This study reports on the fabrication and characterization of a copper oxide (CuO)-based photoactive cell. Copper was thermally evaporated onto two substrates and post-treated using chemical and thermal treatments to obtain different semiconducting types of CuO. Absorption measurements were conducted to obtain the bandgaps of CuO, which were found to be 1.51 eV and 1.21 eV, for the chemically and thermally treated CuO, respectively. Finally, a chronoamperometry test was conducted to confirm the photoresponse of the cell, which showed a doubling of output current values under light conditions compared to dark conditions.

Barriers to the participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in wholesale electricity markets have limited the use of DERs for power system security and resilience. In September 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved an order to reduce these barriers. FERC Order No. 2222 enables the participation of DER aggregators in wholesale electricity markets. DERs include renewable generation and technologies that support the integration of renewable generation by increasing grid flexibility and resilience. Requiring wholesale energy markets to allow DER aggregator participation provides a path for DERs to become competitive in these markets. As the contribution from aggregated DERs continues to increase, the aggregator's role in supporting grid security and resilience will become more critical. This paper reviews work that demonstrates how DER aggregators can provide resilience support through technical capabilities, operational strategies, and secure communication architectures. Socioeconomic influences and impacts of aggregators, including implications for social resilience, are presented. In surveying the current state-of-the-art across different but interconnected topics, we illustrate how aggregators can be power system participants that enhance grid security. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to enhancing resilience in a power grid that includes a growing cohort of DER aggregators, but there are many options for aggregators to contribute to a more resilient and secure power grid.

This paper proposes a two-dimensonal positioning method based on a hidden Markov model map-matching scheme. The states of the hidden Markov model are generated by dividing the area of interest into a grid. At each time instant, the method considers two types of measurements: the platform’s heading and the two-dimensional distance between the platform and the single-anchor. A recursive Bayesian estimator exploits these measurements to estimate the platform’s position. The platform’s heading measurement is used to calculate the prior probability distribution. Following this, observation likelihood is computed by considering the two-dimensional distance measurement as the observation of the hidden Markov model. Finally, the most probable projection of these measurements on the states of the hidden Markov model is estimated as the platform’s position. The proposed method can be efficiently used, especially in constrained indoor and outdoor environments. Moreover, the method provides a two-dimensional positioning solution with an increased robustness thanks to the bounded error on the distance measurements. Simulation studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of maturity in quality management systems on assets, income and current ratio in companies of the hotel sector in the city of Barranquilla and its metropolitan area, based on the analysis of the level of maturity of the system and the application of multivariate statistical models. To achieve this, the Business Management strategies of this sector were characterized, based on a structured model of variables and based on field data referring to a representative sample of companies in the sector (n = 64). With this information, the determining factors in the level of maturity of the quality management systems were identified, which allowed to know if the processes developed in a management system, such as these, in the Hotel Sector, impact positively or negatively on the performance of the sector’s companies based on assets, income and the current ratio by means of a multiple regression model, since, although these processes are being implemented, there are no current studies that evidence the contributions to the performance of the sector’s companies. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This Article Proposes a modified method of adaptive controlling for the DC motor and it is deriver circuit based on Inverse Neural Controller. The proposed controller composed of two parts: the first is the inverse neural control that will control the speed of the direct current motor and, the second is adaptive correction factor that will act as an adaptive compensator to overcome the error (offset) in the steady state response of the motor (eliminate the steady state error). The obtained results prove that the new method successfully controlled the DC motor speed by eliminating the error in the steady state response, and letting the output correctly tracking the input set-point with minimum rising time and minimum peak overshoot. Simulation done using MATLAB SIMULINK. Results compared with the conventional Inverse Neural controller to demonstrate the impact of the proposed method also a load test had been done. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Use of internet for collecting the data is becoming increasingly popular amongst researchers due to its higher speed of data collection and lesser cost since it requires very less workforce. In this study, a webpage based revealed preference (RP) and stated preference (SP) survey is conducted, where the data collected from the revealed preference questionnaire is used in real-time to generate the options for stated preference experiment. For obtaining, the accurate coordinates of the origin-destination of a trip and the travel time by all available modes Google Maps API are used. A mode choice model using RP and SP data individually and a joint RP+SP model using traditional approach is developed and a comparison of the obtained results is made. The developed models suggest that this methodology can be used for collecting the RP data. However, the methodology can be improved for SP experiment and can be helpful in collecting the good quality SP data. Use of Google Maps API provides more accurate travel time and travel distance skims compared to zonal level skims obtained from travel demand model.

The current pandemic has adversely affected oxygen production and supply chain, where oxygen treatment is essential for the emergency treatment protocol of patients infected by the virus. This work reports on various techniques of oxygen generation methods, as well as the challenges facing its production, storage, and transportation. Moreover, this study offers a comparative analysis of various oxygen production techniques using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Methods (MCDM). Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), in addition to the weighting methodologies, Multiplicative Exponential Weighting (MEW) and Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) are chosen as tools to carry out the statistical analysis and rank the oxygen production methods. The ranking criteria includes cost, performance, environmental impact and safety. Moreover, this paper utilizes the Entropy Weight Method (EWM), Criteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) method, and the Stochastic Dominance (SD) method to distribute the criteria weights. The results show thar oxygen production using membrane technologies is the optimal technique based on all the provided tools and criteria. as it attained the maximum Entropy and Sd values of 0.548 through the TOPSIS method, and the highest CRITIC value through SAW and MEW methods which were 0.260 and 0.236, respectively. © 2022 The Author(s)

Metacells are disjoint and homogeneous groups of single-cell profiles, representing discrete and highly granular cell states. Existing metacell algorithms tend to use only one modality to infer metacells, even though single-cell multi-omics datasets profile multiple molecular modalities within the same cell. Here, we present Cross-MOdal Embedding for MetaCell Identification (COEM), which utilizes an embedded space leveraging the information of both scATAC-seq and scRNA-seq to perform aggregation, balancing the trade-off between fine resolution and sufficient sequencing coverage. COEM outperforms the state-of-the-art method SEACells by efficiently identifying accurate and well-separated metacells across datasets with continuous and discrete cell types. Furthermore, COEM significantly improves peak-to-gene association analyses, and facilitates complex gene regulatory inference tasks. © 2022, CC BY.

North Carolina is the third most hurricane-prone states in the US. In 2018, Hurricane Florence caused a lot of damages to households in North Carolina. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (FBCENC) serves 34 counties in North Carolina, and 22 of them were affected by Hurricane Florence. This research aims to investigate the impact of Hurricane Florence on the operations of FBCENC. We developed interactive dashboards to visualize food bank operational data and other relevant data and studied the trends and patterns of food distribution in three key stages: preparedness, response, and recovery. These dashboards enable food bank operations managers to explore and interact with the data with ease to explore the operational data at different stages, at different branch level, and on a different time scale (monthly, weekly, or daily). The impact on the operations of affected service areas vs. not affected areas could be investigated as well. The findings of this research will provide insight into how humanitarian relief agencies can better prepare for, respond to, and recover from the disruptions caused by hurricanes. © 2020 IEEE.

Under the circumstances of a patient's upper limb disability, aided by a robotic arm with faulty controls, assistance is needed, using augmented reality as an auxiliary. Our system, with a headset, using an internet connection and an augmented reality device, placed on the assistant's head, can ensure communication between the two, for both remote supervision and control. The assistant can enhance the control over the robotic arm, while having a head up display on the augmented reality glasses, based on what the patient sees. The communication is established through PC or mobile devices, connected to the internet. Having the patient's view, and enhanced control over the robotic arm, the assistant can interact with nearby smart objects. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.
