Several coffee producers rely on manual inspection for quality control, which is prone to inconsistencies and time consumption. Recent studies have proposed Comparison performance on State-of-The-Art (SOTA). Deep learning models were investigated as part of the proposed intelligent computer vision for faster and more reliable coffee bean grading. Performance Deep learning models, i.e., MobileNetV3Small, ResNet50, EfficientNetV2L, and DenseNet201, were evaluated to grade the quality of coffee beans that followed a grading procedure based on Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 01-2907-2008. A specific tray was designed to position coffee beans evenly without overlap for sample preparation, which consist of about 500–600 coffee beans. The process of capturing images is conducted systematically, focusing on each type of coffee bean defect individually. For comparison of SOTA models, five classes of coffee bean defects, With 1053 beans per class, the total dataset comprises 5265 beans. This dataset was divided into 10% for testing and 90% for training. Within the training data, 12% was reserved for validation. The result from this paper shows that MobileNetV3Small achieves the highest accuracy (99.43%) with minimal memory and parameters. Its efficient design allows for robust feature extraction, crucial for distinguishing subtle defect features. While larger models like ResNet50 and EfficientNetV2L also perform well, they exhibit higher memory and parameters.

In electric vehicles, the dynamic nature of driving conditions, speed variations, and fluctuations in loads introduce non-stationary loads on electric motors. These non-uniform load distributions can result in mechanical imbalance faults within the motor, leading to increased vibrations, reduced motor performance, and potential mechanical stress on its components. The development of advanced diagnostic methods is crucial for detecting and addressing these mechanical balance faults in electric motors. This article introduces a novel approach for diagnosing mechanical unbalance faults using local iterative filter decomposition, specifically designed for electric motors operating under non-stationary load conditions. The experimental results demonstrate that the application of iterative filter decomposition yields superior outcomes compared to the absence of decomposition. By employing this method, the algorithm achieves a classification accuracy exceeding 80% for all types of unbalances, including the detection of low-speed rotation unbalance faults, which are known to be challenging to identify.

Exceptional points(EPs)have been extensively explored in mechanical,acoustic,plasmonic,and photonic ***,little is known about the role of EPs in tailoring the dynamic tunability of optical devices.A specific type of EPs known as chiral EPs has recently attracted much attention for controlling the flow of light and for building sensors with better responsivity.A recently demonstrated route to chiral EPs via lithographically defined symmetric Mie scatterers on the rim of resonators has not only provided the much-needed mechanical stability for studying chiral EPs,but also helped reduce losses originating from nanofabrication imperfections,facilitating the in-situ study of chiral EPs and their contribution to the dynamics and tunability of ***,we use asymmetric Mie scatterers to break the rotational symmetry of a microresonator,to demonstrate deterministic thermal tuning across a chiral EP,and to demonstrate EP-mediated chiral optical nonlinear response and efficient electro-optic *** results indicate asymmetric electro-optic modulation with up to 17 dB contrast at GHz and CMOS-compatible voltage *** wafer-scale nano-manufacturing of chiral electro-optic modulators and the chiral EP-tailored tunning may facilitate new micro-resonator functionalities in quantum information processing,electromagnetic wave control,and optical interconnects.

Dimensionality plays a crucial role in long-range dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs). We demonstrate that a resonant nanophotonic structure modifies the apparent dimensionality in an interacting ensemble of emitters, as revealed by population decay dynamics. Our measurements on a dense ensemble of interacting quantum emitters in a resonant nanophotonic structure with long-range DDIs reveal an effective dimensionality reduction to d¯=2.20(12), despite the emitters being distributed in 3D. This contrasts with the homogeneous environment, where the apparent dimension is d¯=3.00. Our work presents a promising avenue to manipulate dimensionality in an ensemble of interacting emitters.

New Energy Levels of Atomic Holmium Discovered by Laser Spectroscopy in the Near Infrared Spectral Range

A combination of optogalvanic spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy with a continuous wave tunable single mode Ti-Sa laser was applied to find new energy levels of atomic holmium. Free and excited holmium atoms were produced in a liquid nitrogen-cooled hollow-cathode lamp. In this study, we examined 35 spectral lines of Ho I in the near-infrared wavelength range from 698 nm to 833 nm. Altogether, 16 new energy levels have been discovered, 5 levels of even parity and 11 levels of odd parity. Another four energy levels have been discovered but have already been published by another research group. Data on the hyperfine structure for the new levels are presented. Additionally, hyperfine structure data of three known levels of even parity were determined for the first *** existence of the new energy levels was confirmed by analyzing 60 lines of previously measured Fourier transform spectra to precisely determine the energy of the levels. © 2024, The Authors. Partial discharge (PD) is a widespread phenomenon instigated in power transformer (PT) insulation systems. PDs are triggered by voids that vary in size and position within the PT insulation. The electrical characteristics of those damaging, PD-causing cavities must be well understood, to accelerate the development of advanced PD detection techniques. Thus, the impact of varying the radius and position of spherical air voids on the characteristics of PDs in PTs is examined using a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) model designed in COMSOL Multiphysics. The spherical voids are positioned between two windings of a 512 kV, three-phase (3φ ) PT. The peak electric field (EF) and aggregate energy in the FEA model are used in conjunction with laboratory measurements of the apparent discharge magnitude, for detailed analysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PET-G)-based cylindrical voids with different heights. Simulations demonstrate that the inception of PD activity in the PT model occurs for spherical voids with a radius exceeding 1 mm. Furthermore, the most severe PDs occur within the press-board insulation, adjacent to the uppermost part of the innermost windings. Experiments demonstrate that a significant increase in PD activity was observed for PET-G-based cylindrical voids with heights exceeding 1 mm. © 2022 IEEE.

Neutron-Gamma Pulse Shape Discrimination for Organic Scintillation Detector using 2D CNN based Image Classification.

This study shows an implementation of neutron-gamma pulse shape discrimination (PSD) using a two-dimensional convolutional neural network. The inputs to the network are snapshots of the unprocessed, digitized signals from a BC501A detector. By exposing a BC501A detector to a Cf-252 source, neutron and gamma signals were collected to create a training dataset. The realistic datasets were created using a data-driven approach for labeling the digitized signals, having classified snapshots of neutron and gamma pulses. Our algorithm was able to successfully differentiate neutrons and gammas with similar accuracy as the CI approach. Additionally, the independent dataset accuracy for our suggested 2D CNN-based PSD approach is 99%. In contrast to the traditional charge integration method, our suggested algorithm with data augmentation, is capable of extracting features from snapshots of the raw data based on the signal structures, making it computationally more efficient and also appropriate for other types of neutron detectors. Gravitational-wave constraints on scalar-tensor gravity from a neutron star and black-hole binary GW200115

In nonminimally coupled theories where a scalar field is coupled to the Ricci scalar, neutron stars (NSs) can have scalar charges through an interaction with matter mediated by gravity. On the other hand, the same theories do not give rise to hairy black hole (BH) solutions. The observations of gravitational waves (GWs) emitted from an inspiralling NS-BH binary system allows a possibility of constraining the NS scalar charge. Moreover, the nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theories generate a breathing scalar mode besides two tensor polarizations. Using the GW200115 data of the coalescence of a BH-NS binary, we place observational constraints on the NS scalar charge as well as the nonminimal coupling strength for a subclass of massless Horndeski theories with a luminal GW propagation. Unlike past related works, we exploit a waveform for a mixture of tensor and scalar polarizations. Taking the breathing mode into account, the scalar charge is more tightly constrained in comparison to the analysis of the tensor GWs alone. In nonminimally coupled theories including Brans-Dicke gravity and spontaneous scalarization scenarios with/without a kinetic screening, we put new bounds on model parameters of each theory. The demand for high-frequency soft magnetic composites with elevated permeability and flexibility is growing for applications in microwave absorbers and magnetodielectric antennas. However, balancing high permeability with mechanical flexibility remains challenging. This study presents flexible Sendust (FeSiAl) composite sheets, fabricated with a hot-pressing technique that aligns flakes within an acrylic rubber and epoxy resin matrix. The alignment significantly enhances relative permeability at high frequencies, achieving single-layer film properties of μr' = 14.8 and μr"= 20.4 at 1 GHz, alongside high saturation magnetization (118 eμg) and high hesitivity (44.7 kΩ m-1), outperforming commonly used materials such as NiZn ferrite. Our method supports customizable thickness without sacrificing permeability, establishing a versatile platform for advanced conformal microwave absorber and antenna applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Thickness Dependent Sensitivity of GAGG:Ce Scintillation detectors for Thermal Neutrons: GEANT4 Simulations and Experimental Measurements

In the present work, we report extensive GEANT4 simulations in order to study the dependence of sensitivity of GAGG:Ce scintillation crystal based detector on thickness of the crystal. All the simulations are made considering a thermalised Am-Be neutron source. The simulations are validated, qualitatively and quantitatively, by comparing the simulated energy spectra and sensitivity values with those obtained from experimental measurements carried out using two different thicknesses of the crystal from our own experiment (0.5mm and 3mm) and validated with three other thicknesses (0.01mm, 0.1 mm and 1 mm) from literature [1]. In this study, we define sensitivity of GAGG:Ce as the ratio of area under 77 keV sum peak to 45 keV peak. The present studies clearly confirm that, while it requires about 0.1 mm thickness for the GAGG:Ce crystal to fully absorb thermal neutrons, it requires about 3 mm to fully absorb the thermal neutron induced events. Further, we propose an equation, that can be used to estimate the thickness of the GAGG:Ce crystal directly from the observed sensitivity of the GAGG:Ce crystal. This equation could be very useful for the neutron imaging community for medical and space applications, as well as for manufactures of cameras meant for nuclear security purposes.
