Optical analog signal processing has been gaining significant attention as a way to overcome the speed and energy limitations of digital techniques. Metasurfaces offer a promising avenue towards this goal due to their efficient manipulation of optical signals over deeply subwavelength volumes. To date, metasurfaces have been proposed to transform signals in the spatial domain, e.g., for beam steering, focusing, or holography, for which angular-dependent responses, or nonlocality, are unwanted features that must be avoided or mitigated. Here, we show that the metasurface nonlocality can be engineered to enable signal manipulation in the momentum domain over an ultrathin platform. We explore nonlocal metasurfaces performing basic mathematical operations, paving the way towards fast and power-efficient ultrathin devices for edge detection and optical image processing.

This paper proposes a harmonization between a product quality model and a software process model used in the industry, CERTICS (a national Brazilian model) and CMMI-DEV (an international model). The focus of this harmonization is on the Competence Area of Continuous Improvement of CERTICS, which addresses the key question of whether the software is the result of Continuous Improvement actions originating in the management of personnel, processes and knowledge to support and enhance their development and technological innovation. The results of the harmonization are examined step by step, as well as including a review of the harmonization, and were assisted by an expert on the CERTICS and CMMI-DEV models. Thus, this paper aims to correlate the structures of the two models to reduce the implementation time and costs, and to stimulate the execution of multi-model implementations in software development. © ISCA, CATA 2017.

This paper presents a harmonization proposal between a product quality model, the CERTICS (a national Brazilian model) and a software process model, CMMI-DEV (an international model) used in the industry. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is a vital step in using mathematical models and simulations to take decisions. The field of cardiac simulation has begun to explore and adopt UQ methods to characterise uncertainty in model inputs and how that propagates through to outputs or predictions. In this perspective piece we draw attention to an important and under-addressed source of uncertainty in our predictions — that of uncertainty in the model structure or the equations themselves. The difference between imperfect models and reality is termed model discrepancy, and we are often uncertain as to the size and consequences of this discrepancy. Here we provide two examples of the consequences of discrepancy when calibrating models at the ion channel and action potential scales. Furthermore, we attempt to account for this discrepancy when calibrating and validating an ion channel model using different methods, based on modelling the discrepancy using Gaussian processes (GPs) and autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) models, then highlight the advantages and shortcomings of each approach. Nowadays, messaging technology in digital data form more often used and not less messages that confidentially wanted. Then it should be modified so that can be understood only by the sender and the intended recipients. All of this system can be realization by using cryptography. LUC algorithms are introduced by Smith and Lennon in 1993. LUC algorithm is an algorithm that based on the use of Lucas sequence (specific arithmetic operations derived from Lucas row) that rarely used to enhance the security of the messages. In this research, LUC algorithm is combined with visual cryptography to process the encryption and the description of a colored image. Four different images were used in the trial here. The performance of the system is assessed using Structural similarity (SSIM) which has an assessment similar to human eye. If the image quality is the same as the original image, then the SSIM value is one. Whereas if the quality of decryption image is very different from the original image then the value of SSIM is zero. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Derivative-free superiorization: Principle and algorithm

The superiorization methodology is intended to work with input data of constrained minimization problems, that is, a target function and a set of constraints. However, it is based on an antipodal way of thinking to what leads to constrained minimization methods. Instead of adapting unconstrained minimization algorithms to handling constraints, it adapts feasibility-seeking algorithms to reduce (not necessarily minimize) target function values. This is done by inserting target-function-reducing perturbations into a feasibility-seeking algorithm while retaining its feasibility-seeking ability and without paying a high computational price. A superiorized algorithm that employs component-wise target function reduction steps is presented. This enables derivative-free superiorization (DFS), meaning that superiorization can be applied to target functions that have no calculable partial derivatives or subgradients. The numerical behavior of our derivative-free superiorization algorithm is illustrated on a data set generated by simulating a problem of image reconstruction from projections. The plots of proximity-target curves of our experiments demonstrate the advantage of the proposed derivative-free superiorization algorithm. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A high-order log barrier-based mesh generation and warping method

The ability to generate high-order meshes that conform to the boundary of curved geometries is a hurdle in the adoption of high-order computational methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. In this paper, we propose a method for generating and warping second-order Lagrange triangular and tetrahedral meshes based on a log barrier method. In the case of generation, the approach consists of modifying an initial linear mesh by first, adding nodes at the midpoint of each edge; second, displacing the newly added boundary midpoints to the curved boundary, and third, solving for the final positions of the interior nodes based on the boundary deformation. By allowing all of the boundary nodes to move, the approach can also be used to warp second-order triangular and tetrahedral meshes. We present several numerical examples in both two and three dimensions which demonstrate the capabilities of our method in generating and warping second-order curvilinear meshes.

A majority of electricity generation in the US is produced by thermoelectric power plants which require a constant supply of water for cooling. Many of these plants eject large quantities of hot water that was used for cooling into an adjacent river - a phenomenon known as thermal pollution - causing harm to local ecosystems and aquatic life. Commonly, plants lie within interconnected river networks, whence thermal pollution from plants upstream is translated to plants dowstream, causing less-effective cooling, and decreases in efficiency. By default, plants are managed locally, and government regulations combating thermal pollution take the form of local river temperature constraints. We propose analyzing this situation regionally, seeking to balance the trade-off between power demand and required pollution minimization in a region. We first consider fractional variants of this problem where plants may operate at some fraction of their total capacity. We provide optimal poly-time algorithms for such cases. We show that the integer version of the problem - where plants are either fully on or off - is already NP-hard when the river network topology is a path graph. We provide a dynamic programming FPTAS in this case. We compare the results of our algorithms to baseline heuristics in simulation. © 2016 IEEE.
