Prediction Tool on Fine Particle Pollutants and Air Quality for Environmental Engineering

This article focuses on the research, design and implementation of a prediction tool for air quality to estimate pollutant concentrations, contributing to environmental engineering. It addresses prediction of fine particle air pollutants of diameter less than 2.5 µm (particulate matter 2.5), their concentration being substantially influenced by urban traffic. We collect worldwide multicity data from health-related public sources on which mining is performed using classical data mining/machine learning paradigms: association rules, clustering and classification. Challenges include adapting appropriate techniques based on data, and capturing subtle domain-specific aspects. The prediction tool is built using knowledge discovered by mining, leveraging health standards, catering to novice, intermediate and expert users. The prediction output is accurate, efficient, interpretable and useful as evident from our experiments. The tool is helpful for urban decision support. This work is beneficial in developing software systems such as intelligent tutors, mobile device apps and smart city tools. It contributes to smart environment, mobility and living, making a positive impact on smart cities and sustainability. In this work, we claim that classical computational paradigms in their fundamental form can be adapted to solve environmental engineering problems, with easy comprehension, as per the Occam’s razor principle that advocates simplicity. This article constitutes applied research: using computational techniques to solve domain-specific problems. Future work includes exploring models in deep learning such as CNN and Bi-LSTM, and considering different types of pollutants as well as other sources besides multicity traffic data, to conduct further studies. Precipitation plays a highly significant part in the hydrological cycle and is responsible for depositing most of the freshwater on earth. It can also impact the climate ecosystem. Considerable work has been performed to understand, model and predict precipitation. However, to the best of our knowledge, hardly any interactive visualizations exist that allow end-users to obtain a better perception of local impacts; also there are no specific apps for this purpose. The two goals of our work are thus: to design a visualization tool that illustrates changes in precipitation in a given time period with analysis; and to design a mobile application (app) that displays Sub-Saharan precipitation patterns, both using big data. This work would be advantageous to environmental scientists, as well as local residents of the respective areas. It would also be beneficial to students interested in conducting climate-based research. It addresses the theme of IoT (Internet of Things) which involves providing ubiquitous access to Internet-Based information on platforms such as smartphones and other mobile devices.

We describe the use of an entertainment computer narrative game to teach words to a child in a special education process. In order to observe the potential of this kind of game, we chosen a child who has difficult to learn some words using a basic computer tool at writing learning special education environment. The results showed that narrative games and its entertainment resources can be a good way to allow child reads and writes words considering different sentences and contexts, as well as, resources of the game can be a useful strategy to engage child on the storytelling. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Previous studies concerned with mobile financial services for the poor have been narrowly conceived, mainly depending on secondary data and focusing on technical design issues without having fully understood individuals' complex relationships and money practices. In order to contribute to this knowledge gap and inform mobile money system design, an exploratory case study investigated social relationships and social payment practices among rural individuals in Ethiopia. Key findings regarding their money exchange practices include: (1) secrecy and disclosure of money exchange practices (2) acceptance and or rejection of money gift for some reasons, (3) personalize money giving and accepting practices, and finally (4) separating and labeling of money based on its purpose and source. A qualitative exploratory research approach with key informant focus group discussions served as the primary means of information gathering. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

This paper presents a method to leverage mobile interaction design knowledge for low-literacy, moving from falsifiable hypotheses (claims) to actionable solutions (patterns). In prior work, claims and patterns have been used separately for different application areas and in different contexts. This research asserts that the transition from claims to patterns will enhance the design value, leveraging claims for uncertain situations and inexplicit user behavior and patterns for proven solutions for recurrent problems. This paper examines how these two structures can be combined in a claims-to-patterns approach to leverage mobile interaction design for low-literacy. To demonstrate this method, an example that highlights how claims evolve into patterns through research and design is discussed.

This paper presents an integrated solution for 3D object detection, recognition, and presentation to increase accessibility for various user groups in indoor areas through a mobile application. The system has three major components: a 3D object detection module, an object tracking and update module, and a voice and AR-enhanced interface. The 3D object detection module consists of pre-trained 2D object detectors and 3D bounding box estimation methods to detect the 3D poses and sizes of the objects in each camera frame. This module can easily adapt to various 2D object detectors (e.g., YOLO, SSD, mask RCNN) based on the requested task and requirements of the run time and details for the 3D detection result. It can run on a cloud server or mobile application. The object tracking and update module minimizes the computational power for long-term environment scanning by converting 2D tracking results into 3D results. The voice and AR-enhanced interface integrates ARKit and SiriKit to provide voice interaction and AR visualization to improve information delivery for different user groups. The system can be integrated with existing applications, especially assistive navigation, to increase travel safety for people who are blind or have low vision and improve social interaction for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, it can potentially be used for 3D reconstruction of the environment for other applications. Our preliminary test results for the object detection evaluation and real-time system performance are provided to validate the proposed system. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Solving the conjugacy decision problem via machine learning

Machine learning and pattern recognition techniques have been successfully applied to algorithmic problems in free groups. In this paper, we seek to extend these techniques to finitely presented non-free groups, with a particular emphasis on polycyclic and metabelian groups that are of interest to non-commutative cryptography. As a prototypical example, we utilize supervised learning methods to construct classifiers that can solve the conjugacy decision problem, i.e., determine whether or not a pair of elements from a specified group are conjugate. The accuracies of classifiers created using decision trees, random forests, and N-tuple neural network models are evaluated for several non-free groups. The very high accuracy of these classifiers suggests an underlying mathematical relationship with respect to conjugacy in the tested groups.20F10, 68T05 Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Participating local community in cultural heritage management has always been a concern since the Venice Charter so far (1964). In addition, the Faro Convention (2005) shifted focus from cultural heritage values to the values of cultural heritage for society. In this case, there is required to design a simple method and tool in order to facilitate the interaction between local people and authority. This paper introduces a method and tool (iCommunity) that are now using in community-centered approach in the Bisotun World Heritage Site. The main goal of this application is to find a simple and applicable method and tool for inclusion the local community in decision-making processes in cultural heritage management. The proposed model is designed based on the general public participation principles, on the one hand, and the users' need and requirement in the world heritage site, on the other hand. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Ubiquitous applications use context information to provide services and relevant information for their users. On the other hand, in Software Product Line approaches, commonality and variability of a system family should be identified and documented through variability modeling. Thus, one of the challenges to build Context-Aware Product Lines, called Dynamic Software Product Lines, is the consistent representation of context information that influences the variability model. This work proposes the use of UML profiles and OCL to formalize and represent variability and context concepts in a consistent manner.

By endowing technology with the attributes of autonomous agency, human beings are ethically sidelined. Individuals are relieved of responsibility. The suggestion of being in the grip of irresistible forces provides an excuse for rejecting responsibility for oneself and others, thus creating conditions for inappropriate or antisocial behavior. It also impedes the search for solutions to pressing social problems associated with applications of technology. Failure to assign and accept responsibility for decisions to deploy "conventional" technology will inevitably impede our ability to deal with the social and ethical challenges of robotics. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2007.
