Indonesia's geographical condition, which consists of 70 percent ocean territory, holds the potential for utilizing offshore wind turbines to provide cleaner energy. In this study, economic calculations were conducted for offshore wind turbines to generate green electricity and green hydrogen. The chosen ocean area for this endeavor is around the Papa offshore platform in the Java Sea. This area has experienced an economic decline, making it viable for repurposing as a sub-station for a powerhouse and an electrolyzer plant. Based on meteorological data analysis results, the area around the Papa offshore platform exhibits an average at height of 119 m;the wind speed is 5.5 m/*** prevailing wind direction is East Southeast (ESE), with a frequency of 25.2%. Further analysis of wind farms aimed at generating a capacity of 100.8 MW revealed an optimal potential energy generation of approximately 141,656.9 MWh per year. For scenario 1 (electricity production), the cost is $0.192/kWh. The levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) for scenario 2 (offshore electrolyzer) and scenario 3 (onshore electrolyzer) is $9.44/kg and $10.1/kg, respectively. To assess investment feasibility, a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis was conducted. This analysis yielded a selling price of electricity at $0.0271/kWh for the first scenario. For the second scenario, the selling price of hydrogen was calculated at $17.11/kg, and for the third scenario, it was $16.99/kg. Considering its flexibility and potential response to restrictions, the third scenario was deemed the most suitable for offshore utilization to produce clean energy. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of deep learning methods for the Big Five personality traits prediction using multi-task classification. The purpose of the review is to determine the performance of models developed in previous research to describe research opportunities and challenges in the future. The Big Five model is a framework in psychology that categorizes human personality into five dimensions: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The review begins by analyzing 22 articles from the Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, and Scopus databases by applying screening using the Big Five Personality keywords. Then study the concepts of deep learning for model development such as: input, architecture, method, dataset, and performance to identify the strengths and limitations of each approach. The review results of the highest average accuracy by modality such as unimodal text with essay dataset (80.98%), unimodal image with ImageNet dataset (95.36%), unimodal audio with SSPNet dataset (79.48%), bimodal image and audio with Chalearn Video First Impression dataset (91.67%), multimodal text, image, and audio with Chalearn Video First Impression dataset (91.88%). The average accuracy of the Big Five Personality traits was highest (95.36%) and lowest (59%). This highlights the need for standard benchmarks, interpretable models and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve the accuracy, reliability and ethical implications of personality prediction. Future research is expected to pave the way for advancements in understanding human personality through deep learning approaches using other modalities such as EEG, GSR, and PPG. © 2024 IEEE.

Dielectrophoresis-based biochips with various microelectrode configurations have been extensively studied within the last five deca des. However, wide-field application is still challenging. This study aims to fabricate an oblique-configuration microelectrode and then utilizes it to determine the dielectrophoretic (DEP) characteristics of Lactobacillus casei based on the generated non-uniform electric field. The electric field distribution on microelectrodes was simulated with Quickfield 6.6 student version. The microelectrodes were fabricated using a copper film on a glass substrate. The DEP characteristic of Lactobacillus casei was investigated by applying a sinusoidal AC signal to microelectrodes in medium solution with an electrical conductivity of 0.05 S/m. The electric-field simulations show that the strongest electric-field was generated on the tip of electrodes spacing, and the weakest electric-field was generated on the inner of electrodes spacing. The negative-DEP force on Lactobacillus casei was observed at the frequency of 60-130 kHz, while the positive-DEP force was observed at the frequency of 380-700 kHz, both at voltage of 2-6 Vpp. The nDEP force led Lactobacillus casei to be pushed toward the weak electric field on the inner of electrodes spacing, and the pDEP force induced Lactobacillus casei to be attracted toward the strong electric-field on the tip of electrodes spacing. This study implies that the proposed oblique-microelectrode platform has promising application for bioparticles separation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

One-Way Quantum Repeater with Rare-Earth-Ions Doped in Solids

Quantum repeaters are proposed to overcome exponential photon loss over distance in fibers. One-way quantum repeaters eliminate the need for two-way classical communications, which can potentially outperform quantum memory based quantum repeaters. I propose that rare-earth-ions doped in solids and coupled with nano-cavity can be used to generate photonic cluster state efficiently, which serve as good platforms for one-way quantum repeater nodes. In addition, I propose a multiplexed scheme of photonic tree cluster state generation with multiple quantum emitters. With less than 100 quantum emitters, secret key rates can reach the order of MHz over a few thousand kilometers. This proposal is especially useful for generating large scale photonic cluster state, which is essential for correcting operational errors during processing in quantum repeater nodes. © 2024, CC BY.

BACKGROUND: Membrane technology makes it more suitable for the treatment of environmental polluted organic wastewater. Membrane fouling is one of the major concerns in commercial membranes. To overcome this issue, photocatalytic nanomaterials are embedded into the membrane to enhance its surface nature and reusability. In this investigation, polydopamine functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-RGO), graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and PDA-RGO/g-C3N4 nanomaterials were incorporated within polyethersulfone membrane fabricated via a phase inversion technique. These as-prepared membranes’ functional groups and surface morphologies were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission electron microscopy (FESEM). These as-prepared membranes were investigated for photocatalytic activity under visible-light-driven photodegradation by environmental pollutants such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and Norfloxacin (NOR). RESULTS: Compared with pristine PES membrane, the PDA-RGO/g-C3N4-PES nanocomposite membrane showed higher photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B 94.6% and Norfloxacin 96.8%, also reached greater water flux 189 L m−2 h−1. Therefore, the bio-inspired nanocomposite-modified PDA-RGO/g-C3N4 photocatalytic membrane could have huge potential in processing environmentally polluted water. CONCLUSIONS: PDA-RGO/g-C3N4-PES nanocomposite membrane improved the membrane hydrophilicity, water flow, anti-fouling performance, rejection studies and photocatalytic degradation than the pristine membrane. The synergistic result of PDA-RGO and g-C3N4 exhibits better photodegradation efficiency of the membrane towards environmental pollutants. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Deterministic Quantum Repeater with Single Atoms in Cavities

Efficient quantum repeaters are needed to combat photon losses in fibers in future quantum networks. Single atom coupled with photonic cavity offer a great platform for photon-atom gate. Here I propose a quantum repeater scheme with deterministic entanglement generation and entanglement swapping based on photon-atom gates. It can be implemented with various types of atomic systems and require much less experimental complexity compared with other repeater protocols. With current available experimental techniques and reasonable improvements, high entanglement distribution rates can be achieved. A multiplexing configuration of 5-10 single atoms in cavities, secret key rates in order of 100s Hz to kHz can be achieved for communication distance of 1000km, and a few Hz to 10s Hz can be achieved for communication distance of 10000km with longer atomic coherence time and lower photon-atom gate error rate. This proposal paves the way to demonstrate efficient entanglement distribution with quantum repeaters in near future. © 2024, CC BY.

In indoor vertical farming systems, managing dynamic and complex environments poses significant challenges. Traditional control strategies often fall short in adapting to rapid changes in critical parameters such as nutrient levels, climate conditions, and plant health indicators. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel approach for optimizing indoor vertical farming using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), a reinforcement learning algorithm well-suited for environments with continuous action spaces. Our study focused on the control and monitoring of key parameters, including nutrient levels (pH and EC), climate conditions (temperature, humidity, light, and CO2 levels), and plant health indicators (biomass accumulation and leaf size structure). By defining a comprehensive state and action space, we simulated an indoor farming environment and trained the DDPG model to maximize crop yield and health.

The process for producing intelligence is traditionally represented by a series of steps forming a cycle. Collection is one of these stages and is characterized by the application of a set of disciplines to obtain information that will be analyzed for the production of an intelligence product. These disciplines are characterized according to the type of source, its methods and techniques. Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) is the collection discipline focused on publicly available information. Open-source collection methods are usually represented by working diagrams that draw a flow according to the type of information. This paper makes a comparative study of the intelligence cycles of some relevant actors in the international OSINT scene, locates open-source collection in the intelligence cycle, and presents a workflow that combines this cycle with the techniques that form a method for OSINT. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In solids, the condensation of electron and hole pairs with finite momentum leads to an ordered state known as a charge density wave, in which the charge has spatial modulation. However, lattice symmetry breaking and the accompanying relocation of the ions, which changes the charge distribution, can also occur simultaneously, making it difficult to disentangle the origin of the transition. Here we demonstrate a condensed phase in low-dimensional HfTe2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal a metal–insulator transition upon lowering the temperature. The observation of an opening gap, the renormalization of the bands and the emergence of replica bands in the low-temperature regime suggests that a charge density wave formed in the ground state. Raman spectroscopy shows no sign of lattice distortion within the detection limit. A small amount of electron doping substantially raises the transition temperature due to a reduced screening effect and a more balanced carrier density for electrons and holes. Our results indicate that the formation mechanism of the charge density wave is consistent with the excitonic insulator phase in low-dimensional HfTe2 without any structural modification. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2024.

Coupling of mechanical deformation and electromagnetic fields in biological cells

The cell, as the most fundamental unit of life, is a microcosm of biology in which the confluence of nearly all aspects of classical physics (mechanics, statistical physics, condensed matter, and electromagnetism) plays out. This leads to a rich and complex emergent behavior that determines the entire gamut of biological functions. Specifically, at the cellular scale, mechanical forces and deformations are inextricably linked to electrical fields (and, to a lesser degree, magnetic fields). This in turn is responsible for phenomenology such as cell-cell communication, morphological evolution, cell fusion, self-assembly, cell fission, magnetoreception, endocytosis, and adhesion, among others. From the viewpoint of biomedicine, cellular response to the combined influence of electrical, magnetic, and mechanical fields has applications in cancer treatment, targeted transfer of medicine, gene therapy, and wound amelioration. As an example of the profound influence of the combined electrical-mechanical coupling, one needs to take cognizance only of the operation of ion channels that form the basis for our sensing system (such as hearing, sight, and tactile sense). The coupled mechanical and electromagnetic behavior of a cell is a highly interdisciplinary endeavor and this review provides a distillation of both the theoretical underpinnings of the subject and the pertinent biological interpretation. The key developments pertaining to this topic are reviewed, a unified mathematical framework that couples nonlinear deformation and electromagnetic behavior as germane for soft biological entities is summarized, gaps in current knowledge are pointed out, and the central issues that are pertinent to future research are commented upon.
