The management of prostate cancer, a prevalent source of mortality in men, calls for meticulous delineation of the prostate in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images for effective treatment planning. This paper introduces a hybrid artificial intelligence approach for prostate delineation, leveraging prior information from experts, a machine learning model, and a quantum-inspired evolutionary network to augment the accuracy of prostate segmentation. The approach incorporates three novel elements: 1) limited prior information from expert and adaptive polygon tracking (APT) module for initial segmentation;2) a novel historical storage-based quantum-inspired evolutionary network (HQIE) mechanism to search for the optimal neural network and enhancing solution diversity and capacity to address unimodal and multimodal challenges, and 3) a unique mathematical formulation denoted by parameters of the neural network is used to achieve smooth prostate periphery. The method was evaluated across various noise conditions and against several state-of-the-art methods using a multi-center dataset. In addition, an ablation study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of each component. The results demonstrated the superior performance of the hybrid AI method (Dice index: 96.4 ± 2.4%) against state-of-the-art deep learning methods (e.g., UTNet, Dice index: 90.1 ± 5.7%). The hybrid method also showed higher robustness to image noise than traditional methods. This study suggests new insights and technical approaches in the field of prostate segmentation using hybrid artificial intelligence methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Full-marathon and Half-marathon distances are categorized as road running. Full-marathon running is becoming increasingly popular, and Half-marathon is increasing worldwide in both sexes and all age groups. Some aspects might relate to Full-marathon and Half-marathon running performance during training and races. Technology also plays an essential role in supporting runners and running races. Technology like artificial intelligence (AI) now supports the running athlete, not only predicting performance and results. It can also be used later to help the coach generate training programs for the athlete. This research aimed to find many aspects of marathons and performance and analyze them to see if artificial intelligence could later support them. It used secondary data and a systematic literature review proposed by Kitchenham. Out of the 58 articles, 21 of them (36.21%) received a score of 1 from Q1. Additionally, 19 articles (32.76%) received a score of 1 from both Q2 and Q3. Among the 58 articles, 9 (15.52%) received a total score of 3, with all three Q1, Q2, and Q3 scores being 1. This indicates that artificial intelligence will likely support the content of these nine articles. Several factors were also discovered to be connected to marathons and athletic performance. These findings suggested that additional investigation into marathons and performance, later backed by artificial intelligence, remained pertinent and essential. © 2024 IEEE.

The high traffic of containers between countries and continents demands the implementation of automation at cargo seaports. Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (RTGC) is one of the main components for loading and unloading at container yards which needs to move the container accurately to the desired position and minimize the sway during this process. This paper attempts to examine non-linear control using the sliding mode controller (SMC) method for MIMO control problems in RTGC. The control objective is to reduce the swing angle and move the container to the desired position and height by means of the force of two motors on RTGC. The detailed derivation of the nonlinear RTGC model, the design of SMC and its sliding surface are introduced in this paper. In order to optimize the performance of the SMC control action, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Grid search methods are employed in the investigation. The obtained results demonstrate that the SMC exhibits satisfactory control performance and effectively reduces chattering across various initial conditions and system parameters.

Cytometry plays a crucial role in characterizing cell properties, but its restricted optical window (400-850 nm) limits the number of stained fluorophores that can be detected simultaneously and hampers the study and utilization of short-wave infrared (SWIR;900-1700 nm) fluorophores in cells. Here we introduce two SWIR-based methods to address these limitations: SWIR flow cytometry and SWIR image cytometry. We develop a quantification protocol for deducing cellular fluorophore mass. Both systems achieve a limit of detection of ∼0.1 fg cell-1 within a 30 min experimental time frame, using individualized, high-purity (6,5) single-wall carbon nanotubes as a model fluorophore and macrophage-like RAW264.7 as a model cell line. This high-sensitivity feature reveals that low-dose (6,5) serves as an antioxidant, and cell morphology and oxidative stress dose-dependently correlate with (6,5) uptake. Our SWIR cytometry holds immediate applicability for existing SWIR fluorophores and offers a solution to the issue of spectral overlapping in conventional cytometry. © 2024 The Authors. Image-based region mapping requires an image-stitching process to produce a complete map while preserving the details of the mapped objects. Image acquisition can be done using UAVs such as drones, and image stitching can be performed using the Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) techniques. However, this algorithm has a drawback: There are many mismatches during feature matching. In this study, a maximum pixel displacement constraint between images was applied during the feature-matching process. Applying this constraint improved the feature-matching results due to a significant reduction of the mismatch rate from 84.28% to 25.17%. This reduction positively impacted subsequent stages, including map stitching. The mismatch removal process and the acquisition of transformation models during image registration became faster, reducing the processing time from 17m 36.8s to 1m 17.2s. Additionally, there was an improvement in the SSIM metric score, indicating that the stitched image results had a higher similarity to the reference image captured by a digital camera, increasing from 0.8423 to 0.8489. © 2025 Institute of physics Publishing. We propose a novel type of skin effects in non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that we dub a “non-Hermitian Mott skin effect.” This phenomenon is induced by the interplay between strong correlations and the non-Hermitian point-gap topology. The Mott skin effect induces extreme sensitivity to the boundary conditions only in the spin degree of freedom (i.e., the charge distribution is not sensitive to boundary conditions), which is in sharp contrast to the ordinary non-Hermitian skin effect in noninteracting systems. Concretely, we elucidate that a bosonic non-Hermitian chain exhibits the Mott skin effect in the strongly correlated regime by closely examining an effective Hamiltonian. The emergence of the Mott skin effect is also supported by numerical diagonalization of the bosonic chain. The difference between the ordinary non-Hermitian skin effect and the Mott skin effect is also reflected in the time evolution of physical quantities; under the time evolution spin accumulation is observed while the charge distribution remains spatially uniform.

Managing the traffic system is a multifaceted challenge, imposing various solutions to prevent congestion. Traffic management aims to create an efficient control system with numerous advantages, including reduced fuel emissions, lower stress levels, and enhanced driving discipline. Max Pressure stands as one of the techniques for traffic control, designed to adapt and enhance network throughput by considering pressure, defined as the difference between upstream and downstream queue lengths. Recent developments have yielded improved performance in Max Pressure through learning. In this adaptive control mechanism, the concept of Max Pressure is integrated as a reward function within reinforcement learning. This study introduces the "Max Pressure learning"concept, revealing its potential for creating adaptable traffic controllers. By modifying the pressure equation and transforming it into a performance metric, the original Max Pressure concept effectively responds to diverse traffic conditions. This paper showcases research findings demonstrating the surprising effectiveness of pressure as a control mechanism in the context of the learning process. Ultimately, using pressure enables controllers to efficiently alleviate gridlock situations in traffic, highlighting its promising role in optimizing traffic management and enhancing overall traffic system performance. © 2023 IEEE.

In medical imaging, harmonization plays a crucial role in reducing variability arising from diverse imaging devices and protocols. Patient images obtained under different computed tomography (CT) scan conditions may show varying performance when analyzed using an artificial intelligence model or quantitative assessment. This necessitates the need for harmonization. Virtual imaging trial (VIT) through digital simulation can be used to develop and assess the effectiveness of harmonization models to minimize data variability. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of a VIT platform for harmonization across a range of lung imaging scenarios. To ensure consistent and reliable analysis across different virtual imaging datasets, we conducted a multi-objective assessment encompassing three typical task-based scenarios: lung structure segmentation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) quantification, and lung nodule quantification. A physics-informed deep neural network was applied as the unified harmonization model for all three tasks. Evaluation results before and after harmonization reveal three findings: 1) modestly improved Dice scores and reduced Hausdorff Distances at 95th Percentile in lung structure segmentation;2) decreased variation in biomarkers and radiomics features in COPD quantification;and 3) increased number of radiomics features with high intraclass correlation coefficient in lung nodule quantification. The results demonstrate the significant potential of harmonization across various task-based scenarios and provide a benchmark for the design of efficient harmonizers. © 2025 SPIE.

Simulation is a valuable tool for designing and evaluating the performance of x-ray imaging systems. In previous work,1, 2 a hybrid computed tomography(CT) and x-ray diffraction(XRD) imaging system was developed for improved identification of threat objects in checked baggage. Through large-scale simulations of this hybrid CT+XRD system, we can investigate the impact of various parameters on system performance. These parameters include multi-energy acquisitions, varying energy resolution, and additional system views. We will report on our findings and evaluate the system performance resulting from these variations of the simulated system as well as discuss how these findings may influence future system design. © 2023 SPIE.

The outstanding thermoelectric performance of GeTe has attracted significant attention in the research community in recent years. However, many of the underlying physical mechanisms that contribute to GeTe's exceptionally high figure of merit (zT) remain not fully understood. In this study, an Sb-Bi codoped GeTe single crystal (Ge0.86Sb0.08Bi0.06)Te with an ultrahigh zT of 2.7 at 700 K and a record high device zT of 1.41 in the temperature range of 300-773 K was synthesized and investigated. The ultrahigh zT is attributed to the extremely low lattice thermal conductivity induced by strong electron-phonon (EP) interactions as revealed by the experimentally observed Kohn anomaly, through inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. First-principles calculations further demonstrate that the remarkable EP interaction arises from the Fermi surface nesting featured in a one-dimensional (double-walled) topology. Our finding unravels the ultrahigh-zT mechanism in GeTe-based materials, serving as an inspiring guide toward high thermoelectric performance. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
