RGB Color-Discriminable Photonic Synapse for Neuromorphic Vision System

To emulate the functionality of the human retina and achieve a neuromorphic visual system,the development of a photonic synapse capable of multispectral color discrimination is of paramount ***,attaining robust color discrimination across a wide intensity range,even irrespective of medium limitations in the channel layer,poses a significant ***,we propose an approach that can bestow the color-discriminating synaptic functionality upon a three-terminal transistor flash memory even with enhanced discriminating *** incorporating the strong induced dipole moment effect at the excitation,modulated by the wavelength of the incident light,into the floating gate,we achieve outstanding RGB color-discriminating synaptic functionality within a remarkable intensity range spanning from 0.05 to 40 mW cm^(-2).This approach is not restricted to a specific medium in the channel layer,thereby enhancing its *** effectiveness of this color-discriminating synaptic functionality is demonstrated through visual pre-processing of a photonic synapse array,involving the differentiation of RGB channels and the enhancement of image contrast with noise ***,a convolutional neural network can achieve an impressive inference accuracy of over 94%for Canadian-Institute-For-Advanced-Research-10 colorful image recognition task after the *** proposed approach offers a promising solution for achieving robust and versatile RGB color discrimination in photonic synapses,enabling significant advancements in artificial visual systems.

Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) is a form of lupus that affects the skin and is highly sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV-B. in particular. can trigger inflammation and apoptosis in CLE patients. making a sunscreen with effective UVB protection crucial. This study evaluates the effectiveness of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in sunscreen. ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using the High Energy Milling method. resulting in particle sizes of 7.77 nm and 4.44 nm. respectively. The creams containing these nanoparticles were tested for physical stability and UV protection. Results showed that the creams were physically stable and provided good UV protection. with ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles making up 12.60% of the total cream ingredients. resulting in the highest SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of 62.0 ± 1.37. © 2025 Institute of physics Publishing. This study investigates the structural and optical properties of the Zn1-x-yCuxReyO compound synthesized via solid-state reaction as a promising material for optoelectronic applications. The Cu2+ and Re4+ doping led to changes in the lattice parameters (reduction of a from 3.2432 Å to 3.2373 Å and c from 5.1947 Å to 5.1869 Å), average crystallite size (D, varying from 121 nm to 89 nm), and dislocation density (δ, ranging from 0.69 × 10−4 nm−2 to 1.27 × 10−4 nm−2). The Raman analysis indicated shifts in the E2low (98.08 cm−1 to 99.04 cm−1), and E2high (436.83 cm−1 to 437.68 cm−1) modes, suggesting reduced lattice parameters and increased defect concentration, particularly oxygen vacancies (Vo). Micrography analysis revealed that dopant concentration increased the particle cluster size and uniformity. The energy band gap (Eg) decreased from 3.183 ± 0.002 eV for the ZCR00 sample to 2.828 ± 0.002 eV, 2.868 ± 0.002 eV, and 2.857 ± 0.001 eV for the ZCR31, ZCR33, and ZCR35 samples, respectively, indicating the formation of new energy states. Refractive index values calculated using Moss, Herve-Vandamme, and Kumar-Singh models, ranged from 2.33 eV to 2.40 eV, consistent with band gap values. The PL measurements showed a decrease in UV band intensity with dopant insertion, reflecting changes in excitonic recombination. PL deconvolution revealed an increase in zinc vacancies (VZn) from 42.04 % to 61.63 % and a reduction in neutral oxygen vacancies (Vo) from 46.95 % to 33.26 %, with Vo+ emissions detected only in the ZCR33 and ZCR35 samples. These results suggest that the Zn1-x-yCuxReyO compound is a promising material for optoelectronics. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Advancing Precision Agriculture: Machine Learning-Enhanced GPR Analysis for Root-Zone Soil Moisture Assessment in Mega Farms

In this article, we investigate an intelligent ground penetrating radar (GPR) that facilitates root-zone soil moisture estimation, a key parameter in precision agriculture. To create an intelligent GPR, we must train machine learning (ML) methods applied to the GPR-received signal. This process requires a large number of labeled GPR data that would be time-consuming and labor-intensive if created via field measurements. This article uses gprMAX software to emulate drone-coupled GPR received signal to generate large-scale data for training ML models. The data are created via a 1.5 GHz Ricker waveform considering a three-layer soil consistent with a realistic soil horizon model. The approach is structured as follows: first, we generate a synthetic dataset using gprMAX. Feature engineering techniques are then employed to extract meaningful components from the GPR signals, followed by a rigorous selection process to identify the most effective ML model for soil moisture prediction. Finally, we validate our model by integrating synthetic data with real GPR data collected at the SoilX lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, enhancing prediction accuracy and generalization capability. Our proposed model achieves an overall average root-mean-squared error of 0.5%, and 1.56 cm for moisture and depth estimations, respectively. The proposed intelligent GPR, when installed on a drone, enables high horizontal (e.g., 10 m) and vertical (e.g., 1.5 cm) resolution and high penetration depth (beyond 2 m) megafarm root-zone 3-D moisture map creation. Thus, it offers much higher capabilities when compared to traditional methods, such as synthetic aperture radar and satellite imaging. These results facilitate efficient farming practices, such as optimizing irrigation models, for better crop yields and food security. © 2023 IEEE.

Utilizing eco-friendly inhibitors offers an effective approach to combat pipe corrosion, as focus has increasingly turned towards options that are cost-effective, environmentally benign. The research investigates the application of waste from domestic chicken eggshells as a corrosion inhibitor. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, morphology, and chemical properties of 316L stainless steel when treated with these eggshell-based inhibitors. The study employed several techniques, including EPD coating, potentiodynamic polarization, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy in seawater. The findings indicated that the lowest corrosion rate was observed in specimens treated with a 14g inhibitor concentration, with an average rate of 6.24883x10-4 mmpy with the efficiency 96.09%. Analysis SEM revealed that the sample without any inhibitors exhibited numerous small cavities on its surface. In contrast, the sample with a 14g inhibitor concentration showed a reduction in these cavities and a darker surface appearance due to the presence of a layer of adsorbed eggshell powder. Raman spectroscopy of the samples treated with 14 grams of eggshell powder, the final product of corrosion has disappeared, but there is still a α-FeOOH feature and its intensity is greatly reduced. drastic. Compositionally complex solid electrolyte(Li_(0.375)Sr_(0.4375))(Ta_(0.375)Nb_(0.375)Zr_(0.125)Hf_(0.125))O_(3)(LSTNZH)samples are synthesized using different sintering temperatures,durations,and cooling conditions(furnace cooling(FC)*** quenching(AQ)).The temperature-dependent grain growth has been examined to investigate the microstructural evolution and the origin of exaggerated(abnormal)grain *** moderate temperatures,the grain growth of LSTNZH follows a cubic root growth model with an Arrhenius temperature *** increasing temperature,bimodal microstructures develop,and the Arrhenius temperature dependence breaks ***,increasing the temperature induces increased Nb segregation at general grain boundaries(GBs),in contrast to classical GB segregation models but suggesting premelting-like GB disordering,which can explain the observed abnormal grain growth(AGG).In addition,the large grains become faceted with increasing temperature,which occurs concurrently with the temperature-induced transitions in GB segregation and grain growth,thereby further supporting the occurrence of a GB phase-like(complexion)*** impacts on the densification,ionic conductivity,and hardness are also *** work provides a new insight into the fundamental understanding of the grain growth mechanisms of the emergent class of medium-and high-entropy compositionally complex ceramics(CCCs),which is essential for tailoring microstructures and material properties.

In this study, we aim to enhance the efficiency of p-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (p-TOPCon) solar cells by improving charge carrier extraction while achieving higher fill factor (FF) and open circuit voltage (Voc). We explore various potential methods for the photovoltaic industrial procedure, including optimizing metallization patterns and techniques, such as the utilization of a high efficiency grid pattern (HEGP) in place of the conventional straight finger-line pattern (SFLP). Co-firing conditions, peak firing temperature, and belt speed are investigated for their impact on FF enhancement, along with evaluating the effects of single and double print processes. Furthermore, we examine the efficacy of Nafion treatment as a surface modification technique to enhance FF. Experimental results indicate that optimizing co-firing conditions and employing Nafion treatment significantly increased FF to approximately 83.26% in p-TOPCon solar cells. Adjusting peak firing temperature and belt speed, as well as implementing the double print process, demonstrate superior FF enhancement compared to the single print process. Additionally, Nafion treatment contributes to FF improvement by passivating surface defects and enhancing charge carrier collection. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into optimizing co-firing conditions and surface treatment techniques to enhance p-TOPCon solar cell efficiency (Eff) up to 23.50%, thus advancing high-efficiency photovoltaic technology. © 2024 The Korean Society of Industrial and engineering Chemistry

Multicolor microscopy and super-resolution optical microscopy are two widely used techniques that greatly enhance the ability to distinguish and resolve structures in cellular *** methods have individually transformed cellular imaging by allowing detailed visualization of cellular and subcellular structures,as well as organelle ***,integrating multicolor and super-resolution microscopy into a single method remains challenging due to issues like spectral overlap,crosstalk,photobleaching,phototoxicity,and technical *** challenges arise from the conflicting requirements of using different fluorophores for multicolor labeling and fluorophores with specific properties for super-resolution *** propose a novel multicolor super-resolution imaging method called phasor-based fluorescence spatiotemporal modulation(Phasor-FSTM).This method uses time-resolved detection to acquire spatiotemporal data from encoded photons,employs phasor analysis to simultaneously separate multiple components,and applies fluorescence modulation to create super-resolution ***-FSTM enables the identification of multiple structural components with greater spatial accuracy on an enhanced laser scanning confocal microscope using a single-wavelength *** demonstrate the capabilities of Phasor-FSTM,we performed two-color to four-color super-resolution imaging at a resolution of~λ/5 and observed the interactions of organelles in live cells during continuous imaging for a duration of over 20 *** method stands out for its simplicity and adaptability,seamlessly fitting into existing laser scanning microscopes without requiring multiple laser lines for excitation,which also provides a new avenue for other super-resolution imaging technologies based on different principles to build multi-color imaging systems with the requirement of a lower budget.

Self SOC Estimation for Second-Life Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are the mainstream technology for energy storage in several industrial segments, such as mobility and stationary systems for solar, wind, or other alternative energy source. This technology has a long lifetime, low self-discharge, high capacity and density, and can store energy longer. Despite that, LIB is suitable to supply power for electric mobility if its state of health (SOH) is higher than 80%. Then, an alternative for batteries with SOH below that is recycling or second-life batteries (SLB). The first is expensive and complex;only some companies retain the technology. Still, the SLB can be an excellent solution to maintaining LIBs in operation for slow vehicles or stationary systems. However, SLB requires intelligent battery management systems (BMS) because the packs are composed of cells with different characteristics, which makes the operation more difficult. This work presents a system consisting of two Machine Learning (ML) layers to automatically estimate the state of charge (SOC) of SLB independent of the battery’s capacity or age. In the first phase, a Random Forest (RF) model was built and trained to discover the curve capacity of different SLB characteristics and capacities. After the capacity curve selection, in the second phase, a new RF model was built and trained for each capacity curve to make SOC inferences of the batteries. The discharge data curve of one hundred batteries was used for the development, whereas eighteen were used for the training and eighty-two for tests. The results indicated a root square mean error (RSME) below 45 mAh for the capacity estimation (phase 1), and an RSME below 0.87% was found in the second phase for the SOC estimation. Finally, the capacity and SOC models have been inserted in a Raspberry system to measure the main parameters of SLB (voltage and current) and make inferences in real time independent of the cell’s age.
