Gabor features have been used widely in face identification because of their good results and robustness. However, face identification is strongly affected when the test images are very different from those of the gallery, as is the case in varying face pose. In this paper, a new 2D Gabor-based method is proposed that modifies the grid from which the Gabor features are extracted using a mesh to model face deformations produced by varying pose. Also the Gabor filter kernels are modified by the deformation field computed using the active shape model adjusted to the face. Therefore, the position of the Gabor jets with respect to the face features (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) is closer to the original position in the frontal face and the modified Gabor filter kernel adjusts to the varying pose. Our method incorporates blocks for illumination compensation by a Local Normalization method, and entropy-weighted Gabor features to emphasize those features that yield proper identification. The method was assessed on the FERET database including pose variations for ±60°, ±40°, ±25°, ±15°, and 0°. We compared our results to those previously published for 2D methods. Our proposed method achieved the highest classification accuracy on the FERET database.

A novel hybrid optimization algorithm and its application in solving complex problem

Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is a new heuristic algorithm which has been demonstrated a successful technology and applied to solving complex optimization problems. But the ACO exists the low solving precision and premature convergence problem, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is introduced to improve performance of the ACO algorithm. A novel hybrid optimization (HPSACO) algorithm based on combining collaborative strategy, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization is proposed for the traveling salesman problems in this paper. The HPSACO algorithm makes use of the exploration capability of the PSO algorithm and stochastic capability of the ACO algorithm. The main idea of the HPSACO algorithm uses the rapidity of the PSO algorithm to obtain a series of initializing optimal solutions for dynamically adjusting the initial pheromone distribution of the ACO algorithm. Then the parallel search ability of the he ACO algorithm are used to obtain the optimal solution of solving problem. Finally, various scale TSP are selected to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed HPSACO algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed HPSACO algorithm takes on the better search precision, the faster convergence speed and avoids the stagnation phenomena. © 2015 SERSC.

In this paper, we propose a novel model for high-dimensional data, called the Hybrid Orthogonal Projection and Estimation (HOPE) model, which combines a linear orthogonal projection and a finite mixture model under a unified generative modeling framework. The HOPE model itself can be learned unsupervised from unlabelled data based on the maximum likelihood estimation as well as discriminatively from labelled data. More interestingly, we have shown the proposed HOPE models are closely related to neural networks (NNs) in a sense that each hidden layer can be reformulated as a HOPE model. As a result, the HOPE framework can be used as a novel tool to probe why and how NNs work, more importantly, to learn NNs in either supervised or unsupervised ways. In this work, we have investigated the HOPE framework to learn NNs for several standard tasks, including image recognition on MNIST and speech recognition on TIMIT. Experimental results have shown that the HOPE framework yields significant performance gains over the current state-of-the-art methods in various types of NN learning problems, including unsupervised feature learning, supervised or semi-supervised learning.

In smart grid, privacy implications to individuals and their family is an important issue, due to the fine-grained usage data collection. Wireless communications are considered by many utility companies to obtain information. Network coding is exploited in smart grids, to enhance network performance in terms of throughput, delay, robustness, and energy consumption. However, Network Coding introduces new challenge for privacy preserving due to the encoding of packet in forwarder nodes. We propose a distributed privacy preserving scheme for network coding in smart grid, which considers the converged flows character of smart grid and exploits a homomorphic encryption function to decrease the complex in forwarder node. The message content of packet is encrypted and the tag of packet is encrypted by homomorphic encryption function. Then the forwarder node linear random codes the encrypted message contents and directly processes the tags cryptotext based on the homomorphism feature. It offers message content confidentiality privacy preserving feature, which can efficiently thwart traffic analysis. Extensive security analysis and performance evaluations demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

It is shown by particle-in-cell simulations that a narrow electron beam with high energy and charge density can be generated in a subcritical-density plasma by two consecutive laser pulses. Although the first laser pulse dissipates rapidly, the second pulse can propagate for a long distance in the thin wake channel created by the first pulse and can further accelerate the preaccelerated electrons therein. Given that the second pulse also self-focuses, the resulting electron beam has a narrow waist and high charge and energy densities. Such beams are useful for enhancing the target-back space-charge field in target normal sheath acceleration of ions and bremsstrahlung sources, among others.

In this paper, we focus on the widely-used radix-2 2 Decimation-In-Frequency (DIF) Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. A variable-length, controllable-precision FFT processor is proposed. The processor can perform 16, 64, 256 and 1024 point FFT/IFFT and provide flexible wordlength scaling modes for different FFT stages. Thus, the processor is suitable for different precision and FFT length requirements in various applications. Aiming at high throughput performance, single-path delay feedback (SDF) pipeline architecture is adopted. The design is testified on Xilinx Virtex6 xc6vcx240t FPGA. Accordingly, we make a clear comparison between the proposed design and Xilinx FFT v7.1. Our design achieves better signal-to-quantizationnoise ratio (SQNR) property and shorter pipeline latency. Meanwhile, the occupied resource is approximately the same. Moreover, SQNR performance of different FFT length and wordlength scaling modes is analysed.

In this paper, a fast fixed-point simulation technology is proposed for a multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system. The overall computations in the SAR imaging algorithm is explicitly analysed. FFT operations account for most memory consumption in the imaging flow. Accordingly, a fixed-point FFT algorithm is adopted due to the trade-off between precision and memory occupation of the FPGA implementation. Furthermore, this paper describes an optimized word-length configuration method based on theoretical analysis of architecture of Radix-22 FFT. This methodology is verified in a SystemC development environment due to its superiority of fast and bit-accurate system-level simulation capability. Finally, the proposed SystemC based fixed-point imaging algorithm and the Matlab based floating-point imaging algorithm are both conducted to process point array target raw data. Peak side-lobe ratio (PSLR) and integrated side-lobe ratio (ISLR) is evaluated. Experimental results indicate that profiles in the two cases do not differ greatly, which validates that the proposed fixedpoint algorithm with less resources occupation has comparable accuracy and can meet system requirements.

This paper presents concepts and some experiment on UAV automatic landing on any flat area without prior knowledge of (detachable) markers' positions. The process consists of two key notions. First, the UAV approximates 3D positions of four color markers using a single camera stereoscopic scheme. In other words, the aircraft flies and captures images of ground to create depth map of the four markers. Second, it relies on a pose estimation algorithm (here, Homography) to approximate rotational and, especially, translational information between air to ground. What is novel in this concept is z-coordinate of markers on ground can always be normalized based on our kinematic chain. Thus, homography can be used. Additionally, depth estimation using stereo vision with a camera is shown in experimental result. Furthermore, the whole process is also possible without GPS data, which might post problem in some certain situations, e.g. inadequate positioning accuracy for small landing area, or unreliability during warfare.

The performance of an ad-hoc network is greatly limited by collisions due to hidden terminals. In this paper, we propose a receiver tracking contention (RTC) scheme, which achieves high throughput by allowing the receivers to assist for channel contention. In RTC, link is the basic unit for channel access contention. Specifically, transmitter is used to contend for the channel and receiver is used to announce the potential collision. Based on INT message coding scheme, transmitter and its corresponding receiver can be well coordinated. In such mechanism, hidden terminals are avoided and exposed terminals are encouraged to transmit simultaneously. Based on OFDM modulation, RTC packets several subcarriers as subcontention unit and operates channel contention over multiple subcontention units. Furthermore, each subcontention unit maintains a transmission set, where collision-free links are allowed to merged into the transmission set In this case, the transmission set of subcontention unit can be aggregated after each contention period. When the subcontention unit i is the smallest index of non-empty subcontention unit, the transmission set of unit i will win the channel contention and transmitters of unit i will start to transmit in the following data transmission period. Analysis and simulation results show that RTC achieves a notable throughput gain over Back2f as high as 190% through simulation.

The head-on collision of two ion acoustic solitary waves is investigated in a magnetized plasma containing trapped electrons and dust grains. For completeness, the fluctuations in dust grain charge are taken into account. By using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) perturbation method, an analytical expression is obtained for the phase shift that takes place due to the collision of the waves. How the phase shift behaves under the combined effect of trapped electrons and dust grains along with the finite temperature of ions is examined. A focus is given to uncover the situations of fluctuating charge and fixed charge on the dust grains in the plasma. Interestingly, the solitary waves acquire a larger phase shift and are delayed more in the case of dust grains having a fluctuating charge.
