This work tries to contribute to the design of legged robots with capabilities boosted through thrusterassisted locomotion. Our long-term goal is the development of robots capable of negotiating unstructured environments, including land and air, by leveraging legs and thrusters collaboratively. These robots could be used in a broad number of applications including search and rescue operations, space exploration, automated package handling in residential spaces and digital agriculture, to name a few. In all of these examples, the unique capability of thruster-assisted mobility greatly broadens the locomotion designs possibilities for these systems. In an effort to demonstrate thrusters effectiveness in the robustification and efficiency of bipedal locomotion gaits, this work explores their effects on the gait limit cycles and proposes new design paradigms based on shaping these center manifolds with strong foliations. Unilateral contact force feasibility conditions are resolved in an optimal control scheme.

In the general context of COVID-19 teaching methods and techniques are directed to the virtual environment. While for courses this is not a major issue for laboratory practice is a big step back. In order to address this problem, we proposed a teaching methodology based on visual instructions that can help students develop the necessary practice skills while being in a safe environment.

Although various aspects of interdependencies among Power, Water, and Gas (PWG) infrastructures have been studied in the last couple of decades, there still exists void of modeling techniques capable of revealing the interdependencies among real-world infrastructures. This paper presents review of the state-of-the-art knowledge on interdependent critical infrastructure (ICI) modeling techniques along with delineation and discussion of interdependencies at transmission and distribution levels among PWG networks. The present study will also outline the suitability of various approaches to work with real-time infrastructure monitoring data that is becoming abundantly available in the recent years. The paper also highlights some directions on future research in interdependency modeling as well as suggestions on improving real-time interdependent models in operational and physical aspects.

Accuracy of robots is an important facet in an industrial setting. In this paper, we present a novel kinematic calibration methodology. Traditional calibration techniques require an external metrology device. Unlike those, the presented product here is highly practical in that it does not require a metrology device. The kinematic calibration model is formulated by making use of the robot itself as a metrology device to measure the geometry of a known artifact. The optimal parameters/characteristics of the model are identified using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. Our experimental results show that this new approach provides results comparable to those generated using spatial information provided by a Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM). Using this new approach (GageCAL), the Yaskawa Motoman "MH5-Hi" robot is calibrated. Our experimental testing also indicates that this methodology can be extended to a wide variety of anthropomorphic robots.

Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of functions, causes muscle, joint and bone deficits, moreover it increases the muscle tone level. FEScycling is an alternative rehabilitation process to conserve the musculoskeletal system affected by the injury in the functional state. The aim of this study is to get the legs bilaterally synchronized by FES and compare MMG signal responses. The preliminary protocol consists of five consecutive contractions. The first and the last contractions were discarded and the three intermediate contractions were analyzed. A ratio between MMG values of muscle responses during propulsion and return of pedalling phases was calculated for each cycle and each leg. The applied FES profile consisted of pulse and burst on time of 250 us and 5 ms and frequencies of 1000 Hz and 20 Hz, respectively. Results showed that greater MMG RMS values tend to occur during the propulsion phase than in the return phase. MMG Z axis of RLL and MMG X axis of LLL were the axes that presented the greatest ratios. The MMG RMS signal showed that greater values tend to occur during the propulsion phase than in the return phase of the same thigh.

This paper demonstrates a approach to design the field programmable CMOS operational transresistance amplifier. All the MOSFETs are replaced by the floating gate MOSFETs to make the OTRA design programmable. The charge at the floating gate can be programmed after fabrication, based on Hot-e-injection and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling techniques. This programming charge at floating gate results in threshold voltage variation in these MOSFETs, which in turn can modify circuit's specifications. The high frequency small signal analysis of the design is prepared and specifications of the design are rederived in terms of threshold voltages of the MOSFETs. The expressions of output voltage, transresistance, input impedance, output impedance and offsets are derived in terms of threshold voltages of respective MOSFETs. In order to achieve circuits AC and DC characteristics, the circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-spice 0.35um CMOS process. The simulated results shows 13 bit programming precision in transresistance, input impedance, output impedance, Temperature stability and dc offsets with respect to threshold voltage of respective MOSFETs.

This paper introduces a technique for tracking the movement of vehicles in consecutive video frames. The technique is based on a Kalman filter and a reliability point system. The Kalman filter predicts the most probable location of a detected vehicle in the subsequent video frame. This information is used by the tracking function to narrow down the search area for re-detecting a vehicle. The Kalman filter also helps to smooth out the irregularities due to the measurement error. The reliability point system provides a simple and fast mechanism to monitor the quality of tracking for the vehicles in the tracking list. Each vehicle is assigned with a reliability point, which can be increased or reduced at every tracking cycle depending on how consistent the vehicle is being re-detected. Experiment on some pre-recorded videos showed that the proposed technique can successfully track the preceding and overtaking vehicles in consecutive video frames.

When distributed generation (DG) units operate in a microgrid environment, there is a need for coordinated operation between the DGs, the utility grid and the loads. A Microgrid Central Controller (MGCC) can keep track of the status from the systemic point of view and command the local microsource controllers (MC) to ensure system stability. In various modes of operation, vis-à-vis grid-connected, islanded and during transition from grid-connected to islanded mode and vice versa, the MGCC can support the MCs by feeding the necessary information to contribute towards stable system operation. This paper discusses the implementation of the MGCC for a laboratory test system.

The heuristic methods have been widely developed for solution of complicated optimization methods. Recently hybrid methods that are based on combination of different approaches have shown more potential in this *** paper also introduces a new method by embedding the idea of particle swarm(PS) intelligence into the well-known method of simulated annealing(SA).This way SA has been capable to search a subspace of the search space by means of an individual particle;therefore the annealing process can start from lower temperatures and use shorter Markov chains for each particle,leading to faster *** results obtained with the proposed method show its potential in achieving both accuracy and speed in small and medium size problems,compared to many advanced methods.
