This report is an attempt to compare the advantages and disadvantages of franchising which is one of the most known business model. To start with, the swot analysis is defined. Then, the advantages of Franchising are explained. These are brand recognition, low risk to failure, easy set up, ready customer portfolio and easy to find financial support. In the third part, the disadvantages of franchising are explained that are strict rules, dependency and high cost. Finally, in the last part, the advantages over disadvantages of franchising are analyzed and it is concluded that the franchising is more advantageous.

The civil engineering community is a leader in national and international efforts toward sustainability, recycling, and reuse of materials. For example, asphalt is the most recycled material on earth, which is approximately 13 times the newsprint recycling and 27 times the glass bottles recycling. Recycled materials that have been used as borrow materials for embankment construction and retaining wall backfills include recycled asphalt, recycled concrete, tire-derived aggregates (TDA), blast furnace slag, steel slag, coal bottom ash/ boiler slag, flue gas desulfurization scrubber, cullet glass, and roofing shingles. Some of these recycled materials offer potential environmental, technical, and economical benefits for retaining-wall applications. For example, when compared with natural soils, many may offer the advantage of reduced lateral earth pressures and foundation settlement due to smaller unit weight and potentially higher drainage capacity. However, implicit in some of these options is the applicability of conventional soil mechanical principles in the design and technical assessment. In this paper we present experimental data from laboratory and model tests (centrifuge and model retaining walls) that highlight the challenges involved when trying to predict lateral pressures induced by a recycled wall backfill composed of tire derived aggregate. A key difference of this type of granular material is related to the nature of their particles, which are deformable and can exhibit viscous behavior. The experimental results are compared with classical lateral earth theories for active, passive, and at-rest conditions. The manuscript also includes an assessment of the time dependency of the at-rest pressures induced by TDA backfill. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Tradeoff studies are a critical tool to provide information to support decision making for discipline engineers, systems engineers, and program managers throughout the system life cycle. Unfortunately, the quality of trade studies is inconsistent between organizations and within organizations. This paper reports on part of an INCOSE effort to improve tradeoff studies and discusses a proposed INCOSE Decision Management Process aligned with ISO/IEC 15288. The proposed process discussed in this paper integrates decision analysis best practices with systems engineering activities to create a baseline from which future papers can explore possible innovations to further enhance tradeoff study quality. The process enables enterprises to develop an in-depth understanding of the complex relationship between requirements, the design choices made to address each requirement, and the system level consequences of the sum of design choices across the full set of performance requirements as well as other elements of stakeholder value to include cost and schedule. Through data visualization techniques, decision makers can quickly understand and crisply communicate a complex trade-space and converge on recommendations that are robust in the presence of uncertainty. © 2014 The Authors.

In this paper, three dimensional impact angle control guidance laws are proposed for stationary targets. Unlike the usual approach of decoupling the engagement dynamics into two mutually orthogonal 2-dimensional planes, the guidance laws are derived using the coupled dynamics. These guidance laws are designed using principles of conventional as well as nonsingular terminal sliding mode control theory. The guidance law based on nonsingular terminal sliding mode guarantees finite time convergence of interceptor to the desired impact angle. In order to derive the guidance laws, multi-dimension switching surfaces are used. The stability of the system, with selected switching surfaces, is demonstrated using Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical simulation results are presented to validate the proposed guidance law.

Cloud computing services are rapidly gaining popularity with more and more businesses actively migrating to the cloud, and many new cloud providers emerging. In such circumstances, there is a need for a market platform that allows for automated trading of cloud services between numerous independent users. Therefore, in this paper we propose Smart Cloud Marketplace (SCM) as a platform for trading cloud services based on intelligent agent technology. Software agents represent the cloud service consumers and providers in the marketplace, and make intelligent decisions on their behalf. The platform enables participants to use different trading policies in order to automate and improve the efficiency of resource trading. Moreover, SCM supports multimarket trading, where different market mechanisms can be deployed. We have used the SCM platform to test different market mechanisms developed within our research group. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that Smart Cloud Marketplace is a useful, flexible and effective platform for conducting experiments and ultimately for trading cloud services.

The article shows the methods of constructing autonomous decentralized energy systems from solar modules. It shows the operation of up DC inverter. It demonstrates the effectiveness of DC inverters with varying structure. The system has high efficiency and low level of conductive impulse noise and at the same time the system is practically feasible. Electrical processes have been analyzed to determine the characteristics of operating modes of the main circuit elements. Recommendations on using the converters have been given.

The article discusses business model design and the modeling methods used by designers to combine strategy and design concepts when creating a business model. Topics include how the profit formula, or price-model, factor into social services business model designs such as the model for Frog, a community health services project through UNICEF, business model considerations for electronic commerce (e-commerce) business, and how design business models incorporate computer-aided sketches of design solutions.

The REELCOOP project funded by the European Union aims at developing and demonstrating three small scale solar electricity generating units with two of them using thermal power cycles and one using PV. The system described here includes parabolic trough collectors and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), enhanced by a biogas boiler and a thermal storage. With a net aperture area of 979 m 2 the solar field supplies saturated steam at 170 ̊C to the ORC which produces a nominal electrical output of 60 kW. Excess thermal energy will be stored in a novel vertical spiral plate heat exchanger with phase change material. Additionally a biogas boiler can deliver steam at the desired pressure to the ORC. Detailed planning of the hydraulic circuit is ongoing. Several components, mainly solar field and ORC, are under fabrication so that their construction on-site is expected for next winter, followed by commissioning envisaged for March 2015.

Analytical Modeling of Effective Diffusivity in Micro-Porous Layers

The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) used in polymer electrolyte fuel cells consists of a membrane, two electrodes (anode and cathode), and two gas diffusion layers (GDLs). The GDL is responsible for providing the pathways for transport of the reactant gases from the flow channels to the catalyst layers. Hence, the mass transport resistance of this layer should be minimized for high performance operation. The GDL is typically a dual-layer carbon-based material composed of a macro-porous substrate, which usually contains carbon fibers, binder, and PTFE, and a thin delicate micro-porous layer (MPL), which is usually made of carbon nano-particles and PTFE. Spherical carbon nano-particles of 20-100 nm in diameter construct the complex structure of MPL. Small pore sizes and highly hydrophobic characteristics are the two main specifications of the MPL. The effective diffusivity of the MPL is a key property in determining the fuel cell performance. However, since the MPL is a recently developed material, the number of published works with focus on its diffusivity is limited. Measuring the MPL diffusivity is a challenging task since the MPL needs a physical support and cannot be analyzed as a separate object. Similar to its measurements, modeling the MPL diffusivity is also a difficult task (Nanjundappa et al., Electrochimica Acta 110:349-57), since it involves the reconstruction of the complex structure numerically and solving the diffusion equations in the nano-scale pores where the continuum assumption may be invalid and Knudsen diffusion may prevail. Usually, complex numerical algorithms are employed to reconstruct a small portion of the MPL. This step is followed by a computationally intensive stage to solve the diffusion equations inside the void spaces of the reconstructed domain. Although this approach leads to reliable and accurate results, an analytical relationship that correlates certain design parameters to the MPL diffusivity could be helpful. A fully analyti

Hydraulic transients occur during a change from one equilibrium state to another, for example, in flows. The pipeline project should provide the head and discharge in any operating states, e.g., sudden valve opening or closure. Among the various numerical approaches for the calculation of pipeline transients, the method of characteristics (MOC) is advantageous This study aims to present a hydraulic transitory study as MOC applications for solving the Saint- Venant equations in two case studies: 1) in a penstock of a small hydropower system as a simple pipeline in the case of valve-closure in the downstream boundary with a reservoir in the upstream boundary; and 2) for discharge propagation into a channel by velocity and depth of the flow channel along space evaluation. The main data for the first case study consisted of a design head that is 182 meters, a turbine discharge of 13.82 m3/s, a diameter of 4 meters and length pipe (penstock) of 2,152.50 meters. Regarding the second case study, the entry hydrogram was given to a rectangular channel with a width of 6.1 meters, length of 3,048 meters, slope of 0.0016 meters, and exhibited uniform flow with nominal depth of 2.44 meters. The characteristic curve of the discharge in the downstream extremity is Q = 158.(y – 3.25)32. The proposed methodology by Chaudry [5] concerning the development of hydrodynamic models was used. The obtained results for first case study showed that the simulated values for valve pressure while varying turning the valve between 4 and 12 seconds results in maximum values of pressures that oscillated between 219.97mca and 212.39 mca (4s) and 196.42mca and 190.86mca (12s). For the second case study, the values of discharge, velocity, and depth for x=0 and elapsed time of 850s were, respectively, 127.70m3/s, 3.87m/s, and 5.36m. For x=0 and an elapsed time of 1,230s, the values were 87.92m3/s, 4.49m/s, and 3.21m. Therefore, the MOC numerical approach has been confirmed to be useful for several engi
