Animal behavior analysis has, in the past, taken a very low tech approach, with direct observer surveillance and automated video surveillance as the norm. These methods are insufficient when one wants to study interactions between large numbers of animals in their housing environment. In this paper we use a housing environment that has been equipped with a system of RFID sensors. RFID transponders were implanted into the study animal, the naked mole rat. The resulting data was analyzed using principal component analysis and frequent pattern mining. Results showed that these methods can identify time periods of high behavioral activity from that of low aclivity, along with which groups of animals interacted with one another. As far as we know, there is not a Node Localization Algorithm (NLA) that presents the same accuracy for all possible scenarios. We believe that a NLA should be able to "interpret" the dynamic information of the environment. In this sense, simple NLAs are rather focused and might perform well for specific scenarios and applications. Therefore, information fusion and context awareness seems to be an appropriate approach to address this issue. We propose the Smart Environmental Architecture for Node Localization (SEA-NL), which is composed by two main elements: (i) the Smart Beacon Nodes (SBNs) and (ii) the Logical Position of Nodes (LPN). In (i) the obstruction level indicator is estimated and can improve the estimation of distances among nodes. In (ii) environment information and a one to one relation between a node and an object are used and can also improve location estimation. Via simulation, our architecture was tested indoors and outdoors considering three localization algorithms: the Weighed Centroid Localization (WCL), the Centroid Localization, and the Triangular Centroid Localization. Finally, we present an accuracy comparison among NLAs used in isolated way, and by using the SBNs, the LPN, and the SEA-NL, where our architecture improves WCL up to ~30.88%.

A new method has been developed for the determination of carbaryl pesticides, in water and fruit samples using gold nanoparticles electrode conductivity detection. The effects of pH on the binding between carbaryl and humic acid (HA) and number of layer coated electrode were investigated and optimized. HA modified the polyelectrolyte multilayer thin films (PEMs) coating electrode was used to detect carbaryl. The current was decreased 4.75% after dipping in HA for 10 minutes. The current was decreased around 7.28% from the initial value after HA binding with carbaryl. The results demonstrated that the newly developed method was an efficient procedure for the detection of carbamate pesticides in water. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The continuous shrinking of devices has introduced new challenges to integrated circuit design, mainly to deal with the parametric variations in process parameters. This paper presents an evaluation of the process variability on the current Ids of nanotechnologies devices, individually and simultaneously, taking into account the correlation among them. The results show that the deviation from mean value is quite significant ≈ 16% for high performance models. The variation of L has the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in high performance models while the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in low power models still being due to Vth variations. Lastly, the effect of process parameter variations deteriorates with technology scaling, with a considerable increase in the deviation from the 22nm to 16nm technology.

The use of numerical prediction models are essential to modern society. Data assimilation is a technique that aims to increase the prediction accuracy by combining a model output with observational data, resulting in a state that is closer to the true state of the problem. Depending on the size of the model output and the number of observations to assimilate, the combination of these two sources of information may require intensive computing and become a challenge, even for supercomputers used in this type of application. Thus neural networks have been proposed as an alternative to perform high quality data assimilation at lower computational cost. This paper investigates the use of NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) in data assimilation. NEAT is capable of adapting the connections weights and the neural network topology using principles of evolutionary computation in a search for a minimum topology and best performance. In this work, two different models were used for testing: the Lorenz Attractor and Shallow Water model. The experiments compared the results obtained with NEAT and backpropagation neural networks, using as benchmark the Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE). In the experiment with the Lorenz Attractor, NEAT was able to emulate the data assimilation task with smaller error at lower computational cost. For the Shallow Water model, tested using different grid sizes, it was observed that the errors obtained with both neural networks were small, but NEAT showed high error values. On the other hand, NEAT always gets a topology with significantly fewer operations, and the computational cost difference increases with the grid size.

This paper presents a new code compression method where we use different dictionaries, all of them are based in traditional Huffman algorithm. Our method reduces code size by up to 34.5% (including all extra costs) and presents an improvement of almost 7% over the traditional Huffman method. We performed simulations using Simple Scalar and analyzes using the applications from benchmark MiBench and use the embedded processor ARM.

In recent Inuit ethnography, a major concern has been how and to what extent contemporary Inuit participate in and depend on subsistence activities, particularly in the context of increasing wage employment and growing participation in the cash economy. This paper provides an analysis of these activities in the predominately Inuit community of Nain, Labrador. Using social network data and demographic information collected between January and June 2010, we examine the interconnections between subsistence activities—obtaining “country food” through activities such as hunting, fishing, and collecting—with access to the means of obtaining subsistence resources (such as snow mobiles, cabins, and boats), employment status, and income. Our data indicate that individuals with higher employment status and income tend to be more central to the network of subsistence food sharing, but not because they have greater access to hunting tools or equipment (they do not). We conclude that those individuals who play the most central role in the network are those who are financially able to do so, regardless of access to hunting tools/means.

Identifying transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) is crucial for understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. It is known that transcription factors (TFs) often cooperate to regulate genes. While traditional approaches can be used to discover binding motifs of a group of co-regulated genes, they often fail to accurately assign motifs to the corresponding TFs. Here, we consider two TFs together to infer their TFBSs and their synergistic relationship simultaneously. The basic idea is that if two TFs interact, their TFBSs, if distinct, would be conserved across species and coincided in the promoter regions of the genes they co-regulated. Applying our method to Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromatin immunoprecipitation data, we predicted 110 TF pairs with statistically significant motif assignments. A majority of these TF pairs have literature support to be synergistic, and the designated motifs to TFs match well with their known consensus. We further examined the synergism of predicted TF pairs in seven experimental conditions using ANOVA, and identified significant interactions. © 2011 IEEE.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a food allergy-associated disease characterized by esophageal eosinophilia and associated inflammation. EoE has become increasingly common in industrialized countries. However, current management strategies, such as treatment with swallowed steroids and dietary restrictions, are nonspecific or negatively impact the quality of life of EoE patients. In addition, use of more specific therapies that target immunoglobulin E (IgE) and interleukin (IL)-5 have been largely unsuccessful in ameliorating EoE. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify novel, specific immunological pathways that underlie the pathogenesis of EoE that could be targeted to treat this disease. Recently, a genome-wide association study identified that EoE is associated with a gain-of-function polymorphism in the gene that encodes thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). TSLP is an IL-7 family member cytokine that promotes allergic inflammation by eliciting T helper type 2 cytokine responses, IgE production, and the expansion of a distinct population of basophils . However, whether TSLP directly promotes allergic inflammation in the esophagus and the mechanisms by which TSLP might contribute to the pathogenesis of EoE remain unknown. Here, we describe a new murine model of experimental EoE-like disease that was used to investigate the role of TSLP in allergic inflammation of the esophagus. Murine experimental EoE-like disease developed independently of IgE but was dependent on TSLP-elicited basophils. Critically, therapeutic antibody-mediated neutralization of TSLP or depletion of basophil populations ameliorated established EoE-like disease in mice. Finally, elevated TSLP levels and exaggerated basophil responses were observed in esophageal biopsies from EoE patients, and a gain-of-function polymorphism in TSLP correlated with increased basophil responses in patients with EoE.
