Investigation on the Dynamic Response Property in a Big and High Air-conditioned Space

This paper reports the investigation results of the dynamic response property in a big and high air-conditioned space using numerical simulation and experiment. The space is 30m×30m×20m (length × width × height), whose air temperature is kept constant. The best air distribution mode is obtained by steady state numerical analyses. The time lag, time constant and scale factor of the air-conditioned space of normal air supply and heat source variation are investigated by detailed 3-D transient state numerical analyses. Finally the results of the numerical analyses are verified by experiments with good agreement.

Vietnam is a rapidly developing nation in Southeast Asia and has adopted and implemented mandatory legislation for Environmental Assessment since 1994. This review analyses the successes and failures of this legislation and investigates the role of strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in the future development of the country. Along with many other developing nations in the region, the implementation of existing environmental legislation is generally weak in Vietnam and increased efforts to educate, train and motivate responsible personnel in the government, non-government and private development sectors is a continuing requirement. Many overseas agencies are currently financing projects to meet these current needs and to develop sustainable development policy within the natural resource management and planning framework in the country. It is concluded that Vietnam does have a good potential for an increased application of SEA, but success will depend on the effective conversion of theory into practice.

Future USN aircraft carrier analysis of alternatives

作者： Raber, JD Perin, DA Mr. James D. Raber:received a master of science degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967. Since 1967 he has worked for the Navy Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and predecessor organizations in the area of early stage design of naval ships. Among the major USN programs he has supported are the FFG 7 and DDG 51. In the late ‘70s he was the NAVSEA representative to the CNO DDX Study Group which established the general requirements for the DDG 51 class. He has been active in international technical exchange programs for which he was awarded membership in the National Order of Merit by the Republic of France in 1992. Since early 1996 he has been the NAVSEA Ship Concept Team Leader for what is now the CVNX Program. Dr. David A. Perin:received a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1971. He joined the Center for Naval Analyses in 1973 where he has led a wide variety of studies on naval warfare. From 1985 to 1987 he served as the CNA representative on the staff of Commander Striking Fleet Atlantic for which he was awarded a Defense Distinguished Service Medal. During the 1990s he has led formal analysis of alternatives for the LPD-17 F/A-18E/F and CVX. Currently he is the Director of the JCC(X) Analysis of Alternatives.

In March 1996, the Department of Defense established a new program, then known as CVX, to develop a new class of aircraft carrier that would eventually replace the Nimitz class. The first step in the concept develop was exploring a wide range of alternative design concepts in a formal study known as an Analysis of Alternatives (AOA), which assessed their cost and operational effectiveness. About 70 total ship studies were developed to explore the range of design features, including airwing size and type, propulsion type, ship mobility performance, and a variety of survivability features. The AOA also assessed the performance of and total ownership cost of a large number of potential subsystem technologies. This paper summarizes the total ship studies developed for the AOA describes the ship system performance and total ownership cost of these alternatives, and discusses the rationale for determining some of the primary system requirements. Thus, the paper will provide insight into the Navy's intentions for system requirements and features to be incorporated into the U.S. Navy's future aircraft carriers.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

The third part of a comprehensive six‐part series on a promising and growing approach to mechanical attachment amenable to automation. Integral snap‐fit attachment design has traditionally focused almost exclusively on the individual features that actually accomplish locking between parts of an assembly (e.g. cantilever hooks, bayonet‐fingers, compressive hooks, traps, and others). The placement and orientation of features that facilitate or enhance engagement or eliminate unwanted translation, rotation or vibration, i.e. locating features and enhancements, are rarely considered. Here, describes integral features classified as locks, locators or enhancements. More importantly, presents a systematic six‐step approach or methodology to guide designers at the higher, attachment or conceptual design level (as opposed to lower, feature or detail design level).

A survey is given of available data on the effects of air density upon pre-discharges and sparkover for nonuniform field geometries under a variety of voltage waveshapes of both polarities. Semi-empirical relationships describing the trends of the experimental data are presented. The correction methods set up by the IEC are reviewed and some emphasis has been given to the need to distinguish between the separate influences of pressure and temperature in the overall air-density correction factors. The limits of applicability for density correction are also discussed. Finally, a generalised semi-empirical equation taking into account the main atmospheric variations is proposed. This is shown to offer a good accuracy for the calculation of sparkover voltages over a wider density range than has been hitherto been possible.

In 1995 he obtained the MSc degree in Information Technology from the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research Alexandria University. His current research interests include ICAL hypermedia and automatic programming.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

Describes the FAST concurrent engineering (CE) implementationmethodology that has been developed by the authors at CranfieldUniversity, through research and consultancy activities. The methodologyis presented in a paper‐based work‐book and describes three stages acompany could proceed through to take it from an initial interest in CE,to the successful implementation of a pilot CE product developmentproject and then expansion. The focus is on the introduction ofmultidisciplinary product development teams as the main vehicle forradically improving product development performance.

From January to August 1987 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Electrical Engineering Department University of Manitoba. He joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi in 1987 as an assistant professor and advanced to the rank of associate professor in 1991. His professional interests include microstrip transmission lines and antennas scattering and diffraction numerical techniques and computer applications for electromagnetic education. Dr. Elsherbeni is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Commission B of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). His honorary memberships include the Electromagnetics Academy and the Scientific Sigma Xi Society. Mark D. Tew:obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering with highest honors in 1971 and an MS in Electrical Engineering in 1973 from the University of Mississippi. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a TRW Doctoral Fellow and received the PhD in 1979. He joined the University of Mississippi in 1979 and was appointed associate professor in 1986. His interests lie in improving undergraduate laboratories through the incorporation of computer-aided data acquisition and introduction of multimedia. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of several honorary societies.

This article presents efforts to improve the presentation of material in high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories using multimedia technology. A crowded undergraduate curriculum leaves little time to dwell on difficult concepts in these areas of study, yet the laboratory experience is enhanced by greater understanding. A moderate or small-sized electrical engineering department is well suited for a one-on-one approach to teaching where close faculty—student interaction serves to fill many student needs. Even in this environment, better visualization tools may increase learning by reinforcing material introduced in the classroom. This project uses multimedia to enhance instruction and presentation in the high frequency, microwave, and electronics laboratories.
