The concept of bipolar linguistic summaries of data, introduced by Dziedzic, Zadrozny and Kacprzyk [1], is further developed. These summaries are meant as an extension of the "classical" linguistic summarization [2], [3], a human-consistent data mining technique, making it possible to express more complex patterns present in data. The focus of the paper is to provide a deeper insight into the very concept of these summaries and illustrating them with some practical examples. Results of preliminary computational experiments are included.

This paper introduces a goal-oriented framework which consists of generic and specific model repositories, and of methodology for integrated change management of business and IT evolutions. Is based on model compositions and traceability assessments of goal-oriented and scenario models. It contains a versioning-based cooperative work environment for business analysts to generate strategy decisions and simulations, themselves. The techniques and tools used are from the User Requirements Notation standard for requirements engineering and its supporting tools. Sets of models for visual documentation of BABOK 2.0 standard for business analysis, and of ISO/IEC 27001 and 27002 standards for information security, form the model repository to support developers and decision makers. These rise the generic aspect of the framework. An instantiation of framework for B2B change management with empirical validation within an SME, has been done. In a long way, this framework will be a base on a more complex system configuration control framework.

The telecommunications industry is immersed in a deep process of transformation, in which the natural complexity of any evolution in business models is increased by accelerated innovation that exists in the sector. The providers’ diversity has to resolve how to fix and develop the prices of their services in a frame with many unknowns and fewer equations. In this article, we propose a model for calculating the costs of a user, who accesses and uses the Internet services that it provides, based in a methodology to structure various types of services and assign costs.

Don't Make Art, Do Industrial Design: A Voice from Industry

作者： KwanMyung Kim Kun‐Pyo Lee Finishing his Ph.D. research in Industrial Design at KAIST while serving as an assistant professor in the School of Design and Human Engineering at UNIST (Ulsan National Institute Science and Technology) Korea. He received a BSc and MSc and completed a PhD course in industrial design from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1992 1994 and 2010 respectively. He has a strong practical background stretching from design to engineering to business having been involved in developing products and machine systems for 13 years as a product designer design engineer and founder of a venture company. As a researcher and practitioner he is interested in integrating design and engineering knowledge for design‐driven product and product‐service innovation. Professor in the department of industrial design at KAIST and the director of its Human Centered Interaction Design Lab. He also serves as president of the International Association of Societies of Design Research. Lee was the executive vice president and head of the corporate design center for LG Electronics and has worked on various research projects with many of the world's leading companies and organizations such as LG Electronics Samsung Electronics Johnson and Johnson and Volkswagen as well as for government organizations. He has served on the advisory boards of several organizations and journals in Korea and abroad.

Industrial designers and engineering designers: Can't we all just get along? Unfortunately, when push comes to shove, it's engineering that tends to win. How can schools better prepare industrial designers for the work force? engineering designers and industrial designers would get along much better if they shared common knowledge and common goals—long before they reached the workplace.

Shallow Water Hydrodynamic Investigation of Local Scour over Smooth and Rough Sediment Beds

Over the recent years, a number of studies in nearshore sediment transport have been researched but a greater understanding of soil-hydrodynamic interaction has still paramount importance. A series of 2D small-scale physical experiments were performed at the University of East London (UEL) hydraulics laboratory to investigate the influence of flow and sediment properties on soil scour. Measured sediment and flow data were used to develop a simple empirical relationship for scour rate of each crescent zone with the help of dimensional analysis and best-fit technique under smooth bed condition. The proposed paper discusses the extended investigation on soil-hydrodynamic behaviour by increasing the mobile bed roughness to greater values used in earlier experiments by the authors to better understand sediment particle sorting mechanism and their spreading characteristics during scour. Eventually, the proposed experimental work will lead to the comparison, calibration and development of predictive curves of scour rate for different soils of each developing crescent zones.

Percutaneous intervention involves the insertion of needles to specific locations inside the human body, to perform a variety of surgical procedures. Percutaneous procedures are becoming the preferred choice for many neurosurgeons, due to the additional benefits they provide over conventional open neurosurgery. A neurosurgical flexible and steerable probe named STING is currently being developed for accessing deep brain lesions following curvilinear paths. In this paper, we present a path planning method for generating pre-operative paths for this neurosurgical flexible probe. Since the flexible probe is modeled as a nonholonomic system, a deterministic continuous curvature path planning scheme capable of avoiding obstacles is developed for smooth steering of its tip. Multiple paths are generated by varying arrival angle at the targeted lesion and a path optimization approach is then formulated, with the aim to minimize damage to the tissue (i.e. shortest path) and the risk to the patient (obstacle avoidance). Simulation results are reported using the risk-map generated for a coronal slice of the brain, which confirms the successful design of a path planning scheme that satisfies the nonholonomic constraints of the neurosurgical probe.

Anytime systems represent a subfamily of the realtime ones. They provide continuous operation even in cases when the circumstances are changing, e.g temporary shortage of time, changing computational power, etc. As the available computation time decreases, the accuracy of the computation becomes negatively affected. Iterative algorithms support this kind of computation. Unfortunately the construction of iterative algorithms is complex and their usability is limited. In this paper a novel method for anytime systems with modular architecture is introduced. The main aim of the proposed algorithm is to extend the applicability of anytime systems. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated on a categorization problem. © 2011 IEEE.

A Tractable Class of Algorithms for Reliable Routing in Stochastic Networks

The goal of this article is to provide the theoretical basis for enabling tractable solutions to the “arriving on time” problem and enabling its use in real-time mobile phone applications. Optimal routing in transportation networks with highly varying traffic conditions is a challenging problem due to the stochastic nature of travel-times on links of the network. The definition of optimality criteria and the design of solution methods must account for the random nature of the travel-time on each link. Most common routing algorithms consider the expected value of link travel-time as a sufficient statistic for the problem and produce least expected travel-time paths without consideration of travel-time variability. However, in numerous practical settings the reliability of the route is also an important decision factor. In this article, we consider the following optimality criterion: maximizing the probability of arriving on time at a destination given a departure time and a time budget . We present an efficient algorithm for finding an optimal routing policy with a well bounded computational complexity, improving on an existing solution that takes an unbounded number of iterations to converge to the optimal solution. A routing policy is an adaptive algorithm that determines the optimal solution based on en route travel-times and therefore provides better reliability guarantees than an a-priori solution. Novel speed-up techniques to efficiently compute the adaptive optimal strategy and methods to prune the search space of the problem are also investigated. Finally, an extension of this algorithm which allows for both timevarying traffic conditions and spatio-temporal correlations of link travel-time distributions is presented. The dramatic runtime improvements provided by the algorithm are demonstrated for practical scenarios in California.

This paper presents an innovative electronic medical records (EMR) system, RF-MediSys, which can perform medical information sharing and retrieval effectively and which is accessible via a 'smart' medical card. With such a system, medical diagnoses and treatment decisions can be significantly improved when compared with the conventional practice of using paper medical records systems. Furthermore, the entire healthcare delivery process, from registration to the dispensing or administration of medicines, can be visualised holistically to facilitate performance review. To examine the feasibility of implementing RF-MediSys and to determine its usefulness to users of the system, a survey was conducted within a multi-disciplinary medical service organisation that operates a network of medical clinics and paramedical service centres throughout Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Questionnaires were distributed to 300 system users, including nurses, physicians and patients, to collect feedback on the operation and performance of RF-MediSys in comparison with conventional paper-based medical record systems. The response rate to the survey was 67%. Results showed a medium to high level of user satisfaction with the radiofrequency identification (RFID)-based EMR system. In particular, respondents provided high ratings on both 'user-friendliness' and 'system performance'. Findings of the survey highlight the potential of RF-MediSys as a tool to enhance quality of medical services and patient safety.
