Polyvinyl Chloride plastic waste is becoming an increasingly urgent global environmental issue. Combustion PVC plastic waste can have significant negative impacts on human health. To overcome these problems, this research was conducted by utilizing zeolite as an adsorbent for PVC combustion smokes. The research methodology is zeolite activation, adsorber design and gas adsorption process through dry adsorption method which is the core of this research. This study will evaluate oxygen concentration and soot emissions. Before being given a zeolite adsorbent, the oxygen concentration produced in PVC combustion smokes was only 17.2% with high soot levels as evidenced by the blackened smoke color. Furthermore, after being given an adsorbent in the form of activated zeolite as much as 283.5 grams, the oxygen concentration produced increased significantly to 20.9% followed by a decrease in soot emission levels as evidenced by changes in the color of whitened smoke. Based on the test results related to the increase in oxygen concentration and the decrease in soot emission levels, it can be concluded that activated zeolite has a high effectiveness in carrying out the PVC combustion smoke adsorption process by producing particles of carbon and oxygen within the normal threshold in the air. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Rotational decoherence dynamics in ultracold molecules induced by a tunable spin environment: The Central Rotor Model

We show that quantum rotational wavepacket dynamics in molecules can be described by a new system-environment model, which consists of a rotational subsystem coupled to a magnetically tunable spin bath formed by the nuclear spins within the molecule. The central rotor model shares similarities with the paradigmatic central spin model, but features much richer rotational dynamics that is sensitive to the molecule’s environment, which can be initiated and probed with short laser pulses used to control molecular orientation and alignment. We present numerical simulations of the nuclear-spin-bath-induced rotational decoherence dynamics of KRb molecules, which exhibit remarkable sensitivity to an external magnetic field. Our results show that ultracold molecular gases provide a natural platform for the experimental realization of the CRM. © 2025, CC BY.

Solar radiation is a varied source of energy, and the mismatch between the availability of these sources and domestic energy demand is a major challenge that must be faced. Energy storage system can be considered as effective solution to overcome the challenge in solar energy utilization. In this work, a thermal box was prepared as energy storage testing apparatus by using a 5W lamp as the heat source located at the center of the box. In the middle of thermal box, the sample of phase change material (PCM) was placed and monitored in order to find out the charging and discharging characteristics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the charging and discharging performance of NaCl–KCl eutectic salt at various ratios. The specific heat capacity and density of all PCM samples were also tested during this investigation. The changes in temperature were observed through type-k thermocouple sensors equipped with data logger. In general, it can be concluded that reducing KCl portion in PCM slightly decreases the specific heat capacity. Experiment results showed that PCM-1 (eutectic salt with 30 wt% NaCl–70 wt% KCl) has the highest specific heat capacity, i.e., 6.93 J/g˚C. The highest rate of charging and discharging was exhibited by PCM-1, highlighting a positive effect of KCl content in eutectic salt. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Equipping buildings with energy harvesting windows is a practical way to reduce greenhouse gas (GhG) emission. Utilizing semi-transparent organic photovoltaics (ST-OPVs) for this application requires the device to be colorfast, allowing for no change in the aesthetics or light harvesting property of the window. Here, we demonstrate an ST-OPV that is colorfast under 1 Sun AM 1.5G illumination at 50 °C and relative humidity of 34 %. © 2023 SPIE.

Trade between islands and countries is increasing in the current era of globalization which also increases the traffic of goods at ports. Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (RTGC) is an important component in the seaports distribution chain, which act as a loading and unloading machine at the container yard. However, heavy trade traffic will likely cause fatigue and negligence if the RTGC is operated manually. Therefore, it is necessary to automate RTGC by applying optimal control. The paper introduces an alternative approach to designing an optimal PID controller built from the LQR method combined with a prescribed degree of stability for achieving the required transient and steady-state responses of RTGC in the port. Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm optimization (PSO), and Simulated Annealing (SA) are applied to select the suitable stability degree value and weighting matrices in the LQR cost function. Simulation results indicate that GA can provide the optimal PID controller to follow the reference trajectory and minimize the swing angle better than PSO and SA. © 2022 IEEE.

Baby walkers are commonly used to support infants in developing motor skills and walking abilities, yet their uncontrolled movement poses significant safety risks, such as falls and injuries. This study addresses these risks by developing a speed-limiting braking system that prevents baby walkers from exceeding a safe speed limit of 0.3 meters per second, thereby enhancing safety. The system integrates a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller, a speed sensor, and a servo motor-driven braking mechanism. Methodology involved MATLAB simulations to fine-tune controller parameters and physical testing for validation. Results showed the braking mechanism engaged promptly when the speed limit was reached and disengaged when speed decreased, confirming effective regulation without impeding natural infant movements. This study demonstrates a reliable solution to enhance baby walker safety while promoting safe motor development for infants. MATLAB simulations and physical tests confirmed the system's efficiency in real-time speed monitoring and automated braking. The results highlighted rapid response times and seamless braking, providing controlled deceleration without interfering with the infant's natural movements. © 2024 IEEE.

In general, natural lightning flashes can be distinguished based on the charge that they neutralize (positive or negative), and if they reach the ground (Cloud-to-Ground - CG) or remain in the cloud (Intracloud - IC). On average, about 100 to 200 lightning strikes occur worldwide per second. This equates to roughly 8 million lightning strikes per day. Accurate lightning classification is crucial for identifying various types of thunderstorms and assessing their severity. Modern lightning location systems effectively capture a substantial portion of all lightning that occurs on Earth. However, due to the vast amount of data gathered, accurately classifying each lightning pulse poses a significant challenge. In this study, we evaluate the use of Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN) data to develop a lightning classification model based on a Residual Neural Network (ResNet). We develop a new methodology to retrieve lightning electric field waveforms from ENTLN non-uniformly sampled data. Mobile robots are increasingly used to collect valuable in situ samples during scientific expeditions. However, many phenomena of scientific interest—deep-sea hydrothermal plumes, algal blooms, warm-core eddies, and lava flows—are spatiotemporal distributions that evolve on spatial and temporal scales that complicate sample collection. Here, we consider the problem of charting the space-time dynamics of deep-sea hydrothermal plumes with the state-of-the-art autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry. In the hydrothermal plume charting problem, the plume state is driven by complicated and unobserved dynamics in the deep sea. To effectively sample the moving plume, an autonomy system must infer plume dynamics from sparse, point observations, while respecting operational constraints of AUV Sentry that restrict the set of possible trajectories to nonadaptive, uniform-coverage patterns. We frame the plume charting problem as a sequential decision-making problem and formulate a mission planner PHORTEX (PHysically-informed Operational Robotic Trajectories for Expeditions) that strategically designs full mission trajectories for Sentry, where each mission plan is informed by the observations of the last. PHORTEX is composed of a trajectory optimizer, which maximizes expected samples collected within a moving plume, and PHUMES (PHysically-informed Uncertainty Models for Environment Spatiotemporality), a modeling framework that leverages an embedded simulator of idealized plume physics as an inductive bias to enable dynamics learning from extreme partial observations and a few Sentry deployments. In both simulation and in field trials at a hydrothermal site in the Gulf of California, we demonstrate that Sentry using PHORTEX learns to track a moving hydrothermal plume and gather samples that significantly improve upon baseline spatial and temporal diversity for use in downstream science tasks.
