Computational modelling and simulation to mitigate the risk of daylight exposure in tropical museum buildings

In museum design and operation,daylight is typically discouraged due to high risk of damaging the display ***,past studies in high-latitude regions have shown the possibility to apply daylight in museums,so long as it is carefully planned,and the display objects are not from the category of high responsive *** the tropical region,the influence of daylighting on light exposure on museum objects is still *** study therefore aims to assess and mitigate the impact of annual daylight exposure on objects with low responsive materials in a tropical daylit museum *** daylight modelling and simulation are performed to achieve the objective,followed with Morris sensitivity analysis and Mahalanobis distance classifier to optimise the *** is found that either WWR or glazing transmissivity gives the greatest influence on the performance *** on the proposed optimisation algorithm,it is possible to determine the optimum solutions satisfying the performance indicators target,for a certain opening ***,the contribution of this study is the proposed computational modelling and simulation methods to mitigate the exposure risk while optimising daylight as a renewable energy source.

Software project outcomes heavily depend on natural language requirements,often causing diverse interpretations and issues like ambiguities and incomplete or faulty *** are exploring machine learning to predict software bugs,but a more precise and general approach is *** bug prediction is crucial for software evolution and user training,prompting an investigation into deep and ensemble learning ***,these studies are not generalized and efficient when extended to other ***,this paper proposed a hybrid approach combining multiple techniques to explore their effectiveness on bug identification *** methods involved feature selection,which is used to reduce the dimensionality and redundancy of features and select only the relevant ones;transfer learning is used to train and test the model on different datasets to analyze how much of the learning is passed to other datasets,and ensemble method is utilized to explore the increase in performance upon combining multiple classifiers in a *** National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)and four Promise datasets are used in the study,showing an increase in the model’s performance by providing better Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve(AUC-ROC)values when different classifiers were *** reveals that using an amalgam of techniques such as those used in this study,feature selection,transfer learning,and ensemble methods prove helpful in optimizing the software bug prediction models and providing high-performing,useful end mode.

DeepSeeColor: Realtime Adaptive Color Correction for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles via Deep Learning Methods

Successful applications of complex vision-based behaviours underwater have lagged behind progress in terrestrial and aerial domains. This is largely due to the degraded image quality resulting from the physical phenomena involved in underwater image formation. Spectrally-selective light attenuation drains some colors from underwater images while backscattering adds others, making it challenging to perform vision-based tasks underwater. State-of-the-art methods for underwater color correction optimize the parameters of image formation models to restore the full spectrum of color to underwater imagery. However, these methods have high computational complexity that is unfavourable for realtime use by autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), as a result of having been primarily designed for offline color correction. Here, we present DeepSeeColor, a novel algorithm that combines a state-of-the-art underwater image formation model with the computational efficiency of deep learning frameworks. In our experiments, we show that DeepSeeColor offers comparable performance to the popular "Sea-Thru" algorithm [1] while being able to rapidly process images at up to 60Hz, thus making it suitable for use onboard AUVs as a preprocessing step to enable more robust vision-based behaviours. Vibrational entropies of oxygen vacancy formation in metal oxides

Oxygen vacancies play a key role in many energy-related applications, and the investigation of the thermodynamic forces driving their formation across different materials can be tackled through the use of ab initio methods. In this context, however, computational studies targeting finite-temperature properties such as entropy remain scarce. Wider-ranging studies are of interest to deepen the understanding of the role of the entropy of oxygen vacancy formation and its different components in processes like the ones involved in solar thermochemical hydrogen (STCH) production, and to investigate the existence of common trends and differences between materials. In this work, we use density functional theory and harmonic phonon calculations to compute the vibrational entropy of oxygen vacancy formation (ΔSvib) for 10 different metal oxide compounds. The computation is carried out by taking the difference between the vibrational entropy of a vacancy-containing and a pristine structure, while the entropic contribution from the final gaseous state of the oxygen lost from the material is accounted for separately with a gas entropy term. We first examine the temperature dependence of ΔSvib and highlight the presence of an initial peak around room temperature, followed by a steady decrease resulting from the presence of an additional O atom (the one becoming vacant) in the defect-free structure. We then inspect the atomic contributions to ΔSvib, and highlight similarities and differences between compounds. Finally, we consider other significant sources of entropy, and find ΔSvib to provide a smaller, yet non-negligible, contribution to the total entropy of vacancy formation. We also compare the temperature dependence of ΔSvib to that of the gas entropy, and show that the two largely counterbalance each other at high temperatures.

To enhance the accuracy of vehicle localization, this research proposes a map matching system with a distinct architecture involving four key stages. Each GPS point creates a local map, and the system detects reference points within that map, subsequently calculating Euclidean distances and determining observation and transmission probabilities. The matching results yield the actual position of the vehicle on the map. The localization algorithm incorporates distance computation using a sliding window technique, observation probability based on proximity between GPS and reference points, and transmission probability to minimize errors. The study employs real-world tests in Bandung, Indonesia, demonstrating successful correction of GPS positions using the proposed method. In conclusion, this research provides a significant contribution in enhancing the accuracy of autonomous vehicle localization. By employing a probabilistic approach to observation and transmission, the method effectively corrects the vehicle's position, compensating for potential inaccuracies introduced by GPS. The utilization of a local map also proves impactful by including reference point positions, resulting in more precise outcomes. From the conducted field tests, all GPS points are accurately detected in their actual positions where there are seven GPS points do not match to vehicle trajectory, after the matching process, all point positions are successfully corrected, ensuring accurate localization by the system.

In recent years, two-dimensional materials have emerged as a hot research area for semiconductor development and related technologies, paving the way for new directions and possibilities. Among these materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are particularly promising candidates for integrated circuits due to their highly suitable band gap sizes, especially in the context of field-effect transistors (FETs). In the realm of TMDs, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) have become potential channel materials. However, challenges such as damage, crystallization defects, and imaging issues during the preparation of 2D materials can lead to issues like poor conductivity, inadequate luminescence, instability, and leakage currents. To tackle these challenges, this study focuses on monolayer MoS2 among 2D materials, employing femtosecond laser pulse annealing to rapidly anneal crystals that are defective or damaged. This technique aims to optimize the crystal structure by addressing any defects that may arise during the growth process. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy serve as detection systems in this research, used to examine the changes in 2D materials before and after annealing, providing valuable insights into their quality and structural integrity. This novel femtosecond pulse annealing technique greatly aids in the fabrication of 3D integrated circuits, as many materials used in 3D IC are two-dimensional. By replacing traditional thermal annealing techniques with femtosecond laser pulse annealing, this method not only eliminates the thermal effects and time-consuming nature associated with conventional annealing, but also harnesses concentrated pulsed laser to achieve rapid thermal processing. This approach effectively suppresses surface defects and enhances characteristics such as conductivity, luminescence, and stability, making it a powerful advancement in next-generation semiconductor technology. © 2025 SPIE.

Designs of the optical structures that support topologically nontrivial states typically rely on the combining of simple single-mode meta-atoms in a lattice with a symmetry that guarantees the occurrence of the topological states. Here, we explore an alternative approach that does not require the use of complex lattice geometries, but instead relies on the tailoring of the spatial distribution of the near fields in the individual meta-atoms operating in the multi-mode regime. To this end we consider specially designed subwavelength grating dielectric waveguides with two quasi-degenerate modes that interfere in the near-field zone leading to highly asymmetric field patterns of the propagating waves. We show that a one-dimensional array of such waveguides exhibits non-trivial topological properties and supports topological edge states even with one waveguide in the unit cell. Theoretical predictions are confirmed experimentally by visualizing the excited states of the array by measuring the intensity of the radiation at the frequency of the third harmonic. © 2024 IEEE.

Tungsten(W)is the leading plasma-facing candidate material for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and next-generation fusion *** impact of synergistic helium(He),irradiation-induced microstructural changes,and the corresponding thermal-mechanical property degradation of W are critically important but are not well understood *** the performance of W in fusion environments requires understanding the fundamentals of He-defect interactions and the resultant He bubble nucleation and growth in *** this study,He retention in helium-ion-implanted W was assessed using neutron depth profiling(NDP),laser ablation mass spectrometry(LAMS),and thermal desorption spectroscopy(TDS)following 10 keV room-temperature He implantation at various *** three experimental techniques enabled the determination of the He depth profile and retention in He-implanted W.A cluster dynamics model based on the diffusion-reaction rate theory was applied to interpret the experimental *** model successfully predicted the He spatial depth-dependent profile in He-implanted W,which was in good agreement with the LAMS *** model also successfully captured the major features of the He desorption spectra observed in the THDS *** NDP quantified total He concentration values for the samples;they were similar to those estimated by ***,the depth profiles from NDP and LAMS were not comparable due to several *** combination of modeling and experimentation enabled the identification of possible trapping sites for He in W and the evolution of He-defect clusters during the TDS thermal annealing process.

Capacitance-to-voltage conversion is essential for capacitive sensors in various industries, including touch interfaces, medical devices, and moisture measurement. However, circuit design faces challenges like non-linearity, noise, and small capacitance variations affecting voltage signals. This article proposes a phase-locked loop in free-running oscillator mode with a frequency-to-voltage converter to enhance accuracy and stability. Test results show a 97.9% measurement accuracy, demonstrating reduced noise and improved stability. The proposed circuit is ideal for high-precision applications in diverse environments, overcoming limitations of traditional methods.

We have designed a novel electronic readout with 24:1 multiplexing ratio of the timing channels that achieves 100 ps coincidence time resolution. The detector layer units comprise 2×4 arrays of 3×3×10 mm3 "LGSO"crystals side-coupled to 6×4 arrays of 3×3 mm2 SiPMs. To achieve low power dissipation and scalability of this readout design, its effective area is implemented in only 13.3 mm using compact and power efficient electronic components. The measured CTR of the 24:1 multiplexed timing channels (or 8:1 LVDS signals) was 107.0 ± 3.6 ps FWHM using a22Na point-source and a very low timing jitter FPGA-based TDC. © 2022 IEEE.
