While predominately used for communications, lasers and fiber optics can also be applied to critical applications such as sensing a bridge’s structural integrity or the force applied by a medical tool. To do so, fiber optic sensors measure how light interacts with its surroundings. In this paper, we design and demonstrate experiments to introduce the concept of using light and fiber optics for sensing to students. Allowing them to further explore more applications of light in our daily lives. We first demonstrate how silicone could act as a light guide similar to that within an optical fiber. As light propagates through a medium with a different density, it could undergo reflection, refraction, and total internal reflection. Therefore, as the silicone light guide is bent, the light within will propagate differently. Allowing us to measure how much bending has been induced. Using simple items such as a solar panel, laser pointer, and the silicone light guide, a curvature sensor is developed. In the second experiment, we introduce a fun application of the light guide-based sensor as part of a soft robotic crawler. A video on how to make a soft robot at home is available on the Play with Light YouTube channel. Once students grasp the idea of using the light guide as a curvature sensor for monitoring the soft robotic crawler’s motion, we introduce the principles of fiber Bragg grating sensors, using an easy-to-understand illustration to expose students to more advanced technology.

Different properties of light such as polarization and its diverse wavelength spectrum, are commonly utilized throughout our daily lives. Using easy to obtain household items, we can perform activities illustrating the concept of light properties and principle of how these concepts are used in various applications. In this paper, we design and demonstrate two easy-to-follow activities to introduce how messages can be displayed or hidden using light’s properties. First, light from liquid crystal display (LCD) is used, which oscillates at a certain orientation or polarization. Messages from an LCD can be blocked from view if an observer is wearing polarized sunglasses with a polarization that is perpendicular to that of the LCD. Using an acrylic sheet, the LCD light’s polarization can be rotated, allowing the observer to see the LCD content. In our second experiment, messages written in different colors can be hidden in plain sight using a translucent putty of the same color. Putty reflects and scatters light that is of the same color. When the message and putty color matches, there is no light of the same color reflected off of the message. Making the message invisible to the viewer. Video demonstrations of both experiments can be found on the YouTube channel Play with Light. By using familiar objects, these demonstrations allow students to learn through play. Students can gain better insight into the nature of how light interacts with our surroundings to hide or reveal content. Providing greater insight into how modern technology utilizes these properties.

Locomotion tracking of a soft water robot that is propelled and steerable by dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), is proposed and demonstrated using a hybrid machine learning model. Measuring at 6 cm x 17 cm x 5 cm and weighing 28 g, this soft water robot can achieve a speed of 3 cm/s, equivalent to 50% of its body length per second (BL/s), while consuming approximately 1.0 W of power. Its buoyancy is enabled by the hexagonal honeycomb base made up of silicone. The DEA actuators are constructed from conductive carbon grease as the electrodes on the elastomer. The steerable soft water robot can complete a full 90° turn within 18 seconds. A comprehensive finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted on the actuators and the soft water robot to provide an in-depth study of the soft robot's performance including actuation force, travel distance, actuation angle, and steering disposition. For precise locomotion tracking, a novel hybrid machine learning model is developed, comprising two multi-layer perceptron branches in a single in-house model. Two additional bypass layers are added for steering behavior classification. The model attains a real- time accuracy of 98% for both the water robot's displacement and steering behavior prediction.
