Information is instrumental in our understanding of thermodynamics. Their interplay has been studied through completely degenerate Hamiltonians whereby the informational contributions to thermodynamic transformations can be isolated. In this setting, all states other than the maximally mixed state are considered to be in informational nonequilibrium. An important yet still open question is how to characterize the ability of quantum dynamics to preserve informational nonequilibrium. Here, the dynamical resource theory of informational nonequilibrium preservability is introduced to begin providing an answer to this question. A characterization of the allowed operations is given for qubit channels and the n-dimensional Weyl-covariant channels—a physically relevant subset of the general channels. An operational interpretation of a state discrimination game with Bell state measurements is given. Finally, an explicit link between a channel’s classical capacity and its ability to preserve informational nonequilibrium is made.

This research proposes a methodology for identifying the optimal feature combination using Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on edge and texture features. Canny, Sobel, and Prewitt for edge detection and GLCM, Gabor, and LBP for texture analysis are popular feature extraction techniques widely employed in various cases. The approach combines edge and texture features with SVM to classify rice types into five categories: Ipsala, Jasmine, Karacadag, Arborio, and Basmati. Experimental results demonstrate that SVM using Canny, Sobel, and Prewitt combined Gabor texture features outperforms the comparative methods. A comparative analysis based on accuracy scores using confusion matrices is conducted. Combining all feature edge methods, Canny, Sobel, and Prewitt with Gabor on SVM classification is the best model for rice object classification, achieving an accuracy of 96%. © 2023 IEEE.

Cooking oil as a food processing medium is commonly used by Indonesian people. However, most traders repeatedly use cooking oil to reduce production costs without paying attention to the quality decrease of the used oil. One of the parameters of oil quality degradation is the increase in peroxide number. Peroxide is a compound that triggers free radicals that cause cancer in the body human body. Therefore, the government supervises the use of cooking oil by testing it in the laboratory. Such testing requires a large amount of time, money, and energy. Therefore, in this study, a prototype of a portable peroxide level measuring instrument was made. This prototype utilizes a green laser diode as a light source. The sample used is mixed cooking oil with reagents. The mixing causes the sample to change color to purplish. The greater the rate of peroxide, the more purple the sample will be. Under these conditions, the sample absorbs visible light at 510-590nm range. Arduino will proceed the light transmission data into peroxide concentrations. Based on the test results, this prototype can be used to measure the concentration of peroxide properly in the measuring range 5.57-14.86 mEq O2/kg. The accuracy of this measuring instrument is 91.55%, with a precision value of 89.66%. © 2021 IEEE.

Organic semiconductors are promising building blocks for multifunctional spintronics. The spinterface plays a key role in affecting the magnetic properties of the performance of spin-based devices. Herein, we reveal the strong interfacial interplay affecting the magnetic switching at the interface of the synthetic paramagnetic tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)iron(iii) (Feq3) layer on the ferromagnetic surface. In combination with synchrotron-based analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we observed that the robust magnetic interactions of the Co/Feq3 system were strongly influenced by the interfacial reaction between Co and Feq3. As the charge transferred from the contacted Co to Feq3, the central iron was reduced from Fe(iii) to Fe(ii) and hybridized with the 8-hydroxyquinoline, causing spin polarization at the interface. The reduced central Fe(ii) exhibited apparent ferromagnetic ordering after contact with the ferromagnetic Co substrate. With increasing the Feq3 layer thickness, the central Fe reverted to its original Fe(iii) state, resulting in the disappearance of ferromagnetic ordering. The thickness dependence of the Feq3 layer on the magnetic response could be used to tune the spinterface properties and thus the interfacial magnetic interplay. These findings reveal the effect of the strong interfacial redox on the spinterface and open up a promising approach for the use of metal-organic materials in oragnic spintronic devices. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Sensing beyond the exceptional point for high detectivity

Exceptional point (EP)-based optical sensors exhibit exceptional sensitivity but poor detectivity due to their acute sensitivity to perturbations such as noise. When the optical budget is limited as in applications on mobile platforms, high detectivity might be equally important as high sensitivity. In such scenarios, off-EP sensing is advantageous where a slight loss in sensitivity can lead to a significant gain in detectivity. Here, we show that a passive parity-time symmetric plasmonic-photonic hybrid shows a peak in its detectivity off EP where the sensitivity is still very high – surpassing the sensitivities of equivalent fully-plasmonic and fully-photonic systems. We demonstrate the high detectivity of off-EP sensing of anti-mouse IgG protein using this plasmonic-photonic hybrid system. We report a sensitivity of 1.2 nm/nM while requiring a minimum optical budget of 1.3 nJ. Thus, non-Hermitian plasmonic-photonic hybrids could be the best class of nanophotonic sensors for real-world applications. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Tailoring morphology and composition of metal organic frameworks (MOF) can improve energy storage by establishing high surface area, large porosity and multiple redox states. Structure directing agents (SDA) is functional of designing surface properties of electroactive materials. Ammonium fluoride has functional abilities for designing MOF derivatives with excellent energy storage abilities. Systematic design of MOF derivatives using ammonia fluoride-based complex as SDA can essentially create efficient electroactive materials. Metal species can also play significant roles on redox reactions, which are the main energy storage mechanism for battery-type electrodes. In this work, 2-methylimidazole, two novel SDAs of NH4BF4 and NH4HF2, and six metal species of Al, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are coupled to synthesize MOF derivatives for energy storage. Metal species-dependent compositions including hydroxides, oxides, and hydroxide nitrates are observed. The nickel-based derivative (Ni-HBF) shows the highest specific capacitance (CF) of 698.0F/g at 20 mV/s, due to multiple redox states and advanced flower-like surface properties. The diffusion and capacitive-control contributions of MOF derivatives are also analyzed. The battery supercapacitor hybrid with Ni-HBF electrode shows a maximum energy density of 27.9 Wh/kg at 325 W/kg. The CF retention of 170.9% and Coulombic efficiency of 93.2% are achieved after 10,000 cycles. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

The delineation of Lymph Nodes (LNs) is pivotal in pinpointing therapeutic targets for radiotherapy in head and neck malignancies. Nevertheless, this endeavor poses a formidable challenge, primarily stemming from the suboptimal contrast against adjacent tissues. This investigation introduces a deep learning methodology aimed at automating the segmentation of LNs within CT scans, offering the following contributions: (1) Expanding upon the 3D Unet model, we incorporate a parallel block consisting of attention gate and squeeze & excitation modules. We extensively evaluate various versions of this parallel block and achieve favorable performance. (2) To address the slow decrease in Dice loss, we introduce a lightweight boundary refinement module. Our proposed method is assessed on a dataset comprising 103 patients and 603 Lymph Nodes (LNs), with 452 nodes used for training and 151 nodes for testing. The node-level Dice similarity coefficient achieved by our method reaches an impressive 0.833. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
