The location of the Mw 7.5 earthquake on September 28, 2018, was in the Sirenja District of Donggala Regency or about 75 km to the north of Palu City. We present this paper to complete information on disaster data in the northern part, especially for the Sirenja area as an epicenter location. The scope of this research is to present the types of geological hazards, including the area coverage that influenced them. Starting with studying the geological conditions of the Sirenja area, then identifying and mapping the types of hazards that occur. Five types of geological hazards hit the Sirenja area at that time, namely due to surface rupture faults, earthquake shocks, liquefaction effects, tidal flood inundation, and tsunami. Thus, September 28, 2018, is a time that marks the Sirenja area is prone to several geological hazards, and at any time or without knowing when a natural disaster like this will occur again. Based on the results of this study, the local government and the people of Sirenja District are expected to immediately relocate and make a risk reduction strategy or action plan, where the information from this paper can contribute to this.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a semiconductor material with many applications, such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), photocatalysts, water treatment, and photoelectrochemicals. Controlling the properties of anatase TiO2 is typically challenging during TiO2 synthesis. Generally, achieving this control necessitates intricate conditions and processes. The solvothermal method is expected to be easier to control the formation of TiO2 with well-defined morphology and good crystallinity, hence, the band gap can be tuned well. However, there has been a lack of research on the effect of solvents in the solvothermal method of TiO2 synthesis on the optical band gap. Herewith, we report an easy-controlled solvothermal method by varying the type and composition of the solvent to modify the band gap of anatase TiO2. Interestingly, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) analysis reveals an anatase TiO2 optical band gap between 1.66 to 3.60 eV, indicating that TiO2 obtained can be operated in the UV to visible light region. The solvents utilized for the titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) precursor in TiO2 synthesis are isopropanol (IPA), methanol (META), and ethanol (ETA). X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy show anatase TiO2 single crystalline phases synthesized by IPA and ETA solvents and the combination of polycrystalline and amorphous morphology TiO2 synthesized by META solvent. Anatase single crystalline phases are achieved for the solvent mixture with a composition ratio of IPA:ETA solvents of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. Our result shows that the optical band gap of single crystalline phase TiO2 can be engineered in a wide range via solvothermal method for green and sustainable material. © 2024, The Authors. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide, disability, high morbidity, and mortality. One of the leading causes of infarct stroke is carotid stenosis. The postoperative narrowing of the carotid artery diameter is a common complication after primary arterial closure in carotid endarterectomy surgery. A biomaterial design that combines synthetic and natural polymers is a promising strategy for patching arterial closure. In this paper, the electrospinning process was employed and Poly-L Lactic Acid (PLLA) was used as a base material. Chitosan and heparin were added to increase the biocompatibility of the biomaterial. The electrospun PLLA-chitosan immobilized with heparin (C sample) had better characteristics than the pure electrospun PLLA. The fiber diameter decreased to a micrometer scale and the pore size fell and became narrower, resulting in a smoother surface. Fiber diameter results for each sample were 1312.66 nm, 486.29 nm and 387.87 nm. Thereby potentially reducing the activation of blood coagulation and inflammation. The ultimate tensile strength test result for each sample were 2.28 MPa, 3.61 MPa and 3.25 MPa, for elongation results were 12.05%, 17.39%, and 18.14%, aligned with those of the human carotid artery and indicating potential use in patch angioplasty applications. This scaffold nanofiber was declared non-haemolytic for the C sample was 1.13% and non-cytotoxic. Percent viability for each sample was 89.35%, 83.81% and 78.92%. The in vivo host tissue response was shown to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions. This research shows that the proposed PLLA-chitosan-heparin biomaterial has strong physical properties and can modify the inflammatory response. However, it requires additional biofunctional alterations to optimize its tissue engineering capabilities. © 2023 Vietnam National University, Hanoi

We report ultrastrong coupling of the cyclotron resonance of a two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs quantum well to terahertz cavity photons under extreme confinement to the nanometer scale. This was realized by an array of nano-slots fabricated close to the quantum well layer on the GaAs substrate. Our terahertz magnetospectroscopic measurements revealed two polariton branches as a function of applied magnetic field. While the photon-like part of the two polariton branches was clearly observed, the matter-like part was generally elusive. Our electromagnetic simulations quantitatively reproduce our observation for the upper-polariton branch. However, for the lower-polariton branch, our simulations predict a pronounced resonance, which was absent in experimental spectra. This discrepancy may be a consequence of the breakdown of the dipole approximation in this extreme confinement situation.

Nanomechanical resonators made from van der Waals materials (vdW NMRs) provide a new tool for sensing absorbed laser power. The photothermal response of vdW NMRs, quantified from the resonant frequency shifts induced by optical absorption, is enhanced when incorporated in a Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer. Along with the enhancement comes the dependence of the photothermal response on NMR displacement, which lacks investigation. Here, we address the knowledge gap by studying electromotively driven niobium diselenide drumheads fabricated on highly reflective substrates. We use a FP-mediated absorptive heating model to explain the measured variations of the photothermal response. The model predicts a higher magnitude and tuning range of photothermal responses on few-layer and monolayer NbSe2 drumheads, which outperform other clamped vdW drum-type NMRs at a laser wavelength of 532 nm. Further analysis of the model shows that both the magnitude and tuning range of NbSe2 drumheads scale with thickness, establishing a displacement-based framework for building bolometers using FP-mediated vdW NMRs. © 2022, CC BY.

2021 Energy-Climate Hackathon: What: Approximately 40 participants-with expertise spanning energy, computer science, and weather and climate research-joined a week-long Energy-Climate data "hackathon"in a run-up to the 2021 UN COP26 conference. Six projects to promote and grow data and science understanding were initiated and developed by teams over the course of the week, supported by access to state-of-the-art computational resources and stimulated by keynote speakers from industry and academia. The hackathon concluded with teams presenting their output to a panel of invited experts. β−Ga2O3 is an ultrawide band gap semiconductor with emerging applications in power electronics. The introduction of acceptor dopants yields semi-insulating substrates necessary for thin-film devices. In the present work, exposure of Cu-doped β−Ga2O3 to UV light >4 eV is shown to cause large, persistent photo-induced darkening at room temperature. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates that light exposure converts Cu2+ to Cu3+, a rare oxidation state that is responsible for the optical absorption. The photodarkening is accompanied by the appearance of O─H vibrational modes in the infrared spectrum. Hybrid function calculations show that Cu acceptors can favorably complex with hydrogen donors incorporated as interstitial (Hi) or substitutional (HO) defects. When CuGa−HO complexes absorb light, hydrogen is released, contributing to the observed Cu3+ species and O─H modes.

The current study explores computational models developed using the improved Scarf potential and harmonic oscillator to simulate vibrational modes in nonlinear polyatomic systems. These models are derived from the partition functions of the system and are designed to predict molar Gibbs free energy, entropy, enthalpy, and heat capacity. The models are applied to nonlinear polyatomic molecules, including aluminum chloride (AlCl2), boron difluoride (BF2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). For Gibbs free energy and entropy, the equations yield a mean percentage relative error (MPRE) of no more than 0.09% compared to NIST data. Furthermore, using the heat capacity expression, MPRE values of 0.968%, 1.035%, and 2.764% are obtained for AlCl2, BF2, and SO2, respectively.
