Next-generation medium-energy gamma-ray instruments sensitive from 25 keV to 1 GeV must be able to measure and reconstruct incident photons in the photoabsorption, Compton, and pair-production regimes. Such robust functionality requires a tracker with high resolution, low noise, and low power. The monolithic CMOS active pixel silicon sensor AstroPix is a novel mission-enabling technology. AstroPix will provide the energy- and angular-resolution required of a medium-energy gamma-ray telescope while reducing noise with the dual detection-and-readout capabilities of an HVCMOS chip. Plans for A-STEP, a funded Astropix Sounding rocket Technology dEmonstration Payload, will be presented. This roughly 2U-sized payload will include three layers of AstroPix quad-chips for cosmic ray and gamma ray detection and tracking. This technology demonstration mission also strengthens the design readiness of AMEGO-X, an MIDEX-sized MeV telescope mission concept. Additional supplementary development and testing of the AstroPix project will also be considered, including A-STEP simulation efforts for environment and detector response modeling. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Nernst-Ettingshausen effect in thin Pt and W films at low temperatures

As spin caloritronic measurements become increasingly common techniques for characterizing material properties, it is important to quantify potentially confounding effects. We report measurements of the Nernst-Ettingshausen response from room temperature to 5 K in thin film wires of Pt and W, metals commonly used as inverse spin Hall detectors in spin Seebeck characterization. Johnson-Nyquist noise thermometry is used to assess the temperature change of the metals with heater power at low temperatures, and the thermal path is analyzed via finite-element modeling. The Nernst-Ettingshausen response of W is found to be approximately temperature-independent, while the response of Pt increases at low temperatures. These results are discussed in the context of theoretical expectations and the possible role of magnetic impurities in Pt. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Observation of mechanical kink control and generation via phonons

Kinks (or domain walls) are localized transitions between distinct ground states associated with a topological invariant, and are central to many phenomena across physics, from condensed matter to cosmology. While phonon (i.e., small-amplitude vibration) wave packets have been theorized to deterministically interact with kinks and initiate their movement, this interaction has remained elusive in experiments, where only uncontrollable stochastic kink motion generated by thermal phonons or dislocation glide by low-frequency quasi-static loading have been observed. This is partly because all physical systems that support kinks are, at some level, discrete, making deterministic phonon control of kinks extremely challenging due to the existence of Peierls-Nabarro (PN) barrier. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, experimental observation of phonon-mediated control and generation of mechanical kinks, which we enable using a topological metamaterial that constitutes an elastic realization of the Kane-Lubensky chain model. Our metamaterial overcomes the PN barrier by supporting a single, topologically protected kink that requires zero energy to form and move. Using simulations that show close agreement with our experimental observations, we also reveal unique dynamics of phonon interplay with highly discrete kinks, including long-duration motion and a continuous family of internal modes, features absent in other discrete nonlinear systems. This work introduces a new paradigm for topological kink control, with potential applications in material stiffness tuning, shape morphing, locomotion, and robust signal transmission. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Stress is a psychological response that must be handled properly, or it can affect psychology and trigger other complicated diseases. Nowadays, stress measured by filling out stress-related forms or interviews with a psychologist. This method still requires a willingness from the patient to consult their condition, which is often not giving the best result due to late treatment. Therefore, we need a system to monitor a person’s stress level conditions independently so they could be threatened quickly if their state gets worsen. One of the non-invasive methods that can be used to measure stress is an Electrodermal Activity (EDA) sensor. EDA is known to be associated with sweat gland activity regulated by SudoMotor Nerve Activity (SMNA), which response to a stressor. However, the SMNA need to decompose into the Skin Conductance Response (SCR) before it could represent stress condition. Hence, the decomposition stage is essential in measuring the quality of the stress condition. In this study, the EDA sensor placed in the palm to obtain the skin conductivity signal. Then, the skin conductivity signals were deconvolved using the Continuous Deconvolution Analysis (CDA) method to capture the SCR. CDA was chosen because it could produce a zero-based line SCR driver and could separate two overlapping peaks in SCR. The result, CDA is adequate to extract SCR, which is shown by the zero baseline of the SCR driver line with a clear peak. BaZr1-2xFe2xO3-δ (x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.08) samples were prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method quickly and at low-temperature. Furthermore, we explored for the first time the effect of iron (Fe) in the barium zirconate (BZO) lattice on photocatalytic and piezocatalytic activity to degrade organic dye. Fe insertion reduced the band gap, altered the electronic structure and induced luminescence quenching. The catalytic activity of the samples was analyzed through the degradation of the rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The photocatalytic experiment was performed under UVC light and the piezocatalytic experiment under ultrasonic vibration. The pure sample of BZO showed better photocatalytic performance, while the insertion of Fe was unfavorable to degrade RhB. In contrast, pure BZO has negligible piezocatalytic activity, but a low Fe content is highly beneficial for promoting piezocatalysis. Based on the findings, this study provides important information for obtaining effective photocatalysts and piezocatalysts to be used in environmental remediation. © 2023, The Authors. Accurate and precise quantum computation of valence two-neutron systems

Developing methods to solve nuclear many-body problems with quantum computers is an imperative pursuit within the nuclear physics community. Here, we introduce a quantum algorithm to accurately and precisely compute the ground state of valence two-neutron systems leveraging presently available noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Our focus lies on the nuclei having a doubly magic core plus two valence neutrons in the p, sd, and pf shells, i.e., He6, O18, and Ca42, respectively. Our ansatz, quantum circuit, is constructed in the pair-wise form, taking into account the symmetries of the system in an explicit manner, and enables us to reduce the number of qubits and the number of CNOT gates required. The results on a real quantum hardware by IBM Quantum Platform show that the proposed method gives very accurate results of the ground-state energies, which are typically within 0.1% error in the energy for He6 and O18 and at most 1% error for Ca42. Furthermore, our experiments using real quantum devices also show the pivotal role of the circuit layout design, attuned to the connectivity of the qubits, in mitigating errors.

The restoration of coral reef population in coastal regions is currently a growing concern. Many attempts have been made to apply new approaches to limit the deterioration of coral reefs, and to accelerate the growth of new reefs to protect coastal areas and ecosystems using available renewable energy sources. This paper highlights the new approaches and their various advantages and limitations in tidal and wave energy. The paper also suggests improvements to some of those systems using the recent developments in soft robotics, especially the use of biomimetic fish as a feasible support platform for the monitoring and maintenance of the power generation and potential restoration systems.

This study designed an effective system for monitoring stress levels based on Electrodermal Activity (EDA) sensors by knowing the signal patterns and characteristics using convex optimization decomposition. The EDA sensor considered accurate and sensitive for identifying stress by analyzing the skin conductivity (SC) due to the changes in sympathetic nerve activity. However, the SC signal consists of phasic and tonic components, which needed to decompose to analyze stress levels. The SC signals also followed by the white Gaussian noise, which represents the error value. Hence, deconvolution is a crucial stage for the further process because the quality of the measurement depends on this result. This study aims to deconvolve the SC signal using the convex optimization method (cvxEDA). This model is physiology inspired by EDA based on Bayesian statistics, convex mathematical optimization, and sparsity. This research conducted with 18 subjects through three sessions of measurement. The given stimuli arise in each session to increase the level of stress. The results showed that this method could separate and identify SC. The Phasic component shows an increase in the stimulus of each session, as seen from the number of peaks. In contrast, there were no significant differences in the tonic component. This study shows that the phasic component is closely related to changes in sudomotor nerve activity (SMNA) and response to a stressor, which could be useful to classify stress levels in the future study. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
