planning of separated spacecraft interferometric missions used for the imaging of astronomical targets

The research in market segmentation includes two main parts. We first focus on discussing the market segmentation problem by applying clustering technique in data mining discipline. The partition of market is based on users' preference data and not on the commonly used one, users' attribute data. In that way, the definition of distance between two customers by their preference to a set of specified competing products is given. In stead of starting from scratch, the self-organization feature map is adopted as a basic clustering framework. In order to process the preference data, some necessary modifications are made. Both theoretic analysis and practical experiment are presented in this paper, which make us confident of that the algorithm we proposed has excellent performance and could discover the potential clustering patterns in the complex datasets. The second part is focus on displaying market segmentation structure. We apply visualization technique to representing the market structure clearly in a two dimensional plane so that the marketers can make their market strategies easier. The two main parts are organized as an integrated approach. Such an approach includes three core steps: preference data collecting step, preference data clustering step by SOM neural networks and visualization step by ideal point model. There are three main advantages of the approach: firstly, the approach is based on well-defined mathematic models and can be supported by a series of numeral methods. Secondly, it does not have to face the tough market variable selection problem because we focus on preference data, not on evaluators' attribute data (demographic or geographic data etc.). Finally, the approach can produce multi-scale view of market segmentation results. The experiments show that the approach yields meaningful results and is comparable and complemented to the most general ones.

Computer-integrated design system has become the future trend for CAD applications. In this paper, a structural design process model and building product model are introduced. Based on these two models, a computer- integrated software framework is proposed. The framework, enabling a flexible and scalable software environment, becomes a part of an integrated prototype system for structural design. In the integrated environment, different CAD tools can be incorporated into the system as individual components. Thus, the system is capable to support design automation and collaboration design among the team members of a build project.

NIR spectroscopy appears as a rapid, convenient and simple nondestructive technique that can be useful to quantify several soil properties. This method was used to estimate soil Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Organic Matter (OM) content in a loamy mixed active thermic aerie endoqualfs soil of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou County, China. A total of 165 soil samples were taken from the field, 135 samples spectra were used during the calibration and cross-validation stage. Thirty samples spectra were used to predict N, P, K and OM concentration. NIR spectra and constituents were related using partial least square regression (PLSR) technique.
