Nickel and cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) is one of promising active materials of battery supercapacitor hybrids (BSH) as the clean renewable energy. Designing composites and doping heteroatoms are widely applied to solve poor conductivity, serious agglomeration, and structural defects of NiCo-LDH. In this work, manganese cobalt LDH (MnCo-LDH) is firstly incorporated in sulfur-doped NiCo-LDH (S-NiCo-LDH) on Ni foam (NF) via the hydrothermal process as a binder-free electrode of BSH. Favorable morphology with nanowires covered on the vertical grown nanosheet array is successfully designed for MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH with the large specific surface area and the well-established pore structure. The specific capacitances (CF) of 681.4, 953.9 and 1581.3 F/g are respectively achieved for the NiCo-LDH, S-NiCo-LDH, MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH electrodes at the current density of 1 A/g. The larger CF value of MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH is due to larger conductivity and effective charge transfer paths. A BSH assembled using MnCo-LDH/S-NiCo-LDH/NF and graphene/NF electrodes shows a wide potential window of 1.6 V, a large maximum energy density of 46.6 Wh/kg at 0.8 kW/kg, and an excellent cyclic stability with the CF retention of 81% and the Coulombic efficiency higher than 87% after 10,000 times charge/discharge process at the current density of 7 A/g. © 2022

The effectiveness and efficiency of the operation of oil palm plantations are considered to be the most crucial factor to develop the productivity and profitability of the palm oil business. One of the major obstacles for the plants to optimally produce crops based on their capacity is caused by the presence of noxious weeds in the plantation area. However, weed control via chemical processes may potentially harm the surrounding environment if it is not properly managed. Therefore, an automatic system to assist the farmers to identify and control the weeds is required to minimize harmful impacts on the environment. Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems provide powerful tools to perform such tasks. In this work, we aim for an ML-based system design to perform an automatic weed recognition task. The methodology can provide an effort for environmental sustainability in oil palm plantations. The weed identification involves the description, the local names, and tolerance class of the weeds as well as suggestions to control them. The flow of this work consists of weed and herbicide data acquisition, data labeling, model configurations, and data training. Further, the proposed system can be adopted as an android-based application in mobile devices that can deploy the trained model to predict weed category in both real-time and non-real-time tasks.

We introduce cytoNet, a cloud-based tool to characterize cell populations from microscopy images. cytoNet quantifies spatial topology and functional relationships in cell communities using principles of network science. Capturing multicellular dynamics through graph features, cytoNet also evaluates the effect of cell-cell interactions on individual cell phenotypes. We demonstrate cytoNet's capabilities in four case studies: 1) characterizing the temporal dynamics of neural progenitor cell communities during neural differentiation, 2) identifying communities of pain-sensing neurons in vivo, 3) capturing the effect of cell community on endothelial cell morphology, and 4) investigating the effect of laminin α4 on perivascular niches in adipose tissue. The analytical framework introduced here can be used to study the dynamics of complex cell communities in a quantitative manner, leading to a deeper understanding of environmental effects on cellular behavior. The versatile, cloud-based format of cytoNet makes the image analysis framework accessible to researchers across domains.

Calorie restriction (CR) and fasting affect lifespan, disease susceptibility and response to acute injury across multiple animal models, including ischaemic injuries such as myocardial infarction or kidney hypoxia. The cargo and function of circulating extracellular vesicles (EV) respond to changes in host physiology, including exercise, injury, and other interventions. Thus, we hypothesised that EVs induced following CR may reflect some of the beneficial properties of CR itself. In a pilot study, EVs were isolated from mice following 21 days of 30 % CR, and from eight human donors after 72 h water-only fasting. EV size, concentration and morphology were profiled by NTA, western blot and cryoEM, and their function was assessed using multiple assays related to ischaemic diseases. We found that EVs from post-fasting samples better protected cardiac cells from hypoxia/reperfusion (H/R) injury compared to pre-fasting EVs. However, there was no difference when used to treat H/R-injured kidney epithelial cells. Post-fasting derived EVs slowed the rate of fibroblast migration and slightly reduced macrophage inflammatory gene expression compared to pre-fasting derived EVs. Lastly, we compared miRNA cargos of pre- and post-fasting human serum EVs and found significant changes in a small number of miRNAs. We conclude that fasting appears to influence EV cargo and function, with varied effects worthy of further exploration. © 2023 The Authors. With the recent rapid development of the Internet of Vehicles and autonomous driving technology, the demand for digital vehicle identification has also increased. Coupled with the gradual maturity of quantum technology, the Internet of Vehicles, which mainly uses wireless communication technology for data transmission, will face the threat of quantum computing and privacy issues. This research proposes the Vehicle Forensics Cloud System (VFCS), a framework combining post-quantum cryptography and blockchain technology to address these issues and provide a comprehensive solution for vehicle digital forensics.

The Quality of Service (QoS) for applications is becoming increasingly important with the expansion of the Internet. A software-defined network offers flexibility and scalability in the use of network resources, like a meter table, which enables OpenFlow switches to measure flow rates and can be used to realize the rate limiter QoS. However, this drops packets when the flow-rate is over the limit, making the TCP congestion window reduce and grow periodically. The QoS of the upper layer using TCP will suffer regularly because of packet losses and bandwidth oscillation. Therefore, we propose a QoSTCP protocol using the meter and Rate Limiting Notification (RLN) to improve the QoS of TCP in SDN. The meter in the switch measures the flow rate to mark RLNs in the packets when the flow rate exceeds the threshold. A QoSTCP sender gets marking information to reduce the window size proportional to the marking packet ratio to avoid packet drop. We also provide a theoretical analysis to estimate when to mark packets at specific thresholds under two kinds of bandwidth demands in QoS, maximum and average rate. In order to verify QoSTCP performance, we implement a Two Rate Three Color Marker (trTCM) meter to measure the flow rate and mark RLNs using a programming protocol-independent Packet Processors (P4) switch. To simplify our implementation, the existing Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) and Data center TCP (DCTCP) are modified to emulate QoSTCP behavior. Experiment results confirm not only that QoSTCP provides a consistent rate guarantee by avoiding packet drop but also that it matches our theoretical analytical results.

We have demonstrated ultrastrong and superstrong coupling of a Landau-quantized two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs with a multiple-mode three-dimensional terahertz photonic-crystal cavity. The cavity had an asymmetric design such that the real-space profiles of photonic modes depended on the electric field polarization. Terahertz magnetospectroscopy experiments with polarized radiation clearly showed that the degree of hybridization of multiple cavity modes is a function of the spatial overlap of the photonic modes. These findings can be utilized for the dynamical tuning of multimode light–matter interactions, which can lead to the development of novel terahertz devices.

Magnetic kagome materials provide a fascinating playground for exploring the interplay of magnetism, correlation and topology. Many magnetic kagome systems have been reported including the binary FemXn (X=Sn, Ge;m:n = 3:1, 3:2, 1:1) family and the rare earth RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth) family, where their kagome flat bands are calculated to be near the Fermi level in the paramagnetic phase. While partially filling a kagome flat band is predicted to give rise to a Stoner-type ferromagnetism, experimental visualization of the magnetic splitting across the ordering temperature has not been reported for any of these systems due to the high ordering temperatures, hence leaving the nature of magnetism in kagome magnets an open question. Here, we probe the electronic structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a kagome magnet thin film FeSn synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy. We identify the exchange-split kagome flat bands, whose splitting persists above the magnetic ordering temperature, indicative of a local moment picture. Such local moments in the presence of the topological flat band are consistent with the compact molecular orbitals predicted in theory. We further observe a large spin-orbital selective band renormalization in the Fe dxy+dx2-y2spin majority channel reminiscent of the orbital selective correlation effects in the iron-based superconductors. Our discovery of the coexistence of local moments with topological flat bands in a kagome system echoes similar findings in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, and provides a basis for theoretical effort towards modeling correlation effects in magnetic flat band systems. © 2024, CC BY.
